Can I Use Minnie?

Me and DH are expecting our first DD in February. We really love the name Minerva shortened to Minnie. However my sister has pointed out that paired with our surname it will sound like her name is Minerva Mouse, or even worse Minnie Mouse! Do we still go for it?

OP posts:

One of my good friends has a Minnie
I love it!

Phebes · 20/01/2019 20:13

Is your surname actually Mouse? If so, absolutely not!!!

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 20:14

I wouldn't.

a) No one wants a comedy name and a name that sound pretty much like Minnie Mouse is a comedy name

b) She might turn out a bit chunky and not at all mini

c) I believe Minnie if a euphemism for fanny in some parts of the UK.

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 20:14

If you're really set on Minerva I think Mimi is a better shortening.

rosyedith · 20/01/2019 20:19

I can't cope with some of the silly comments on here! I like Minnie, it's lovely! Go for it if you like it.

tammytoby · 20/01/2019 20:20

Is your surname Mouse?!Shock

MollyHuaCha · 20/01/2019 20:21

It's ok. But in my opinion Minnie is not a serious name and should be a nn.

tilder · 20/01/2019 20:23

Minnie=fouf round here.

rosyedith · 20/01/2019 20:23

@tammytoby are you 11 years old

FurryDogMother · 20/01/2019 20:24

I love Minerva, but hate Minnie.

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 20:27

rosyedith I believe tammyboy was referring to this from the OP 'my sister has pointed out that paired with our surname it will sound like her name is Minerva Mouse, or even worse Minnie Mouse!'.

If the OP has a surname that sounds like Mouse calling a child Minnie would be ridiculous.

rosyedith · 20/01/2019 20:32

@Jiggins @tammytoby I apologise I didnt read the OP properly! Also the most irritate pregnant woman on earth right now.

Jiggins · 20/01/2019 20:36

Ha! Grin

Rage on, it's your right!

Gobletoffire · 20/01/2019 20:38

I like Minerva, but definitely not Minnie as a standalone name.

zozozoo · 20/01/2019 20:39

I really like it but my dd does use Minnie as the name for her foof

mummyhaschangedhername · 20/01/2019 20:55

If your surname is actually mouse then no, don't do it. Otherwise sure. My husbands granny was Minnie.

Cookit · 21/01/2019 10:47

Well it depends how close your surname actually is to Mouse...

If it’s something like Morse (Inspector), then I think Minnie Morse is pretty bad.

Just keep saying it out loud and you should figure out if it’s ok.

Stormwhale · 21/01/2019 20:31

I love Minerva. What a name.

MissMoodyMoo · 21/01/2019 20:36

I nursed a minnie that was in her 90s!! It was her full name and not a NN! It really suited her! She was a farmer and fierce and sassy but had a soft side too! I love it ❤

Romanmonkey · 21/01/2019 20:41

A lot of children here also use Minnie as the name for their foof. I wouldn’t.

ProbablyNotMyRealName · 21/01/2019 20:44

Sorry but as pp said Minnie is a nickname for your foof.

If it’s anything like Minnie Mouse then no you absolutely can’t. Your child will not thank you.

Mimimouse4 · 21/01/2019 20:52

Our DD is called Minnie. I call her Minnie marmite as people either love it or hate it!

We love it although hate it when people think her name is Millie!!!

RedDwarves · 21/01/2019 20:56

If your surname is even remotely similar to Mouse, then no.

foxbox99 · 21/01/2019 21:14

Minnie is what we called our fandangos when we were kids.

Villainess · 21/01/2019 21:16

'If it’s something like Morse (Inspector), then I think Minnie Morse is pretty bad.'

Grin Grin

I just snorted at the idea of someone being called Minnie Morse! I'd definitely be thinking 'poor sod, what a burden that name is'. And Inspector Morse thought being called Endeavour was bad enough.
