Is Poppy too cutesy a name?

DD2 is 3 weeks old and we have yet to decide on a name.

We almost called DD1 Poppy but were worried that although it’s a lovely name for a little girl, it wasn’t ‘grown up’ enough for an adult and was too cutesy.

I still love the name so had planned to call DD2 Poppy (especially as her due date was Remembrance Sunday) but now she’s here I have the same fear and can’t picture an older Poppy.

My dithering has put DH off it a bit now and he prefers Jessica nn Jess. I don’t mind this but I didn’t like the only Jess I knew at school and I keep thinking Jessica Fletcher, especially as our surname starts with an F. It also seems very common where we are.

DD1 is called Elizabeth which I love as its timeless but not that common and lends itself to various nicknames if she doesn’t want to use her full name.

Am I over thinking it too much? Should I just go with what I like or will a cutesy name stop her being taken seriously when she’s an adult?

TIA. I know we’re on the clock!!

I have an 8 year old Poppy and still love it as much today as I did when we named her, as does she!

We did give her a slightly more “grown up” middle name Emilia (which was our 2nd choice) but honestly any uncertainty that it wouldn’t grow with her has been forgotten as she really suits her name...

We do have a forces connection (not the main reason we named her it) but I think it’s more punchy than weak and cutesy, Poppy to me is someone who stands out, is colourful in personality and nature and isn’t afraid to be an individual...all the things my Poppy is!!

I do agree with PP though I’m not sure Elizabeth and Poppy flow together and lunch prefer Elizabeth and Iris or Elizabeth and Rose.

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/11/2018 10:12

I only know one adult Poppy and she isn’t in the least cutesy - she’s super fierce, ambitious and go getting, and already has a PA at 28. Poppy is totally fine. Something like Izzy-Mae I’d think cutesy and not for an adult, Poppy is a proper name to me.

lebkuchenlover · 21/11/2018 10:32

Just because there are 'strong' people named Poppy doesn't make the name any less cutesy!

MrBirlingsAwfulWife · 21/11/2018 11:10

But the point is having a 'cute' sounding name is not a problem.

People put forward the weird idea that it will be a barrier in future life which many of us are saying is not true.

LittleMouseontheDairy · 21/11/2018 12:15

I like the previous suggestions of Josephine (Josie), Penelope (Poppy)...
also what about Polly? It’s similar but I think it ‘grows’ with a child better?
It’s a tricky one, I sympathise! I love Milo but can’t really picture an adult Milo (plus DH has nixed it, sigh).
Most of me wants to say ‘if you love the name - go for it!’ But a bit of me does think Poppy might be a little too cutesy for an adult. Sorry, not much help! Blush

Sophronia · 21/11/2018 12:25

How about using Poppy as a middle name? Maybe something like Alexandra Poppy, Charlotte Poppy, Josephine Poppy, Annabelle Poppy, Harriet Poppy, Susannah Poppy or Matilda Poppy?

WTBE · 21/11/2018 12:31

I don't think poppy is too cutesy and I wouldn't worry too much about the "can you imagine a judge named.. Or can you imagine a adult named.." names change all the time, they will be growing up with alot more people with "out there" names.

crumble82 · 21/11/2018 12:36

I find it a bit cutesy but that’s personal taste. My DD is friends with a couple of Poppy’s and neither of them are cutesy or girly (and neither have ever been called Poopy Confused) and unless the name is completely ridiculous it’s not going to be a barrier on a CV. Go with your gut.

Thatwasfast · 21/11/2018 12:38

Poppy Pomfrey is the school nurse in Harry Potter!

It's lovely.

Escolar · 21/11/2018 12:38

Poppy is a lovely name and not too cutesy IMO. I also really like Jessica / Jess.

beefchowmein · 21/11/2018 12:40

It’s a popular name so will be seen as a perfectly normal ‘adult’ name in the future (not that it isn’t already)

californiascreaming · 21/11/2018 12:44

With cute names I think it's fine to not want to name your own child if you have that opinion. But I think it's crazy to perpetuate some kind of notion that a name will hold her back - it's a families attitude to success, overcoming difficulties and dealing with shit that will determine her future not her name.
If you like it use it, if not sure keep searching those lists till you are happy...

JemSynergy · 21/11/2018 12:47

I have an 8 year old Poppy also born in November, you'll find there are loads of Poppy's born in November. It actually wasn't why I named my DD Poppy I had just loved the name for years. She was also very nearly an Amelia which would just not have suited her at all now. She has never ever been referred to a Poopy by anyone at school or by her friends. We gave her two very strong middle names. I do think that Jessica flows better with Elizabeth though.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 21/11/2018 12:53

Too twee and cutesy for me. Sorry OP. I can’t imagine an adult called Poppy and I would hate to be an adult with that kind of name. Same applies to Posy, Daisy, etc. But having said that, there are so many little Poppys now that when she grows up it will seem a very normal.

Love Pippa.

small2018 · 21/11/2018 12:55

I really like Poppy!

Posy is awful!!!

rainbowstardrops · 21/11/2018 13:22

I really like Poppy! Go for it if you love it

BatF1nk · 21/11/2018 13:28

I get this all the time but from a boy perspective! I have a Teddy. Not an Edward or a Theodore - Teddy on the birth certificate

He's now 12. And not once ever has anyone made any reference to his name being cutesy. People 'become' their names and it's as simple as that

I've asked him if he prefers Teddy or Ted (he gets called both) and it's always Teddy. Oh and not one child has ever called him Teddy Bear - I do though Grin

Just go with the name you love.

KaroB · 21/11/2018 13:30

I once knew and admired an adult Poppy. She was cool and successful.

Rubaloo · 21/11/2018 14:03

TreadSoftly that’s something I thought - Elizabeth seems much more sensible and Poppy more frivolous.

Twatforahat I’m not bothered about it being a flower name. I really want something classic and timeless but DH and I weren’t agreeing on anything.

Thank you for all the posts. I’ve never met a Poppy so it’s been helpful to see all the comments. I do love the name but am thinking that if I’m so undecided perhaps it’s not the right one.

It's too cutesy for my taste but when she is an adult there will be loads of adult poppy's. It's very popular in my area, I know quite a few whereas I know no Jessica's under the age of 5. It is also exceptionally popular for dogs.

lebkuchenlover · 21/11/2018 14:29

Cute for a girl dog!

halfwitpicker · 21/11/2018 14:32

Yeah... On a toddler, fine. Walking into the boardroom, not so much.

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 21/11/2018 14:37

I like Poppy and don't find it cutesy like Alfie or Betsy. It's also much less commonly found than Lily and Daisy.

Jessica is v dull IMO.

Are you open to other ideas?

sunshineandshowers21 · 21/11/2018 14:37

we used poppy as an extra middle name because our daughter was born on remembrance day. we wouldn’t have used it as a first name, purely because it is a very common name for little girls where we live.

lebkuchenlover · 21/11/2018 14:37

Poppy also doesn't travel well into other languages!

Elizabeth is a lovely name (and works well in most languages)
