Olivia and Olive?

Rosey94 · 04/12/2018 18:41

So my name is Olivia Rose.
Im having a girl and I love the name Olive.
She will be having my middle name.
Would it be weird for us to call her Olive Rose which is so close to my name?

People call me Liv for short so Im worried Olive could get shortened to Liv too?

Opinions please? Im so stuck for other names!

I think that would be odd.

Dinosforall · 04/12/2018 18:43

Yes it would be weird. Are there really no other names you like?

MsSquiz · 04/12/2018 18:47

What about using Rose as her first name?
So Rose Olive or Rose Olivia?

Rosey94 · 04/12/2018 18:49

No she can't be called Rose unfortunatly.

It not something I would do, but if you were a bloke and wanted to name your child after you it would be traditional and no one would be bothered. So meh, up to you really

valafitz · 04/12/2018 18:54

I personally dislike the name Olive, but then I hate olives. I would rather name your child after your self than just having that slight modification.

That being said is your child and is your choice, try not to care too much about what the other may think/say.

hamzilla · 04/12/2018 18:54

Would you have an Olivia and an Oliver? If yes, then I'm not sure there's anything anyone can say to talk you out of it. If no, same rules apply.

hamzilla · 04/12/2018 18:55

Sorry, I meant would you have an Oliver, not Olivia and Oliver!

PippilottaLongstocking · 04/12/2018 18:57

I’ve known several boys named after their dads, with the exact same name rather than just similar. Nothing wrong with passing names down through the family, I think it’s fine! I’ve known a Tillie-Ann with a daughter called Lillie-Ann which is far too similar, but I think Olivia and Olive are just different enough for it to work

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 04/12/2018 19:30

Bit weird tbh especially when there are so many lovely name choices out there.

I have always thought the name Olive was really ugly (probably because I hate olives and it reminds me of Olive Oil from Popeye). Strangely enough I like the names Olivia and Liv/Livvie. How about something similar? Octavia, Ophelia, Clover, Genevieve, Ivy, Ava, Violet, Liberty ....

MummyBearRose · 04/12/2018 19:56

Lovely name but a little bit too similar xxx

MummyBearRose · 04/12/2018 19:56

what about orla ? 💝

Rosey94 · 04/12/2018 20:15

Thank you for all your responses. Still so unsure. I love the name Olive so much but just think its too like my name.

I think Olive is a beautiful name, I think it's up to u at the end of the day, like others have said Dads do it all the time.

RiverTam · 04/12/2018 20:18

Yes, it would. And Olive is a really really horrid name. I saw someone calling their DD Olive in the supermarket the other day and to say it didn’t suit her (she looks about 9) was an understatement, but then I can’t think who it would suit.

Itscrunchtime1234 · 04/12/2018 20:21

I love the name Olive! Very almost chose it for my dd but parents and grandparents really tried putting me off.

They don’t like what we went with anyway so kinda wish I’d just chosen that and not listened!

A lot of boys are named after their father. If you love it then go for it. Who care what people’s think. Dd is almost 2 and I wish I knew now what I did then. Go for what you like

ernjas · 04/12/2018 20:21

I think it's a bit weird, sorry!

ZebraKid71 · 04/12/2018 20:44

I really love the name Olive but unless you plan to call her Ollie for short is too confusing for me!

lebkuchenlover · 04/12/2018 21:01

There's thousands of names to choose from, and you really want to name your dd Olive when you're Olivia?! Really?

Phebes · 04/12/2018 21:19

Sorry, I think it’s too close, especially with the same middle name too.

SnowyPaws5 · 04/12/2018 22:03

They are obviously very similar. But if you love it go for it. If I have a DD, I would consider a name that I like that is very similar to my own.

Your DD will be a person in her own right. Known as Olive to all her friends, teachers etc. and she won't be affected by having a name similar to her mum's! And I don't see how you could be affected either!

CloserIAm2Fine · 04/12/2018 22:18

I really wouldn’t. And I would say the same if it was a man wanting to name his son after him. I think its important to let your child have their own identity rather than be an extension of yours

TheCraicDealer · 04/12/2018 22:32

I think if they were both longer names with numerous nicknames it would be ok, but with Olivia/Olive you've literally got Ol or Liv. And you're called one of those day to day. It's just too similar imho, unless you genuinely don't care that people will assume you've named her after yourself.

Notquiteagandt · 04/12/2018 22:37

How do you introduce yourself to new people? Just thinking of baby groups or social occassions getting introduced as olivia and olive might not roll off the tounge well. People may get muddled & just call her olivia by mistake.

BBQueen · 04/12/2018 22:40

Why not change your name to Olive and give the baby a fresh name?
