Are these names too similar?

I have an Eliza already. Could we also have an Edith? Edie for short?

Not ideally, but ok if you can’t think of another.

Honeybee79 · 14/11/2018 20:08

We have a shortlist but Edith is currently the favourite! Others are Nina, Niamh and Iris.

I don't think they are at all similar, so no problem using them for sisters.

I actually really like Nina with Eliza.

Honeybee79 · 14/11/2018 20:14

We sometimes shorten to Eliza to Liza, which lessens the issue a bit.

I think it’s fine.
They are sisters, their names are individual, they don’t need to match, or ‘go’ with each other. Both nice names.
I do like Nina though.

clary · 14/11/2018 20:15

Edith is just The Best name Grin

Also fine with Eliza

stellarfox · 14/11/2018 20:16

I think they are ok as siblings. They look similar written down but they don’t sound the same, especially if Edith will go by Edie

Honeybee79 · 14/11/2018 20:18

Yes, when they're older any similarity won't really be relevant, it's more that I don't particularly want to give them samey names. We have a son too but fortunately his name is an easy sound to avoid...

I know an Orla with a baby sister called Isla.
Yours are nowhere near as “samey” as that!

MommaB26 · 14/11/2018 20:40

Edith and Eliza are beautiful together Smile

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 14/11/2018 20:54

Just because 2 names begin with the same letter and have the same amount of letters doesn't mean they're similar.

Creepyexgirlfriend · 14/11/2018 21:19

Sound good together.

Sophronia · 14/11/2018 21:37

Yes, they’re nice together.

ChaosMoon · 15/11/2018 11:49

Not normally a fan of sibling names with the same initial. There's a first for everything though, and they are both such lovely names, which both sound very different. Just bear in mind that post will be a pain in the proverbial... Maybe different initials for middle names?

NonaGrey · 15/11/2018 11:54

The names are fine but as teenagers/young women you’ll have a number of years where letters for 2 Miss E Honeybee’s will come through the door and will get confused.

As an older teen I absolutely didn’t want my family members opening my mail.

Pemba · 15/11/2018 11:55

I don't think the two names are samey at all. And Edith starts with a long 'e', whereas Eliza doesn't. The only problem you might have is post arriving addressed to Miss E Whatever that might cause a little confusion when they're older.

But I do love Nina!

Honeybee79 · 15/11/2018 20:34

Yes, DH has pointed out the problem with the post, but they would definitely have different middle initials to try and avoid that!

I love Nina too. I think it will come down to Edith or Nina depending on what works when we meet her. Also love Niamh.

OP posts:
shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 15/11/2018 20:37

The E is really the only thing that makes the names similar so I don't see why not

Having said that IMHO Eliza is a far nicer name than Edith so little Edith my feel short changed later in life!

mintich · 15/11/2018 20:45

Love Edith and Niamh

TatianaLarina · 15/11/2018 23:24

Can’t stwnd Edith and yes it is a bit too samey.

Love Iris.

This just isn’t a thing. I have two now late-teen daughters with the same first initial, and every single letter they receive has their middle initial too. We’ve never had any confusion.

It’s always:
Miss EF Knight
Miss EH Knight

Bbcbbcbbc · 15/11/2018 23:48

I think Edith and Eliza are beautiful names and go together perfectly.

Whereas I hate Nina (and also think two names ending in ‘-a’ are actually more samey!)

Sessy19 · 16/11/2018 06:44

The pronunciation of the E is a totally different sound in each name, it’s possible that they just look similar?
Cute names

MikeUniformMike · 16/11/2018 07:16

They are quite different. Will teenagers get much post in the 2020s?

AdoreTheBeach · 16/11/2018 07:26

I think you’ll be fine. Eliza will likely be Liza or Liz and you’re already planning to use Edie for Edith (if it were the case of worrying about two E names)

In any case, Edith and Eliza do not sound like similar names so go for it. I have a friend whose name begins with L, as do all 4 of her sisters. No one confused their names. Now me, I sometimes call my daughter my dogs name and vice versa and they don’t sound anything similar (plus traditional girl name vs traditional boy name) 🤷🏼‍♀️
