So I thought we were agreement on a girls name for the bump - Juliette.

Now DP has just told me he’s not keen on it because he just thinks it would get shortened to Julie.

I’ve told him he needs to come up with some name suggestions for a possible girl but is he right on the Juliette will just be Julie front?

Obviously I can see why he might think that but all the Juliet / Juliette’s ive ever known have never been called Julie

What’s wrong with Julie?

Ribbonsonabox · 26/01/2019 18:57

I think Juliette probably wont get shortened to Julie.... I know a Juliet and no one ever called her Julie. Why would you when the name is not that much shorter? Jules or Ju Ju or something maybe.... but Julie is not really a nickname is it?
I dont think Juliette is a name that would often get shortened. It's only three syllables!

Lipsticktraces · 26/01/2019 18:57

I used to know a Juliette and everyone called her Juliette.

It’s a lovely name.

HouseyMcHouseFace · 26/01/2019 18:58

The only Juliet I know is a Lettie. I think 3 syllable names do tend to get shortened to 2 syllables. If you have a preference as to the nickname or just prefer the longer name just insist on calling her by that. On nursery/ preschool/ reception forms they always ask the name of the child and then what name they are known by.

You can’t control it once they’re older obviously but as a baby/ young child you can mostly control it.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 26/01/2019 18:59

My 8 year old is called Juliette and has never been called Julie in her life. Not even shortened to Jules or anything, only thing I call her apart from it is Monkey!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 26/01/2019 19:02

The only Juliet’s I know are always Juliet. Think Julie very unlikely.

MimiSunshine · 26/01/2019 19:05

@Rogueaccountant he doesn’t like it, can’t say it’s at the top of my list either

I also think Jules, Juju or even Jet are more likely (in that order).

We already have a DD with a long name that isn’t shortened, he says the nursery kids call her a mispronunced version of it to support his Julie point.

My point is that the kids are trying to say her full name but it’s a mouthful and tricky for them. They’re not calling her the equivalent of Cathy if she was called Catherine. Using that example the kids call DD ‘etherine’.

Julie is kind of an old fashioned name so I don't think it would occur to her peers to shorten her name to that. More likely to be Jools as mentioned above. Tbh all names will be adapted in ways you can't anticipate by certain people in their lives (a grandparent, best friend, future partner etc) so it's kind of futile seeking a name that can't be altered.

Juliette is gorgeous.

CakeIsMyFavouriteAndBest · 26/01/2019 19:09

As I said my daughter has never had her name shortened at nursery or school. In fact some of her friends with shorter names end up with them lengthened as there are more than one of them in the class so have their surname mentioned all the time with their first name (like Tony Welch in topsy & tim!)

DannyWallace · 26/01/2019 19:11

I've only ever known one Juliette (we went to school together).
We weren't exactly best friends, but we chatted, were in a lot of the same classes and are still friends on SM.
I never heard anyone call her anything other than Juliette.

AppleKatie · 26/01/2019 19:20

I’ve known/taught 3/4 Juliet’s in my life none of them have ever been called Julie.

Fusioluxe · 26/01/2019 19:23

The only people I know who would shorten Juliette to Julie are my ILs who shorten everything including the name “Pete” (to “P”)

RedDwarves · 26/01/2019 19:34

More likely to get Jules than Julie.

The only Julies I know are Julies.

The Julias and Juliets I know get their full name, or get Jules. So I'd make sure you're happy with Jules and forget the unlikely Julie problem.

MimiSunshine · 26/01/2019 19:44

Thanks all. I’m happy with Jules / Jools, I just don’t see Julie as being the inevitable shortening he does.

Baby may be a boy anyway. If he really doesn’t like Juliette then I wouldn’t force it on him but but it’s on him to come up with something I love more than Juliette or actually any alternative really.

I agree that nobody will shorten to Julie. We know 2 and it's never happened. They do get called Jules though.

LBOCS2 · 26/01/2019 19:50

Ours doesn't get Jules or Julie - she's sometimes called J'et or J but that's it. Mostly everyone uses her full name.

itstrue · 26/01/2019 20:16

My Juliette gets shorted to Jules or Ju Ju. But mostly she's Juliette.

Never Julie.

Highpeak · 26/01/2019 22:21

I also have a little Juliet, she just gets called that or a completely unrelated nickname. The adult one I know is a jules.

Ngaio2 · 26/01/2019 22:33

Same here — ones I’ve known always called Juliet/te.
I think your DH is worrying about nothing.

JacksonPillock · 26/01/2019 23:06

Why does it matter what the kids at school call her? How much time do you spend hanging out with the kids from her school?

ChimpyChops · 26/01/2019 23:20

This is my top choice at the moment. Gorgeous name! Definitely wouldn't think to shorten to Julie.

Bluewidow · 26/01/2019 23:30

It will only get shortened if you don’t pick people up on shortening their name. I taught my daughter to say “ I’m a Victoria not a Vicky.” Hasn’t been needed to be used.

foxtiger · 28/01/2019 20:06

I do know a Juliet who is called Julie by her own request, but she's probably about 50. I don't think I know anyone under 40 called Julie, so I think it's unlikely anyone will think of using it for a little girl!

MikeUniformMike · 29/01/2019 13:49

I don't mind Julie but it's dated. I dislike Jules.
Juliet is ok but I don't like Juliette as it sounds like Julie ate/Ette.

starkid · 29/01/2019 15:18

I wouldn't think to shorten Juliette to Julie. Maybe Jules if you're friends, but not Julie. It's a nice name and I like the spelling too :)
