Is Poppy too cutesy a name?

DD2 is 3 weeks old and we have yet to decide on a name.

We almost called DD1 Poppy but were worried that although it’s a lovely name for a little girl, it wasn’t ‘grown up’ enough for an adult and was too cutesy.

I still love the name so had planned to call DD2 Poppy (especially as her due date was Remembrance Sunday) but now she’s here I have the same fear and can’t picture an older Poppy.

My dithering has put DH off it a bit now and he prefers Jessica nn Jess. I don’t mind this but I didn’t like the only Jess I knew at school and I keep thinking Jessica Fletcher, especially as our surname starts with an F. It also seems very common where we are.

DD1 is called Elizabeth which I love as its timeless but not that common and lends itself to various nicknames if she doesn’t want to use her full name.

Am I over thinking it too much? Should I just go with what I like or will a cutesy name stop her being taken seriously when she’s an adult?

TIA. I know we’re on the clock!!

Oh yes it suits any age look at lily... I think the significance of the name is lovely too

KERALA1 · 21/11/2018 09:16

Your first instinct is right. Poppy is super cute on a toddler. Cringeworthy on a fully grown adult. Likewise Honey, Daisy etc. Cannot stand those babyish twee names for women - appreciate I will now be shouted down by everyone else but thats my view.

Jess is great. Maybe Poppy as a middle name?

Hundredacrewoods · 21/11/2018 09:18

The name will grow up with the generation - there will be so many middle aged Poppys in a few decades it won't be a problem

kissmelittleass · 21/11/2018 09:20

It's my cats name 😊 lovely on a child not sure about when she'd be older. Teenagers especially tend to shorten names and could become "pops"?

SallyWD · 21/11/2018 09:20

Poppy is not cringe worthy on an adult! I know a 50 year old Poppy who is a doctor and I never think anything of her name. It's a lovely name for all ages.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 21/11/2018 09:23

Lovely name but too cute for me on a grown woman.
Elizabeth and Poppy is a bit of an odd combination - unless it turns into Betsy and Poppy. Wink Feels like the older child will be the "sensible" one and the younger has a licence to be frivolous.

I like Jessica but if it doesn't work for you then start again. It will come to you. Stop listening to the annoying voices.

Nemesis is a lovely girls name.... said in the right tone of voice it will make most grandparents back off until you are ready... Wink

TheWiseWomansFear · 21/11/2018 09:25

I know adult Poppy's they're quite stylish

Twatforahat · 21/11/2018 09:25

I think it’s a bit cutesy, maybe have it as a middle name for the rememberance day.
I can’t fathom Jessica’s popularity at the moment, it’s such a 80/90s name. Elizabeth is great, you need to match it. Do you want a flower name?

Ohyesiam · 21/11/2018 09:27

I’m not a lover of cute, but poppy doesn’t seem too cute to me. It makes me think of a beautiful field of poppies, always such an uplifting sight.
I know an adult poppy, she is not cute, she’s a powerhouse and her name suits her.

DramaAlpaca · 21/11/2018 09:35

Yes. Cutesy, twee names make me cringe. Sorry.

It's totally different in style to the beautiful, classic Elizabeth.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 21/11/2018 09:35

Personally I don’t like Poppy or other cute names as full names. I always come back to thinking as an adult I would hate to have that kind of name, but I know plenty of people feel differently.

How about Josephine? You can use Posy or Josie as nicknames if you want something cute and it fits with Elizabeth. FWIW I don’t hate Jessica, but it’s a bit dated. It’s very 1990s, your DD will probably have several friends with mums called Jessica.

thighofrelief · 21/11/2018 09:41

Poppy is too sweet for me. Names like Elizabeth would be Caroline, Catherine, Mary, Jane - all rather fabulous i think. And Rebecca.

KERALA1 · 21/11/2018 09:42

There is a serious news presenter with real gravitas called Daisy. Total cringe. We should give our girls strong names to go out into the world hate this mimsy cutesy trend.

lebkuchenlover · 21/11/2018 09:43

Elizabeth is beautiful!

Poppy is cutesy, comical and only one letter from poopy Blush. Sorry. I really dislike it.

MollyHuaCha · 21/11/2018 09:44

It's a lovely nn for Penelope.

SparkyBlue · 21/11/2018 09:45

I think the rememberance Sunday link is lovely. Regardless of the name it's lovely to have a meaningful reason why you choose it. Poppy is lovely but it is gone very popular

lebkuchenlover · 21/11/2018 09:46

I think Penny is a much much nicer nickname for Penelope. Poppy also sounds like poppet.

Joinourclub · 21/11/2018 09:46

What about Phillipa nn Pippa ?
Or Penelope nn Penny?

MrWolfknowsthetime · 21/11/2018 09:48

Nice for a pre-schooler or pet. Terrible for an adult.

CherryValance · 21/11/2018 09:51

I think there are more grown up flower names. How about Iris? That goes nicely with Elizabeth.

mossyroundhill · 21/11/2018 09:54

I don't think Poppy is cutesy but I do think it's massively popular at the minute, and therefore lacks meaning to me.
I've always loved the name Jessica though, that would be my choice.

sanpelle · 21/11/2018 09:57

Cringe-worthy, whatever next😂 It's more interesting than your typical Lauren or Stacey, it has more character. I always get compliments on my name every time I introduce myself to someone so I think that it's a good choice OP!

sanpelle · 21/11/2018 10:03

Posted too early🤦🏼‍♀️ I'm called Poppy because I was almost 3 months prem and shouldn't have survived. My DM picked it because it resembles strength (poppy fields after the war). Surprisingly enough my body is really strong and I've survived multiple near death experiences/illnesses etc. I like to think it's because of my name but I'm probably just being silly😂 Even though I'm biased, I'd go for it OP it's a wonderful name!

Kate189 · 21/11/2018 10:06

I think Jessica is a lot better name than Poppy. Poppy almost sounds like Poopy...so could you imagine other children in school will be mean and call you daughter Poopy...In my opinion, it definitely will stop her being taken seriously when she’s an adult.

MrBirlingsAwfulWife · 21/11/2018 10:08

There was a similar thread recently and someone posted the following which I said I would save and reuse so here it is :

We’ve just appointed a Professor in an aeronautical engineering discipline with the first name Daisy. I don’t think a cute name is any barrier to a profession

There was another recent thread asking for oldest person known with top 10 names and there were Poppies on thst thread of all ages up to 90s. It is a traditional flower name that has simply become more popular very recently

The Poppy is a glorious flower in many forms- elegant oriental poppies and bright field poppies. They are symbol of hope and regeneration.

Poppy is a great name.
