Rory nn Romily?

We've discovered we are having a baby girl and so now can properly start to think about names, yey!

I love:

Romily
Adaline

Like:

Clara
Ottilie
Mila

DH is not sure but does like Rory as a nn - but not Aurora (honestly - nightmare 😂).

I read somewhere that Rory can be used as a nn for Romily? What do you think?

I already have a Matilda.

What else might I like? I want something super beautiful, not too common and like shortenings that are like boys names etc.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Never heard of the boy's name Rory as a nn for Romily. It'll be shortened to Rom by schoolfriends.
Not keen on any of your names but that's just me.

SellFridges · 23/12/2018 10:54

We’ve got a Romilly. We assumed she would end up with the nick name Romy but she is unshakably Rom at school and at home now.

MikeUniformMike · 23/12/2018 12:25

Rory as a nn is a bit naff. Romy is nice though. Not keen on the other names.
Rory makes me think of Rory Bremner and Rory McGrath.

Gillyhicks · 23/12/2018 17:51

I would use Romy as a nickname for Romily.

In Gilmore Girls Rory’s full name is Lorelei, If you like that instead of Aurora?

BertrandRussell · 23/12/2018 17:52

Rory is a boy’s name.

ZebraKid71 · 23/12/2018 17:54

I like Rory as a nn for a girl, however it doesn't really go for Romilly.

lanbro · 23/12/2018 17:54

My dd is Bromily and always gets Brom so I imagine Romilly would be Rom...

I loved the name Lorelei, was a contender before we went for Bromily

Lilao · 23/12/2018 17:56

I don't think I'd use Ottilie as often Matilda becomes Tilly and I imagine Ottilie would as well?

littlepooch · 23/12/2018 18:03

I have a Romilly. If her name is ever shortened it is to Roms. I can't imagine Rory being used to be honest. I still love the name and so glad we used it X

littlepooch · 23/12/2018 18:04

I thought we would use Romy but so far that hasn't happened.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/12/2018 18:04

I think Ro (rhyming with oh) is a nice nickname for Romilly.

MadeInCornwallx3 · 23/12/2018 19:15

Yes - it was definitely a push!

Currently thinking:

Adaline
Romily
Clara
Mila

Very open to ideas. I feel a bit confused about it all 🙈

I think Romily and Matilda sound lovely together.

Santababyclaus · 23/12/2018 19:28

Romilly is beautiful, why would you want to shorten it to Rory? Confused

MadeInCornwallx3 · 23/12/2018 21:14

Just to clarify - I like the full name Romilly but hubby not sure So was just trying to show him that it came with lots of options!

I use Matilda, not Tilly and would use Romilly not a nn.

YahBasic · 23/12/2018 21:18

I love Adelaide, but with Matilda it might sound a bit too much.

Delilah also came to mind. Clara, Cleo or Thea, maybe?

ManicLoki · 23/12/2018 21:24

I LOVE Romilly, gorgeous name. DP was having none of it sadly.

I was going to suggest Aurora if you wanted Rory but I see that's already a no.

Nothing useful to add OP other than to say you have fabulous taste in names and these bloody partners can be an almighty pita at times Grin

slappinthebass · 23/12/2018 21:34

The Romily/Romany I know both go by Ro or Romy Which I think is more obvious than Rom. However if you introduce as Romily (Rory) in text messages/emails/social media right from the start then Rory will stick. I don't think it's too much of a stretch.

slappinthebass · 23/12/2018 21:37

I do love Rory for a girl but I dislike the popular Aurora.

What about Francesca (nn Frankie)
Theodora nn Teddy/Tedi/Dora/Thea
Tess
Tessa
Marlowe
Marley
Tabitha

Zazia · 23/12/2018 22:43

I'm with the other poster and don't see it like a big stretch. Nick names don't even have to come from full names.

MadeInCornwallx3 · 23/12/2018 23:04

@Gillyhicks I hadn't heard of Loralei but I do like it! I guess you can also have Laurie as a nn for that.

Will add to the thinking list!

BikeRunSki · 23/12/2018 23:29

DD night have been Lorelei, but the mythological Lorelei were horrible.

Thomasin/Thomasina - Cornish, and abbreviates to a boys name ?

I ageee, it is too far fetched for Rory to be a nn for Romily.

DramaAlpaca · 24/12/2018 01:39

Romilly is nice.

Rory is a strong male name that derives from 'red king' in Irish. Using it as a girls' name just doesn't work.

RedDwarves · 24/12/2018 08:26

Rory isn't a shortening for Romilly. Romy is.

Astronica · 24/12/2018 09:03

Romilly is lovely. And Romilly and Matilda make a great pair of sisters.

I think Rory is a great nn for Romilly (I also like Romy). You can choose to use anything you like as a nickname. There are no set rules about this no matter what people may say. I much prefer Rory for Romilly than for Aurora.
