I do really like Remy. I’m not sure of Romilly... I prefer Romy as a stand alone name.

Remi/Remy is a French boy's name. It comes from a Latin word meaning 'oarsman'. St Remi/Remy is a famous male saint honoured by statues in many European churches and cathedrals. Also the name of a very famous brand of brandy.

Traditionally, it's about as female as Roger. But each to their own... No offence intended. Am just stating facts. Today people can and do choose what they want to do.

OneMoreWish · 15/12/2018 21:01

Do you like Roma? The mother Rome was named after? X

daisypond · 15/12/2018 21:06

The Roma people are an ethnic group - I wouldn't, unless you're Romani yourself.

todayiwin · 15/12/2018 21:09

I know a girl Remy. It suits her.

The name Douglas was originally female, there are girls and boys called bailey, shannon, ashley, aiden ect. Go for whichever you like best. Both are unusual enough that most people won't know or care about the origin and just think they're pretty names. Also Olivia Wilde (one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen) played a Dr called Remy Hadley on House M.D. which is where I first heard the name.

florascotia2 · 15/12/2018 23:08

Douglas was originally a place name. In Scottish Gaelic it means 'dark river'. It then became the surname of a noble family, the earls of Douglas. Like many other Scottish surnames, it was sometimes used for girls as a special sign of respect for ancestors or when there was no male heir to continue a family surname. But almost always because it was a family name, not because it was specifically a female name. See page headed 'Introduction to First Edition: Scope of the Work'
in P Hanks and others, A Dictionary of First Names, Oxford University Press 1996 . Searchable online text at books.google.co.uk/books?id=9nd05X_awIgC&pg=PA160&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q&f=false

Haha. I though you were naming hamsters.

Orlande · 15/12/2018 23:16

Romy short for Rosemary.

Shadow1234 · 16/12/2018 01:30

I really love both. My daughters friend is called Remi (spelt this way, she is 21). I think over the years it has gradually been used for girls as well as boys. If you love it, then go for it.

Astronica · 16/12/2018 06:30

I prefer Romy.

PhoenixBuchanan · 16/12/2018 07:01

Romy doesn't really work as a nn for Romilly because of the different pronunciation. DD is Romilly and we planned to call her Romy, but when she was born it just seemed weird. She is mainly called her full name, or Rom.

Romy is lovely, OP. Remy is a boys' name!

Lisaturtle · 16/12/2018 07:07

I've known both names and they are both men! Can't imagine a girl with either name.

RedDwarves · 16/12/2018 07:54

Remy is masculine.

So, Romy.

ohchristmastreeoh · 16/12/2018 08:13

I prefer Remy, even though others have said it's a boys name (which I didn't know) 😳

I have a Romani, Romy is lovely too.

MyOtherProfile · 16/12/2018 19:16

Remy does have a lovely friendly, smiley connotation.

Remy or Romy?
Pancakepoop · 16/12/2018 20:43

#MyOtherProfile I was expecting someone to mention Ratatouille but seems like the only two posts mentioning it are both by you Grin

oooerrmissus · 16/12/2018 20:53

I knew a Romy, short for Romaine which is a lovely name. Also makes the roam-y pronunciation flow a little better I think.

TatianaLarina · 16/12/2018 20:57

Remy to me is a French boy’s name + Remy Martin cognac.

Romy but I prefer Romilly.

TatianaLarina · 16/12/2018 20:59

have a Romani

Very pretty - do you pronounce it RoMARNi or ROmani?

taleforthetimebeing · 16/12/2018 21:06

My daughter is Romy - full name Romilly always known as Romy - we pronounce it Rom-we not Roamy.

The other 2 Romy’s I have known pronounce it Rom-ee but I know the movie pronounces Roamy

taleforthetimebeing · 16/12/2018 21:07

Sorry autocorrect Rom-ee! Not Rom-we

MyOtherProfile · 17/12/2018 06:58

@Pancakepoop I know! I'm stunned nobody else has talked about it. It's all I see when I hear the name Grin
