Was set on Matilda but its getting quite popular.....
What do you think about the name Pippa?
Its a female diminutive of a name of someone where important to me.
Thanks :-)

Just to clarify..... we do not like longer names shortened. My opinion is if you are going to call your child a name then thats the name on their birth certificate. So we would not use Philippa.

I totally agree. I have never in my life wished I had a longer name to choose from.

JacksonPillock · 26/01/2019 23:17

Pippa Peg

ChimpyChops · 26/01/2019 23:18

Absolutely love it!

Japanesejazz · 26/01/2019 23:27

In Greek it means blow job. I know this because of 3 day eventing and the olympics, only time pippa funnel had to use her full name

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 26/01/2019 23:45

Oh I know, just word association. I don't believe children bully children because of names anyway. If you love it you must use it! It really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 26/01/2019 23:46

I love it. It's fine as it is on the birth certificate.

Wallabyone · 26/01/2019 23:54

I was just coming on to add the Greek meaning...

It's pretty enough in English though! I think I prefer Piper as a stand-alone name though.

Lara53 · 27/01/2019 01:02

I teach a Tilda - that’s her name on the birth certificate. Unusual and very pretty

jessstan2 · 27/01/2019 01:34

Philippa, Pippa for short. Like Duch of Cambs sister. Sounds pretty!

swimmerforlife · 27/01/2019 02:01

Peppa is Pippa in kiwi!

Yes but I am assuming the OP does not live in NZ so that's irrelevant besides the point I am a kiwi and I still would not pronounce it as Peppa-

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 02:41

Personally I wouldn't give my daughter a name that meant blowjob in Greek, shag in Swedish, and wank in Italian.

Imagine how you'd advise a French woman who wanted to call her daughter Fanny.

Despite Brexit we live in an international world. Give your child name that travels well. Not one that has people sniggering.

Scandaloso · 27/01/2019 02:43

'It means vagina in Polish'

Keeps on giving!

Astronica · 27/01/2019 04:43

I love Pippa. Great sounds, and agree with the pp who said it's modern and unpretentious.

mummarosie1 · 27/01/2019 05:09

I have a Phillipa/Pippa/Pip. Always gets compliments, and if 'Pippa' bothers her when she's in Europe she can be Philippa or Pip.
Crisis averted Grin

mummarosie1 · 27/01/2019 05:10

*Philippa

Misspelt my own daughters name 😂

Sosie91 · 27/01/2019 06:42

It means blow job in Italian too. We loved Pippa but couldn’t face giving our daughter a name that could possibly lead to teasing especially in a catholic school with a lot of Italians x

GrammerlyH · 27/01/2019 06:42

Lovely name. It always makes me laugh how whenever someone asks a question about the name Pippa, mumsnet erupts with ‘but it means blowjob in Europe.’ I wonder how many of the people who post this actually have first hand knowledge of this, or are they just repeating what they’ve read elsewhere? I have been all over Europe with a group of friends (one called Pippa) and have never once experienced any negativity over the name. It’s a bit like Polish/French/Italian people advising people not to use the name John because it’s slang for the loo in the UK!

Rafabella · 27/01/2019 07:14

It's pretty but I would avoid it due to the various European meanings. An earlier poster suggested Tilda which is beautiful as a stand-alone or as a derivative of Matilda. I prefer Tilda as it transcends from child to adult beautifully.

stellarfox · 27/01/2019 09:17

I love both Pippa and Matilda. I’m not keen on Philippa so would just use Pippa on the birth cert too

tammytoby · 27/01/2019 11:34

They're probably being polite!

GrammerlyH · 27/01/2019 13:26

Ha ha - maybe! But my point was that lots of people just repeat this same old tired comment about the name Pippa meaning shag and wank and blowjob and vagina and whatever else people are saying, without actually experiencing it on the ground. Honestly, across many months in many different European countries and cultures the name didn’t raise a single eye brow. It’s like old people repeating what they read in the Daily Mail :) If the OP likes it, she should use it.

MumMumMum1 · 27/01/2019 14:13

I agree @GrammerlyH the first & only time I’ve heard it is on mumsnet. No one in real life has ever made that comment. Even when I was researching the name nothing came up until I specifically searched for ‘meaning of Pippa in..’ etc. It’s really not a big deal.

heartoftheocean · 27/01/2019 19:07

Thank you MumMumMum1 and GrammerlyH. You've been fabulous! I totally agree, people still use Minnie and that is related to the lady genital area and Percy Which is a well known saying point Percy at the porcelain.
These random comments are not going to put me off the name in the slightest! Thanks everyone.

Well they're comments you actively sought.

Good luck little Pippa.

SemperIdem · 27/01/2019 19:27

Then why did you ask for people’s opinions? Hmm
