Does the problem lie with “lily”?

Milasmummy · 29/12/2018 11:32

A colleague of mine recently had a baby and named her “Lilyella” (no hyphen). I can’t help but find this name so...chavvy. But why??? Is “Lily” the issue?

Just out of interest, what’s your thoughts on each name...and do you think they are chavvy or classy?

Lily
Lilly/lillie
Lily-mai/mae/Rae
Lilia
Lillian
Liliana
Lilyelle/lilyella

Interested to see if the issue is lily?

Thanks

No the issue is that’s it’s totally made up and makes her look a bit illiterate
Lily’s a fine name on its own
Lilyella sounds like an STD
Poor kid

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 29/12/2018 11:34

What has your colleagues baby name got to do with you exactly? Unless you’re pregnant and debating naming your baby Lily or similar what does it matter if you consider it “chavvy”? Do you just fancy slagging off a babies name?

oneilove · 29/12/2018 11:38

Someone I know had a baby called Lillie-Ella which I find chavvy.

Any spelling except Lily seems fairly chavvy to me, and I think even the spelling Lily is too overused.

ThatPeskyElf · 29/12/2018 11:39

DD watches ‘DanceMoms’ in which there is a Lilyana, Ellieana and another ___ana that I cant remember.
Colleague has a Katyana and I also have a family friend with a Carrieana.... seems like a bit of a trend to blend names and some how appear unique, but actually they appear the opposite in my opinion!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 29/12/2018 11:42

The problem to me is the two names don't even flow together. There's too many L's.
Lily May, Lily Grace, Lily Rose
Might be over used, but There's no denying they fit beautifully and roll off the tongue.

MonaChopsis · 29/12/2018 11:47

I read it as being like Old Yeller's female pup, Lil Yella Grin

Not to my taste, but whatever makes her happy!

JillScarlet · 29/12/2018 11:50

Maybe the problem lies with you?
Could it be snobbery?
Judgmentalism?
Inability to pronounce ‘L’ sounds?

lottiegarbanzo · 29/12/2018 11:51

Hard for someone who can't pronounce Ls, like most small children. Hope she's prepared for some years of Yiye eyya.

Liliana is a traditional and beautiful name, like Viviana.

-ella does present the risk of sounding like a germ but who knows, maybe the name has roots somewhere. Have you asked?

Lily is a lovely name.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/12/2018 11:52

But I rather regret posting, as critiquing other people's name choices, on which they have requested no opinion, isn't very kind.

Totorosfluffytummy · 29/12/2018 11:58

Lily is a lovely timeless name.

Ella is a bit of a common name.

Lilyella is just... "different"? I'm not keen on names stuck onto other names like that.
I dislike Mae or May at the end of perfectly good names too.

WrapAndRoll · 29/12/2018 12:08

Lily, Lilia/Lilya and Lillian are all nice.

whatausername · 29/12/2018 12:42

Inability to pronounce ‘L’ sounds?

Rather ableist JillScarlet

leghoul · 29/12/2018 12:44

Liliana is a beautiful name and Eliana is also a well known Hispanic name, not made up (re Dance Moms comment)

Coldtoes28 · 29/12/2018 12:53

Lily - not chavvy in itself, but common and boring at this moment in time
Lilly/lillie - a bit chavvy - yooneek spellings
Lily-mai/mae/Rae - yes chavvy
Lilia - not chavvy, classic
Lillian - definitely not chavvy, also classic
Liliana - see above
Lilyelle/lilyella - chavvy as made up.

Milasmummy · 29/12/2018 13:08

Btw this post wasn’t meant to offend, I was literally just intrigued.

It appears that Lilian/Lilia/Liliana are “classic” but are they not in essence the same thing as lilyellaas they are a collaboration of different names?:

Lilian = lily Ann
Lilia = lily with an a at the end
Liliana = Lily ana

Sorry, but I think it's really bitchy picking at someone's name choice. It her choice, not yours. And no, I have not got a Lily, or an Ella.

KissHerYouBrilliantFool · 29/12/2018 13:22

My daughter is called Lily and we are about as middle class and unchavvy as they come. I think LilyElla is quite a nice name too.

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2018 14:06

Lily is ok but overused and I don't like Lil.
Ella is ok but a little too popular.
Fenella, Gabriella and Daniela are ok, but not my choice. Floella was a bit different. Lily Ella is ok but Lily-Ella isn't and Lilyella is even worse.
Other spellings of Lily, I would avoid.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/12/2018 14:07

Um OP, have you ever travelled outside the UK, or, while here, met people from different countries and cultural backgrounds? Haven't you noticed how similar yet subtly different names are prevalent in different countries?

Saying 'those names are all just Lily with something added', so the English Lily is 'correct' and eveything else is a random, affected addition, is just bonkers cultural chauvinism.

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2018 14:26

Lily is nice because of the flower.
Lillie Langtry was a nn.
Liliana, Viviana and so on just seem too long.

thisisjustdaft · 29/12/2018 14:33

Liliana is a traditional and beautiful name, like Viviana

Not that traditional (in England at any rate) - only 4 people with the name Liliana were registered in the hundred year period between 1840 and 1940 according to FreeBMD. Viviana doesn't fare all that much better with 6.

MikeUniformMike · 29/12/2018 14:47

Apart from being long, how are they pronounced?
Lily-Ah-na, Lil-yanna, Lily-Anna...?
It'll just end up being Lil or Viv.

lottiegarbanzo · 29/12/2018 14:47

See my post next but one above yours thisisjustdaft. Classic and English are not the same thing. OP is querying traditional vs made-up names.

BloomsButtons · 29/12/2018 15:12

I know a Lileigh. Always have to think before I write it down!

Ruddle91 · 29/12/2018 20:01

@MikeUniformMike

The Liliana I know is Lily-ah-na
