Phillipa, Harriet, Katherine, Keziah, Georgina, Henrietta? And middle name help

I like names that can be shortened to nick names and want a name where the shorter version will be used the most day to day, will be introduced as shorter name. I know a lot of people don't like this or say just use the short version on birth certificate but I want to give options for when they're older on CV's etc.

Phillipa - Pippa
Harriet - Hattie
Katherine - Kitty - Don't like Katherine as much as other longer names but do Like Kitty
Keziah - Kizzy - New to list but really like it, old testament name
Georgina - Georgie - Warming to this one
Henrietta - Hettie - Not sure if a bit too long and fussy? What's nicer Hettie or Hattie?

Middle name will be Florence which is a family name. Also want to add in my fathers name as a middle name as he has passed away. So would be first name, Florence, my dads male name then surname. Is that weird? I just really want baby to have connection to grandad they won't meet.

I quite like that Philippa means lover of horses or horses friend as we are a very horsey family and we already have pony ready and waiting for baby. Obviously might not end up horsey but given both sides of our family are incredibly horsey it's quite likely.

@astronica I feel Henrietta is a little too much, maybe Hettie could work with Harriet if we decide we prefer that to Hattie. I too really like Kizzy but don't love Keziah.

I think we will use my father's name as the second middle name, it's important to me and as middle names are hardly used I don't think it would be a problem.

What is your father's name? How will it flow?

I love Philippa, and it sounds perfect for your horsey family!

Saisong · 04/12/2018 09:36

My new cat is called Kezia/Kizzy - so (obviously biased) that is my fave.

Cosmoa · 04/12/2018 09:37

Definitely Keziah 😁

MrsMcW · 04/12/2018 09:44

Katherine by far the best. I like Pippa but not Philippa so much.

LOATHE Henrietta. I've known a couple and both were PITAs. Both also got shortened to Henry / Hen which you may want to consider.

thefarrierswife · 04/12/2018 11:30

@knockmedown It's Edward, I'm not overly concerned how it flows if the first name and Florence flows. It's really for sentimental reasons, I want my child to know who their grandad was and have a connection to him. I have always liked Pippa, and we are horse mad here!!

@saisong that's my worry though is it too nick namey? I do really like Kizzy though, hmm.

@MrsMcW I'm not as keen on Katherine but do like Kitty. It would definitely be the shorter version day to day and introduced as that too.

Keziah but I wouldn't shorten it. It's beautiful as it is!

ReginaPhalange89 · 04/12/2018 16:13

I like a lot of the short names but don't particularly like many of the longer "full" names, Phillipa is ok and Harriet is nice . I really don't like Henrietta, Georgina or Katherine. They're all very dated to me . When I hear Keziah I automatically think of the Scottish mp Keziah Dugdale so that puts me off that one.

Don't like Kitty but all the other shortened versions are sweet. Kate or Katie would be a nicer shortening of Katherine

ReginaPhalange89 · 04/12/2018 16:21

Also I think I'd be more inclined to use Harri as a shortening of Harriet but I know most would probably say it's too boyish

Pemba · 04/12/2018 16:21

I love Georgina and Katherine and like Harriet and Keziah.

I've never liked Philippa , and Pippa as a name doesn't travel well in Europe (google it).

Sorry but I hate Henrietta, find it very clunky and unattractive. Harriet is so much nicer.

BeautifulBlue · 04/12/2018 19:46

Pippa is my favourite, it’s a lovely name & very underused!

NameChange30 · 04/12/2018 19:52

"I want my child to know who their grandad was and have a connection to him."

Your daughter will know who her grandad was regardless of names. Ditto having a connection. What about using his surname? Does he have a middle name that's unisex or that has a female version? What about using his initials to make a name eg if he is Edward Vincent Ellis then you could use Eve.

MummyBearRose · 04/12/2018 20:02

I only like pippa or Hattie just as normal names... really not keen on the long versions! xxx

Momo37 · 04/12/2018 20:49

Keziah and Kezia (Dugdale) are pronounced differently @Regina.
I like Harriet/Hattie.

ReginaPhalange89 · 04/12/2018 22:45

Oh really ? Would never have known lol I want to know what the difference is now ! Literally one letter different

Momo37 · 04/12/2018 23:02

Keziah - Kez-eye-ah
Kezia - Kez-ee-ah
This is based on people I’ve met, suppose everyone will have their own pronunciation!

Sophronia · 04/12/2018 23:09

I know a Kezia who pronounces it kez-eye-ah

CheeseTheDay · 05/12/2018 01:48

Keziah and Kezia are certainly not pronounced differently. Like most Hebrew names with that kind of ending, it can end with just an A, or with an H, the pronunciation doesn't change.

The correct pronunciation is kez-eye-ah, because just as Josiah isn't jos-ee-ah, or Jedidiah isn't jed-id-ee-ah (and so on, so forth, with pretty much every Hebrew name ending in -iah), Keziah isn't kez-ee-ah!!

thefarrierswife · 05/12/2018 09:28

We're down to Pippa, Hattie and Kizzy. We will be using the shortened versions day to day and will introducing as the shortened version can't decide which we like best. Husband is keen on Kizzy.

We have decided we will be using my late fathers name as a second middle name. Maybe because he passed away very recently it feels more important to me to use it.

NameChange30 · 05/12/2018 09:35

I'm sorry for your loss but I hope you change your mind about giving your daughter a man's name.

thefarrierswife · 05/12/2018 09:48

@namechange30 it will be a second middle name so will have 2 girl names first.

OP posts:
Villanellesproudmum · 05/12/2018 09:52

The Henriettas I know, are known as Henri. I like Pippa, I know a Pippa and a Pippy as shortened versions.

AlocAcoc · 05/12/2018 10:09

Pippa and Hattie are both lovely. Is definitely spell it Philippa if you want to shorten it to Pippa though.

I really don’t like Keziah though. I know it is ancient and it shouldn’t be tarred with this brush, but it sounds very ‘Kardashian’ to me.

I’m very sorry for the loss of your father, it sounds like it is very raw. I really wouldn’t give a girl the name Edward though, even as a second middle name. I believe you can edit the birth certificate up to 12 months - could you consider leaving it out for now and then reconsidering later on when things are a bit less raw?

I’m sorry if you don’t like my thoughts, it’s just my opinion. Obviously you have to go with what you love most.

IsThereRoomAtTheInn · 05/12/2018 10:17

I've known a lovely Hetty so that colours my view.

I like Philippa / Pippa very much.

And Katherine / Kitty is lovely too.

I might use Edie as a middle name.

I like Kizzy but not Keziia.
Along those lines I also like Lizzie and Elizabeth.

thefarrierswife · 05/12/2018 10:30

@alocaloc Yes it is very raw and I feel very sad that he won't meet his first grandchild and I also feel sad that baby won't have him in her life as he would of loved being a grandparent and would of played a big role in her life. We do have quite a bit of time yet so maybe we should decide on the first name to go with Florence and then decide on whether we want to add my father's name at a later point. Before this I would of said the same, don't use it. But now I feel like it's important, if we were having a boy it would be a lot easier!

We definitely don't want a Kardashian sounding name! Although she would be known as Kizzy. I start loving one then swap to another, Pippa is lovely as is Hattie.
