Phillipa, Harriet, Katherine, Keziah, Georgina, Henrietta? And middle name help

I like names that can be shortened to nick names and want a name where the shorter version will be used the most day to day, will be introduced as shorter name. I know a lot of people don't like this or say just use the short version on birth certificate but I want to give options for when they're older on CV's etc.

Phillipa - Pippa
Harriet - Hattie
Katherine - Kitty - Don't like Katherine as much as other longer names but do Like Kitty
Keziah - Kizzy - New to list but really like it, old testament name
Georgina - Georgie - Warming to this one
Henrietta - Hettie - Not sure if a bit too long and fussy? What's nicer Hettie or Hattie?

Middle name will be Florence which is a family name. Also want to add in my fathers name as a middle name as he has passed away. So would be first name, Florence, my dads male name then surname. Is that weird? I just really want baby to have connection to grandad they won't meet.

Hattie and Pippa sound classy. Keziah is probably one of the worst names I’ve seen put forward on this site and Kizzy is even worse. Just my opinion of course 🤷🏼‍♀️ Hattie or Pippa all the way!

AhoyDelBoy · 05/12/2018 13:00

I like PPs suggestion of Edie too.

Twickerhun · 05/12/2018 13:09

They are all very long names to have with 2 middle names. Is your surname also long? They are all quite a mouthful to land a child with!

sycamore54321 · 05/12/2018 13:57

I am sorry for the loss of your father.

I’ve tried to word this sensitively. When I read the title with your shortlist, it struck me that it is almost entirely feminized versions of male names, and then you will add a male middle name as well. From an outsider perspective, that risks reading a tiny bit like you would have preferred a son to a daughter. On the basis that having a male (second) middle name is very unusual, I would definitely avoid from the Georgia type first names.

I think the advice above about your child’s inevitable connection to her grandfather, regardless of her name, is very accurate. She will know him because you will have photos of him/tell stories of what he was like with you when you were her age/comment “oh that was your grandad’s favorite song” when it comes on the radio, etc. These are far more powerful and meaningful connections than a name. I think there is a risk that as an awkward teenager, your daughter might end up resenting having such an unusual middle name, which would clearly be the opposite effect to that intended. And this may be compounded if she also has a masculine-based first name.

Pregnancy is such an emotional time anyway and added to the stress of bereavement makes is all very hard. I guess that this is a really long winded way of saying that I think Katherine works best out of your choices. Best wishes

Georgina is my favourite

MikeUniformMike · 05/12/2018 20:37

Not RTFT.
Phillipa - It's spelt Philippa.
Harriet - Hattie - fine
Katherine - Kitty - Don't like Katherine as much as other longer names but do Like Kitty - fine
Keziah - Kizzy - New to list but really like it, old testament name. No
Georgina - Georgie - Warming to this one - yes
Henrietta - Hettie - Not sure if a bit too long and fussy? What's nicer Hettie or Hattie? - not keen. Henrietta Lamb.

Do your dad's name - awesome idea. Sod the fact it isn't a girls name. It has meaning and is special to you.

NameChange30 · 05/12/2018 20:51

Oh come on. You wouldn't give your son a girl's name, not even as a middle name.

ZebraKid71 · 05/12/2018 21:17

@cheesetheday Keziah is pronounced Kez-eye-ah, Kezia can be pronounced the same way, but also be pronounced Kez-ee-ah (as per the Scottish MP) or Kez-aay-ah (to rhyme with slayer).

Out of Kizzy, Hattie and Pippa I would say Kizzy goes best with your other children’s names. It could always be short for Katherine. So Katherine Florence Edward (nn Kizzy). I love the use of your fathers name and plan to do this too whether ours is girl or boy

Buenavista · 06/12/2018 06:35

Some people might think it was another surname / maiden name. I don’t think people will bat an eyelid at Edward, ignore the other comments op

NameChange30 · 06/12/2018 07:00

Edward isn't a surname.

I love including your dad's name. A second middle name doesn't get used in every day life so it should be a name you love or because it has special meaning.

One of my dc has a similar arrangement for middle names.

I like Hattie, Pippa and Florence as names too.

DuchessofPemberley · 07/12/2018 05:21

I also love the idea of using your father’s name as a second middle name.

thefarrierswife · 04/01/2019 11:09

Thought I'd post an update, we seem to be going for Kizzy (Keziah) as DH loves Kizzy as a day to day name.

We've decided not to use my fathers name so will be Keziah Florence surname. Kizzy Surname day to day, school etc.

Thank you for all your comments, it's so hard to decide!!

ernjas skins fan by any chance Wink?
Kizzy is a lovely nn op

WillardJStevens · 04/01/2019 13:55

Both my girls have my maiden name as a middle name - is also a male first name.

I love Hattie (I have one) and Kezia - my Other Dd has this as another middle name as it is a family name and I wasn’t bold enough to use as a first name. Though I can’t imagine my DD with a name other than the one we gave her, I do love Kezia (Kez-eye-ah in our family) and kind of wish we’d gone for it.

thefarrierswife · 04/01/2019 14:05

@WillardJStevens Hattie is lovely, we like both Hattie and Kizzy and will definitely use the shortened forms day to day, school, name tags etc. Will have to look at the spelling whether to use Keziah or without the h.

I love all those names/nicknames. I particularly like Keziah and you would also have the choice of Kaisy as a shortened version. But they are all really lovely.

I don't see a problem with using a male name before the surname - my friend's daughter has her grandfather's name and it sounds like a double barreled surname.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 04/01/2019 16:36

I know a Philippa (one L, 2 Ps) who has always loathed being called Pippa. Woe betide anyone who assumes it's a given.

RedDwarves · 04/01/2019 23:22

I love Katherine, but shortened to Kate, not Kitty.

RedDwarves · 04/01/2019 23:23

Also, yes, Keziah is kez-eye-ah, not kez-eeh-ah.
