Prefer Sylvie.

I really like the original spelling of Silvia but wouldn't Silvie work as the NN

Astronica · 16/11/2018 10:32

Definitely Sylvie. This is so cool and appealing. It also doesn't need to be a nickname for something else, which only takes away from it I think - it is a name in it's own right.

WowserBowser · 16/11/2018 15:11

Sylvia

I love Sylvia!
Definitely time it came back.

Crystalblue13 · 16/11/2018 16:06

Sylvia is my grandma’s name too. I like Sylvie

SubtitlesOn · 16/11/2018 16:10

Silvia is quite common in Italy - with this spelling

My DB has several in his new wife's family and friends

Sort of their version of Sophie

SubtitlesOn · 16/11/2018 16:14

I mean the number of younger people called Silvia in Italy is as common as young people in uk called Sophie

Not that Silvia is an Italian version of Sophie iyswim

I don't really get how people are calling Sylvia a 'granny' name, and yet are happy to give their children names such as Florence, Elsie, Wilfred, Arthur etc. - far more 'old people' names if you ask me and unattractive.

Sylvia, OK it was popular pre-war, but it is a classic, features in poetry etc. Then there's Sylvia Plath. It's lovely, as are Silvia and Sylvie. French people think of Sylvie as middle-aged though apparently.

Oh, they're all ugly, dated names to me too! Although Arthur is a bit better than the rest. MN is not a hivemind.

ChippyMinton · 16/11/2018 19:35

Silvie

greencatbluecat · 17/11/2018 11:30

Not Silvia because it looks like a misspelling.
