Hallie

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 11/01/2019 22:53

Thea

HappyGoLuckyGo · 11/01/2019 22:57

Thea.

How is Hallie pronounced? Ha-lee, or Hay-lee?

wheneverythinggoestitsup · 11/01/2019 22:58

@HappyGoLuckyGo

Ha-lee

Mm. No, I’ll stick with Thea, although Hallie is pretty.

Due to my own name, I’m averse to anything with the slightest chance it can be mispronounced! Restricts me somewhat 😂

ShadyLady53 · 11/01/2019 23:02

Thea but pronounced correctly- taya as in layer.

ShadyLady53 · 11/01/2019 23:04

Or player - just realised we all pronounce layer differently. If you were pronouncing it Theee-ah, I’d go with Hallie.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 11/01/2019 23:04

Amber would be my choice

emmeline7725 · 11/01/2019 23:05

"Correct" pronunciation is Thea, as in Thee-ah. I have a Thea. Only one person calls her Fear, he's from Manchester.

Sarahandduck18 · 11/01/2019 23:06

Amber

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 11/01/2019 23:06

Oh! Thea is pronounced taya? I thought is was THAY-UH.

In that case none. Sorry.

ShadyLady53 · 11/01/2019 23:09

Globally it’s definitely Taya and that’s the only way I’ve ever heard it pronounced. Like The au lait!

AWishForWingsThatWork · 11/01/2019 23:11

I like Thea

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 11/01/2019 23:11

Ahhh! I get it now! Thank you! Learned something new today! Smile

ShadyLady53 · 11/01/2019 23:17

@MissLanes I only know because I was tired of getting bollocked every time I did a new register or call sheet and said “Thee -a”. I always got a very stern “Tay-a” back with an eye roll.

I thought it would be like Theodore or Dorothea, but my PHD Linguist friend corrected me.

ShadyLady53 · 11/01/2019 23:20

A previous poster calls her daughter Thee-a though so it’s probably been Anglicised and you can get away with any pronunciation! I know a Thalia known as tha-lia rather than Ta-lia. Anything goes now.

Thee-a
Thaya-
Tee-a

YahBasic · 11/01/2019 23:22

Love Hallie, prefer the look of it spelt Halle

MissLanesAmericanCousin · 11/01/2019 23:23

Thanks, ShadyLady53! So, what language or culture is Thea, when it's pronounced Tay-a? Gaelic? Scottish?

ShadyLady53 · 11/01/2019 23:24

I knew an adorable Halle Rose. Absolute pleasure to teach and it made me like the name as it really suited her to a t.

Marv1nGay3 · 11/01/2019 23:25

I love Amber

wheneverythinggoestitsup · 11/01/2019 23:27

Would be pronounced Thee-a after DHs grandmother who is called Dorothea

ShadyLady53 · 11/01/2019 23:28

@MissLanesAmericanCousin German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, most Slavish and Ancient/Classical languages like Latin and Greek...I could go on. I’d think it may be Thee-a in Scots Gaelic but I don’t know for sure...I only guess as I know a Scottish Dorotheeeea.

I worked with German Theo’s and Theodores that were pronounced Tayo and Tayodore. They don’t use the Th sound.
