Ariadne / Ariadni

Got about 9 weeks to go before we meet our little girl and we can't settle on a name.

What are your thoughts on Ariadne (could also be spelt Ariadni but I'm more interested in what you think of the name than the spellings.)

DH is Greek, for context. Surname also Greek. We live in the UK.

Thanks!

I love it, it's on the list for Dd2 but dd1s namr also begins with A and I don't really want matching initials.

I think with all the Arias and Ariannas around at the moment Ariadne will fit in well whilst still being a bit different.
I don't like the I spelling.

Sophronia · 28/01/2019 11:16

I love it. I also like the Spanish version Ariadna.

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 28/01/2019 11:18

I like it. I’d also go with the ‘e’ spelling. It reminds me of the Borrowers Smile

Joinourclub · 28/01/2019 11:33

I think it’s lovely. It was on my list, but ultimately I found it too frilly for my taste.

KiplingAngelCake · 28/01/2019 12:21

I quite like it. I have Greek friends who have recently named their DD Antigone. Another option? Gorgeous name.

SweetheartNeckline · 28/01/2019 12:27

I really like it. The nickname Ari works well as a spoken nickname (I know an Ariadne) but she doesn't use it written down, more informal amongst family and friends like Soph or Em would be. I don't think Ariadne looks very pretty written down but it's a lovely name.

WhitherShallIWander · 28/01/2019 12:27

Ariadne - is the correct way to spell it (according to my dad). Ari is usually short for Aristophanes (boys name) never heard of a Greek female called Ari.

Most of the Antigone’s I know all loath their name....

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 28/01/2019 12:31

It's a beautiful name but it makes me think of spiders, which makes me shudder. Sorry!

BrokeLuce · 28/01/2019 12:36

It's my niece's name, I love it. Definitely spell it Ariadne.

RuthW · 28/01/2019 13:34

Love it

reeny19 · 28/01/2019 16:08

I love it, if you’ve got Greek connections definitely go for it! And spell with an ‘e’.

It’s been my fav girls name for years and I want to use it myself, but undecided....(no Greek connections). DH has given it the ok (he vetoed the other girls name I love) and it’s just down to me and whether I’ve got the guts to go for it.

Also makes me think of spiders!

VoyageInTheDark · 28/01/2019 16:47

I like it. It reminds me of Poirot as there was a character in that called Ariadne Oliver

HeronLanyon · 28/01/2019 17:20

Yes ! Ariadne Oliver author or actress? Mirror cracked or murder At vicarage. Oo feel like listening to some June Whitfield (except I think it was poirot) Christie.

Somerville · 28/01/2019 17:26

Wouldn’t be out of place in a lot of Uk classrooms - there are lots of classica greek inspired names around at the moment. I know babies called Penelope and Calliope.

Ribbonsonabox · 28/01/2019 17:28

It was in our top 3! Gorgeous name. I'd go with Ariadne spelling. I know it seems less intuitive but I think that spelling is the traditional, most well known spelling of it in the UK. I think youd actually end up with more pronunciation problems with the other spelling in the UK.

fanks · 28/01/2019 19:42

I love this name but myOH didn't because of the spider connection!

soundsystem · 28/01/2019 20:42

I love love love it! And also Ari as a nickname (biased as I have an Ari, although she's an Arianwen)

PandaG · 28/01/2019 20:50

Love it. Reminds me of Ariadne Oliver - character in various Agatha Christie novels. Different, but not completely out there. :)

DramaAlpaca · 28/01/2019 22:55

I like it. I prefer the Ariadne spelling.

pineapplebryanbrown · 28/01/2019 23:26

I love it and you're v lucky to have a Greek DH as an excuse to go wild with all the beautiful Greek names.

MumUnderTheMoon · 29/01/2019 20:35

I love the name Ariadne I think it's beautiful. Persephone was on my list when I was pregnant and I also love the names Athena, Selene, Thalia and Nyx.

Ngaio2 · 30/01/2019 22:58

Ariadne is a character in a Classical Greek myth. She was turned into a spider. Google it. Anyway that’s why spiders are called arachnids after Ariadne.

dontknowwhattodo80 · 31/01/2019 07:10

It's my favourite girls name!

PoutySprout · 31/01/2019 07:44

Love it. The “I” version makes it look welshified!

IVflytrap · 31/01/2019 08:06

I love Ariadne, and would definitely spell it with an e, as that's what Brits are most familiar with.

I think most people have heard of it, so you shouldn't have many mispronunciations. Ari is a nice, logical nickname.

That's Arachne you're thinking of. Ariadne is the one with Theseus, the Minotaur and the labyrinth. Nothing to do with spiders.
