Scottish boys names which English family don't find weird/can pronounce!

Myself and DH are English but lived in Scotland over 10 years. We want a Scottish/celtic name but that English families can spell and nothing too used so Alexander is out, James is also out and DH doesn't want any royal ref names!
We can't agree on what our favourite is!
And due in 8 weeks....

So far we have:
Tristan (my fav using the Scottish Saint ref)
Finlay (DH fav)
Logan
Arran (DH not so sure)
Cameron (my worry is family will think Tory ref....)

Not Scottish but on the maybe pile is Rueben.

Any suggestions/help Blush

Lachlan/Lachlan?

twiglet · 15/12/2018 03:43

I don't think my family or DH family would be able to pronounce Lachlan!

Hamish, Harris, Angus, Murray, Campbell there are loads!

Madeline88 · 15/12/2018 03:53

Really? Lachlan is extremely well known and very easy to say, it’s not like your family are from a faraway land!

Madeline88 · 15/12/2018 03:53

I think Hamish fits your criteria though or Rory

coolwalking · 15/12/2018 03:53

Finlay is great but my favourite name is Gordon

Divgirl2 · 15/12/2018 04:40

Logan is kind of a...non-Scottish Scottish name. It's certainly a Scottish surname (and I think there's a place called Logan which is probably what it comes from), but I'd say as a first name it's American more than anything.

Tristan as well isnt Scottish. Think it's actually Welsh, but before the Welsh were Welsh, if that makes sense.

Finlay is becoming very very popular up here at the minute (think I've met 9 babies in the last 8 months with the name). So at least he'd be in good company, although if popularity is an issue I'd maybe steer clear.

What about Angus? Or Alistair, don't see many Alistair's anymore and it's a good Scottish name. Or Euan? Fraser? Fraser is a lovely name.

Caelan? (easy to say - just tell them it's Caitlin without the T)

I think most Scottish names will be easy for them to say - even Ruairidh isnt hard to pronounce (brewery without the B) although the spelling is tricky. Whatever you name him your family will learn to say and spell so I wouldn't be overly worried.

jessstan2 · 15/12/2018 06:59

Cameron is lovely, no-one will think of the ex PM and his first name is David.

Robert
Alistair

Redgreencoverplant · 15/12/2018 06:59

Duncan

I like Tristan from your list.

ReginaPhalange89 · 15/12/2018 07:57

Is Tristan Scottish? 🤔 I'm Scottish and didn't know that , never come across a Tristan! Really dislike it actually, sounds like a posh twat name . Sorry ! Haha.

Loads of lovely Scottish boys names. I don't think Lachlan is difficult to say. Hamish , Angus , Harris and Murray are my favs . Cameron is lovely too.

Procne · 15/12/2018 08:00

I’m having difficulty thinking of any Scottish names which would be difficult for the average English person to pronounce. What kinds of name are you ruling out on pronounceability? Lachlan isn’t hard to say!

twiglet · 15/12/2018 08:08

Thats good news about not linking Cameron Smile

Yes I thought Finlay was popular Finn was my DH other suggestion.

I like Campbell but my dad ruined it with by making reference to soup and making fun of it.

I knew about the mainly Welsh part of Tristan I was going by the modern version of St Drostan a Scottish Saint.

I'd not heard of Caelan before, I also like Harris but DH vetoed it.
