Boy names - 1970s or too old man?!

StuckonBoyNames · 11/11/2018 17:30

Help, DH and I are expecting and cannot agree on a boy name AT ALL.

He likes names like:
Simon
Robert
Gregory
Steven
Peter
I think these are very 1970s names but he thinks they are classic?

On the other hand I like names like
Alfred (Fred)
Oliver
Albert
Rupert
Henry/Harry
Frank(ie?)/Franklin
Percy
Theodore
Wilfred (Fred...again!)
He says these are old man names...even when I told him some of them are in the top 10 now!! Confused

Do what do people think would any of these work?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
OhTheRoses · 11/11/2018 19:43

Are Julian, Jeremy, Timothy due a revival.

Arthur?
Dylan?
John?
Mark?

daisypond · 11/11/2018 19:55

Stephen is the more classic, traditional spelling. Steven is a more phonetic, anglicised spelling.
Robert and Rupert are forms of the same name, if that helps. Rupert is the Scottish form of the English Robert, I think.
I don't really see Peter and Simon as biblical names per se. I would say names like Isaac and Noah that are popular now are much more biblical.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 11/11/2018 19:59

I also like your husbands list, apart from Steven, which I dislike.
From your list, I like Harry.

ShackUp · 11/11/2018 20:02

I have an Alfred and Albert: Fred and Bert. People always say lovely things about their names, and they're European, too, if you add an -o on the end

drquin · 11/11/2018 20:10

But surely every name is "dated" in its own way ....... naming seems almost cyclical.

Who says Colin and Gary won't be the next popular names?
Literally, who decides this.

Pick the name(s) you both like. Don't categorise them as trendy, dated, 70s or whatever.
I love that Christine & Frank Lampard called their little girl Patricia. Admittedly, it's his late mother's name .... but I doubt there's dozens of other Patricia's born this year.

PumpkinsMum18 · 11/11/2018 20:14

I quite like old names for boys!

We’re not expecting yet but myself and my husband have discussed potential names. I would like to name my son Bryan but it got shot down ☹️

MemoryOfSleep · 11/11/2018 20:17

I disagree, I have met a Simon, a Peter and a Gregory, currently all in their twenties. I think your names are generally old man-ish, although popular currently, and will date quickly.

TatianaLarina · 11/11/2018 20:17

I think your DH’s are classics, but slightly boring classics. Yours will date far more.

Out of the two lists I like:

Robert, Gregory and Henry.

I like Theodore too but there are so many right now it will date.

LKRJM · 11/11/2018 20:18

*I like Peter - it just looks like a horrible name rather that sounds it - I see people modernising it, spelling is Peta.

Peta is a girl's name.*

Peta can be both masculine and feminine.

Moominfan · 11/11/2018 20:19

Peter is lovely but only cause the one I know is adorable

What about?
Harry
George
William
Ralph
Emmett
Tate
Julian

Sophronia · 11/11/2018 20:20

I prefer your DH’s list. Yours are quite trendy and will date.

AJPTaylor · 11/11/2018 20:20

Andrew
Mark

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 11/11/2018 20:23

I prefer your dh's choices to most of yours, tbh (not keen on Gregory, though, and think Steven should be spelt Stephen). Simon, Robert, Stephen and Peter are old, classic names that just happened to be popular in the 70s. The only one of yours I really like is Theodore. Henry and Oliver are OK. Rupert and Percy are in the 'just no' category.

Skyejuly · 11/11/2018 20:23

I love your DHs choices. I like Peter.

mikado1 · 11/11/2018 20:26

I like Robert, Peter and Stephen plus most of your names. Boys' names are hard! How about you meet in the middle with more classic/ageless names?

MerryMarigold · 11/11/2018 20:27

How about Christopher abb. Kit?

mikado1 · 11/11/2018 20:27

Haha, Christopher was the type of thing I had in mind Marigold!

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 11/11/2018 20:33

I like your DH’s names better than your picks. sorry! And Percy and Rupert are drippy and awful.

Pompom42 · 11/11/2018 20:33

DH names are all awful. Peter would be the only likeable one. Like 80% of yours, I really like Frank and always have done.
Fred is good too

witherwings · 11/11/2018 20:58

Some of his are very 70s and dated, most of yours are overly trendy right now so very popular.
The best of the bunch IMO are;
Gregory
Peter
Oliver
Henry/Harry

But, it's your choice that counts so who cares what anyone else thinks as long as you and OH agree.

Skyejuly · 11/11/2018 21:15

What about...
Carl
Justin
Thomas
Ryan
Daniel
Gavin
Nicholas
Nathan
Like
Timothy
Matthew
Joshua
David
Paul
Duncan

MrJellyBean · 11/11/2018 21:24

Peter and Robert are lovely names

StuckonBoyNames · 11/11/2018 21:25

It seems we have very much divided opinion here Grin

I don't want to choose a name which will be very much of late 2010s (I have a name very much of my birth decade and went to school with a lot of people with the same name as me) so maybe something classic would be better.

We dont want to use Christopher, between us we know over 20 so feel it is overused (perhaps not in new babies but in people of our age)

We have had a talk and these are the names we have narrowed it down to (plus a couple of new ones)

Robert/Rupert
Gregory
William/Wilfred/just Wilf/just Will???
Fred (but dislike Freddie)
Peter
Andrew/Andy
Percy (too "drippy"/"just no" as some posters have said??)
Theodore or just Teddy

We don't care what other people think exactly but we don't want to give him a name where people will screw their face up when he introduces himself for the next 30 years Grin

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 11/11/2018 21:34

My choices from your revised list:

William
Fred (but Frederick on the birth cert)
Peter

MerryMarigold, I heartily dislike Kit (and find it achingly trendy atm), but I am very grateful to you for using 'abb.' and not 'nn' Grin

mikado1 · 11/11/2018 21:37

Robert and Will are lovely and timeless imo. Teddy is too trendy I think.
