Nickname for Elizabeth

We are expecting DD2 this Spring and are really stuck on a name. We both love Elizabeth though I'm finding it hard to find a nickname I like (while i would be happy for the name to be used in full, I'm not sure this would be realistic once she reaches school age). Really not a big fan of the usual nicknames such as Lizzie, Liz, Libby, Betty, Betsy etc. Don't mind Elle or Ellie though worried they are too popular. What do people think of Ezzie? It's really growing on me though worried it's too 'out there' as not a normal shortening for Elizabeth. Was also thinking about 'Bee' but worried this might also be too much of a stretch. DD1 is Lucy.

I once read somewhere that Queen Elizabeth's childhood nickname was Lilibet, and I think it's quite cute.

We have an Elizabeth who is called Ellie or Eliza. As a baby she was itsy bitsy betsy. 😬

LesLavandes · 16/12/2018 09:43

Lillie

daisypond · 16/12/2018 10:36

Bettina?
Bess?
Izzie/Ezzie sound very similar. But ubiquitous for Isabel.

NotANotMan · 16/12/2018 10:38

If you don't like any of the (many) nicknames for Elizabeth then don't call her Elizabeth!

CloserIAm2Fine · 16/12/2018 10:56

Elizabeth is great and has so many potential nicknames! But since you hate all of them I really wouldn’t use it! Because very quickly it’ll be out of your control and she will decide on a nickname that you hate.

MarinaMarinara · 16/12/2018 11:00

I know an Elizabeth known as Lily and also a Bess (constantly assumed to be Beth though) and one who actually is Beth.

theveryhighlife · 16/12/2018 11:01

Eliza

TeenTimesTwo · 16/12/2018 11:02

It is perfectly possible to go through school and life as an Elizabeth if that is what the person wants.
(It helps if there is 'another' Elizabeth around who uses Liz, as then there is a Liz and an Elizabeth and people are less likely to try to shorten it.)

flissfloss65 · 16/12/2018 11:03

My friend at school went by Izzie as a child. Once she grew up she decided to stick with Elizabeth.

Grinchly · 16/12/2018 11:04

Why a nickname. Elizabeth is beautiful. All the fuss for an extra two syllables. Are folks really that lazy?

Astronica · 16/12/2018 12:04

I also like Ezzie for a nn for Elizabeth. It works fine, and there are no rules about these things despite what some say - use anything you want. Bee also works. I love to come across people with classic names and unexpected nicknames.

3timeslucky · 16/12/2018 13:04

If you call a child Elizabeth it gives her a lot of options as to the name she chooses for herself when she's older. You may think that's a good or bad thing.

It is almost inevitable (but not entirely) that it will get shortened. If you don't like any of the shortened versions then you can try sticking with Elizabeth ... but even that quickly become Lisbeth (just to save a few syllables).

I like Libby and Beth. But I like them enough that I'd probably choose them as the child's name and not as a diminutive.

RoomWithALoon · 16/12/2018 14:53

I know an Elizabeth who goes by Tilly - or usually Tilly-beth, but that's barely a nickname! I get why people are saying "just call her Elizabeth" but realistically, she's going to end up with a shortened version once she's at school. If you don't go in with one, it's likely to end up being the most obvious - and probably therefore one you won't like!

knittedjest · 16/12/2018 14:59

My Elizabeth is an Izzy.

Countrybumpkin19 · 16/12/2018 16:13

Thanks everyone for your ideas. Given me lots to think about! I do quite like Eliza though not sure if that's more a name in itself. Also the more I think about 'Ezzie' the more I feel a bit nervous about it. Would she get 'lezzie Ezzie' jibes in the playground? Would love her to be 'Elizabeth' forever though agree with posters that this would be unlikely as people love to shorten names.

Our Elizabeth is Libby or Elspeth. Her brother calls her lily sometimes (not sure where it came from!). It's a beautiful diverse name. She is also of course called Elizabeth :)

DeepIn40 · 16/12/2018 19:44

Eliza
Elise

DeepIn40 · 16/12/2018 19:44

Elisa

Viebienremplie · 16/12/2018 19:54

You don't get any control over nicknames when they get older I'm afraid. I've learned this with DS who has a long name that can be shortened in a couple of different ways and he and his friends went with a different one to the one we use at home. Now aged 8 it embarrasses him if I use our short name in front of his friends!

Don't call her Elizabeth if you can't live with the usual nicknames.

FrigideBarjot · 16/12/2018 21:06

I know an Elisabeth known as Babette. She's French though.

bellsonthesleigh · 16/12/2018 21:10

I love the name Elizabeth; Beth would be my favourite nickname.

TatianaLarina · 16/12/2018 21:10

I know a Whizz.

TatianaLarina · 16/12/2018 21:11

If you went for Elisabeth with an s, she could be Elise.

speakfriendandenter · 16/12/2018 21:28

What about Busy? I think the actress Busy Philips is an Elizabeth.
