Scottish boys names which English family don't find weird/can pronounce!

Myself and DH are English but lived in Scotland over 10 years. We want a Scottish/celtic name but that English families can spell and nothing too used so Alexander is out, James is also out and DH doesn't want any royal ref names!
We can't agree on what our favourite is!
And due in 8 weeks....

So far we have:
Tristan (my fav using the Scottish Saint ref)
Finlay (DH fav)
Logan
Arran (DH not so sure)
Cameron (my worry is family will think Tory ref....)

Not Scottish but on the maybe pile is Rueben.

Any suggestions/help Blush

I also love Tristan but agree it's not particularly Scottish.

Fraser
Murdo
Archibald
Brodie
Craig
Euan
Kyle

Thanks all. Logan has come in at number 4 on Scottish popular list so that one is out.

Both DH and I had very popular names growing up (there were 6 with the same name in my year) and therefore want to avoid the popular ones as we both were given stupid nicknames which we want to avoid.

I see someone mentioned Murdoch, it’s my last name and I love it, but please don’t. Firstly, it’s not pronounced Murdock as so many people (Scots too, not just non Scots) pronounce it, it makes me grit my teeth every time. Secondly, it’s an arse to say to folk without getting “how do you spell that?” in response. It’s an awesome name though, although I’m clearly biased.

I like Innes, Iain and Murdo best.

grissini · 18/12/2018 17:40

How do you pronounce Murdoch then?

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 18/12/2018 17:43

It’s virtually impossible to explain by writing it down. The closest sound I can think of is the “ch” sound in German, so the ch at the end of Murdoch is the same as the ch sound at the end of ich in German. The sodding A team killed my name for an entire generation Grin

grissini · 18/12/2018 17:44

I know what you mean but so so minor! Especially as Scots also say Murdock

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 18/12/2018 17:49

grissini I know, I said that! I disagree that it’s minor though, it’s rude and lazy. If you’d spent the better part of 40 years having your name mispronounced I doubt you’d think it minor.

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 18/12/2018 17:50

Sorry rude and lazy when Scots (who know how to pronounce it) pronounce it wrongly.

Tartyflette · 18/12/2018 17:56

If your DPs/DPILs can pronounce Loch reasonably correctly (as in Lomond) they can surely pronounced Lachlan?
It's the same sound. Murdoch too. Grin

ChristmasTwatteryDoesMyHeadIn · 18/12/2018 17:57

Tartyflette yes! Why have I never thought of using loch as a comparison???

Thorfinn is technically Norse but is popular in the far north of Scotland.

Beyond those you're heading into unpronouncable gaelic names or super-popular ones.

Fraser
Iain
Robert

If you are English or an Anglo more generally, I don't think you need to worry about the ch in Murdoch or Lachlan, as it is not part of your speech. Lachlan is one of the most popular names in Australia because one of their founding fathers, who came from the Inner Hebrides, had the name. They say 'LAKlan' or 'LOKlan' and no-one is offended.
