Jonah or Alfie?

Hi everyone,

Just needs some advice, we have a beautiful daughter and are expecting a little boy soon, our daughter was so easy to name but DH and I have been through thousands of names and don't agree on any.

We seem to be down to Alfie or Jonah, but I am unsure about them both, Alfie as I don't like the name 'Alf' and don't want it ever shortened to that but I know that it probably will, and Jonah sounds very religious to me and will be shorted to Jo or Jon both names which I don't like.

Opinions would be really appreciated.

Also any name suggestions along these lines will also be welcome, we need 2 syllable names as have a long surname that can be shorted to something nice or not shortened at all.

Thank you in advance

xx

I love Jonah, not keen on Alfie personally.

Jonah

Jonah will probably get shortened to Joe by some people. I like both of them (and Alf and Joe).

Cosmoa · 10/11/2018 18:49

I love Jonah and don't reckon it'll get shortened to anything..

daisypond · 10/11/2018 19:19

I'm not keen on either, I'm afraid. Alfie is too cutesy and babyish and Jonah is just a normal word that means a jinx or bad luck- from the Old Testament story, so that would seriously put me off.
If it was Alfred or John or Joseph, I like those much, much more.
How about Josiah?

jenniuol · 10/11/2018 19:23

Jonah.

Didyeeaye · 10/11/2018 19:24

I like Jonah best. If you are wanting Alfie but not Alf would you name him Alfred nn. Alfie?
Other suggestions:
Elijah
Zachary
Reece
Ryan
Niall
Liam
Noah
Riley
Henry
Damon

I love Jonah. Alfie's nice too, but there seems to be quite a few Alfie's.

hungryhippie · 10/11/2018 19:40

Not too keen on either but prefer Jonah from the two.
Too many biblical connotations for Jonah and Alfie is done to death.

Alfie190 · 10/11/2018 19:47

I think of Alfie as a dogs name, indeed my user name is a tribute to my dog.

I don't particularly like Jonah either though.

Glumglowworm · 10/11/2018 19:51

Jonah

finallychangedmyusername · 10/11/2018 19:53

I love Jonah.

lebkuchenlover · 10/11/2018 20:53

Jonah means 'bringer of bad luck'! I wouldn't name my son this.

Alfie is ok but a little faddy

lululoveslemons · 10/11/2018 20:55

I prefer Alfie. I wouldn't worry about when people say about names being nicknames - lots the top 20 names are shortened versions of longer / traditional names these days. By the time your babies generation are adults these names will be totally normal

ThisMustBeMyDream · 10/11/2018 20:58

My son is Jonah. He is 3. He has never had his name shortened.

I don't think it's particularly likely to be shortened. No one has ever asked me "is he Jonah known as Joe" or anything like that.

RLOU30 · 10/11/2018 21:01

I was going to call my new son Jonah and still absolutely love it. What put me off is all the people saying it means bad luck because of the story of Jonah and the whale. I wish I ignored those people.

Pinkgin50 · 10/11/2018 21:01

Jonah

Stircrazy1984 · 10/11/2018 22:36

Thank you everyone, I appreciate the feedback.

We're not religious at all, so I guess we could claim ignorance with the whole religious meaning behind Jonah?!

Sounds like it's the favourite out of the two.

How about Jonas? Very similar to Jonah but it doesn’t sound just as biblical and has a nicer meaning (dove/peace). I think it’s a lovely name.

Astronica · 12/11/2018 12:49

I'm going to disagree with most and much prefer Alfie. I find names like Jonah quite heavy and religious. I much prefer the more unusual Joash for an Old Testament Jo name, and the more mainstream Joseph is preferable to me too.

I prefer Archie and Alby/Albie over Alfie, but still find Alfie to be a friendly and affable name.

Nacmonalds · 12/11/2018 14:35

Definitely Jonah.

Alfie is so overdone at this point and will date heavily. Plus it’s so nicknamey and childish - any time I try to imagine an adult called Alfie I always picture a man-child, a bit like Alfie Moon from Eastenders! Not very bright, not very likely to enter a professional career.

deptfordgirl · 12/11/2018 15:08

Jonah is gorgeous.
