Sylvie
Sylvia

Not Silvia.

insanitypack · 12/11/2018 13:41

Silvia is the Roman spelling and actually closer to the Latin from whence it came!

It's my nans name and everyone calls her Sylv. I can't imagine a baby being called it it seems so old

InProgress · 12/11/2018 13:51

My dyslexic brain read Silvia as sliver. For that reason alone I'd go with Sylvia or Sylvie.

FogCutter · 12/11/2018 13:54

Sylvie.

Sylvia is just too granny for me and I read Silvia as sliver Blush

Talith · 12/11/2018 13:55

Ooo I've been waiting for Sylvia to one back in. I love it! Shame I'm past any more babies now!

sylviec · 12/11/2018 13:56

Sylvia as proper name and then I'd definitely call her Sylv/Sylvie as a nickname.

It's pretty when you look at the name objectively I think

statetrooperstacey · 12/11/2018 13:56

Love this name, any of them op .

Sophronia · 12/11/2018 14:04

Sylvia

daisypond · 12/11/2018 14:06

I think they're all fine, though I'm not keen on Sylvie - too fey.

MLP79 · 12/11/2018 14:07

Sylvie. Cute as a button.

pallisers · 12/11/2018 14:19

Sylvia. Dd (age 17) has a friend with this name and it is lovely. Classic but rare/

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 12/11/2018 14:20

It's a very old lady name. And so is Sylvie.

sylviec · 12/11/2018 14:21

Being an old lady name doesn't matter at all. A baby isn't an old lady. Old ladies were not always old ladies either!

LeeMiller · 12/11/2018 14:24

Sylvia.

Sylvie is nice as a nn for Sylvia, as a full name I agree with the poster who said it's fey.

Silvia is fine if you're Italian, otherwise it's a bit random when the pronunciation is the same. Also, it reminds me of Berlusconi.

sylviec · 12/11/2018 14:58

What does 'fey' mean?

BackforGood · 12/11/2018 15:12

Sylvia

SallyWD · 12/11/2018 16:46

Sylvia is such a beautiful name

stellarfox · 12/11/2018 18:02

I love Sylvie

IsabelleSE19 · 12/11/2018 18:09

Slight bias as it's my DD's name, but I love it and am still so pleased we chose it! It's a name everyone is familiar with but is still very unusual (except in France where Sylvie is the name of everybody's mother/auntie/cousin!). She is Sylvie most of the time although her name is Sylvia (I wanted to make sure I could claim she was named after the suffragette!). The sound of the name sounds so beautiful to me, like Silvery (as a pp sort of said).

Surprised it's not making more of a comeback tbh, like Ivy, Elsie etc.

newrubylane · 15/11/2018 15:41

The baby name book I read recently suggested that Silvia is the original spelling, but Sylvia is more common now. I was discussing the name with my mum (I love it but OH has already vetoed Sad) and she said she preferred Sylvie. All lovely though.

RavenWings · 15/11/2018 17:01

Silvia. Sylvia doesn't appeal to me (bit granny imo) and I'm not keen on Sylvie for an adult. I'm not keen on a lot of ie names as I think they can be infantilising and cutesy, and Sylvie falls into that bracket for me. It's a pretty nickname though.

pilates · 15/11/2018 17:04

Sylvie

seeingdots · 15/11/2018 17:12

Sylvie.

Accountant222 · 15/11/2018 17:21

A girl at our school was called Silvana, lovely name and I've never heard of another
