Narah

I’ve just come across this Scottish baby girl name and think I really like it... supposedly means queen of the wolves.

I’m keen on girls names that are short and strong sounding and Scottish origins would be a bonus...

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!

Is it pronounced Nah-rah (like Saaaaraaa) or Nehrah (Like Sarah) or Nara (with a short A sound)?
I'm not sure....would you have to correct them for the pronunciation?

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 28/12/2018 19:23

It looks like a mis-spelling of Sarah. I’m not sure how I’d pronounce it. Possibly Naaah-rah?

MikeUniformMike · 28/12/2018 19:25

Not seen it before but would guess it to be nah-rah to rhyme with Lara, Cara and Sara but not Sarah or Sarra.
Might get confused with Norah.
Otherwise why not.

Mynameisntmaud · 28/12/2018 19:31

I've never seen or heard of this. My first thought was it's pronounced nar-ah and if so I have to say I really really like it.
Not as keen if it's pronounced nair-ah ( like sarah) but it's still nice

Mynameisntmaud · 28/12/2018 19:31

Ooh and I just love "queen of the wolves"

BeeKeeping · 28/12/2018 19:41

DH thinks it might be a little try hard as we’ve literally never heard it before....

I think it’s pronounced na.. rah to rhyme with Sara

You really can't believe most baby name websites. Anybody can suggest anything there, with no basis in reality.

The Scottish Gaelic for 'queen' is 'banrigh' (ban-ree).
The Scottish Gaelic for 'wolf' is madadh or madadh allaidh
The Scottish Gaelic for queen of the wolves would be something like 'banrigh na madaidhean'. But traditionally, wolves were not admired in Gaelic culture; rather, they were hated and feared. You named your enemies after them - like the cruel nobleman the 'Wolf of Badenoch' - not your daughters.

There is an interesting bilingual children's book (Gaelic and English) featuring wolves: [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/Madaidhean-Allaidh-Air-Feadh-Aite-Everywhere/dp/095579464?tag=mumsnetforum-211]]

If you try Googling, Narah is a surname in India.

What flora said.

This name has come up here before, I'm sure. There are a handful of Narahs in the Scottish records, but all appear to be a transcription error for Norah.

MumUnderTheMoon · 28/12/2018 22:56

Annella meaning "grace"
Elspeth meaning "chosen by god"
Greer meaning "watchful"
mariota meaning "pearl"
All lovely Scottish girls names

ShadyLady53 · 29/12/2018 23:12

I know someone who has just used it as a middle name. I think its ok and still fairly unusual.

ShadyLady53 · 29/12/2018 23:13

Should say she wanted it in her daughter's name because she likes Game of Thrones, Women Who Run With The Wolves and, her words, wants to raise a little "she-wolf".

babysharkah · 29/12/2018 23:19

Never seen or heard it - def nit Norah? Narah sounds harsh.

BeeKeeping · 30/12/2018 19:10

Hmmmm... maybe not as fabulous as I first thought. Always good to have a sounding board though so thank you. The name search continues!
