Just Maddie?

Hello! (:

Our daughter is 4 weeks old!

We are really struggling to name her. The only name we love is Maddie. We're really not keen on the longer versions.

Can we name her just Maddie?

Thanks x

I think Maddie is sweet for a kid but not great for very professional situations when she's older. Can you think of a judge called Maddie, a surgeon etc etc. I always think it's best to give the option of a formal name like Madeleine.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 05/11/2018 16:22

I would personally use Madeleine or Maddison for reasons the previous poster mentioned but she is your baby and if you want to just call her Maddie then that’s up to you. It’s a lovely name.

MontyPants · 05/11/2018 16:25

The name just reminds me of the awful disappearance of Madeline McCann. But I like the suggestion upthread of Madison as a full name on the birth certificate, and Maddie as a given name.

lovelyupnorth · 05/11/2018 16:32

Madison is from a crap movie.

and would agree that as an adult Maddie is a bit childish

our DD is Madeleine - but know as Maddy / Mads can always opt themselves for the full verision

BlueWillowTree · 05/11/2018 16:41

It's so hard. I just can't imagine calling her Madison or Madeleine!

We do like Grace, but after looking at other threads/the internet, it seems that everyone else finds it overused and boring, eeek!

I think Grace is gorgeous!

Fruitcake13 · 05/11/2018 17:01

I think it's lovely and would suit an adult or child.
Not keen on Madison but Madeleine is beautiful if you feel the need to have a full name.

Good luck at deciding :)

"Can't imagine ever calling her Madison or Madeleine."

Well you don't have to. My nephew is Richard on his BC. However he's only ever been known as Richie.

PuppyMonkey · 05/11/2018 17:24

I’ve got a DD called Maddie who is officially Madeleine. She’s nearly 22 and never uses her full name on anything. She’s not a high court judge or a surgeon, but she is running her own business. So I’d say if you really like the name Maddie just call her Maddie and she may still become a high court judge, who bloody knows? Grin

As it happens I love both Maddie and Madeleine so I wasn’t that fussed what she ended up being.

BeckyG86 · 05/11/2018 17:36

I like Maddie. I think it can be hard to find a name these days that suits children and adults, and then thinking of what would suit an elderly person. I know someone who goes by the name Maddy but I think her name is Madeline, and she only gets called Maddy (her partner may call her Mad), but never anything like Madeline. She is in her 50’s now. If you like Maddie and you think it suits her then call her Maddie.

Congratulations! I bet those 4 weeks have gone so quickly!

Another2day · 05/11/2018 18:14

I don't like Maddie, it sounds like someone mad!

Madeleine, especially the French pronunciation, is beautiful.

Canadalife · 05/11/2018 18:37

We have a lovely 19 year old Maddy. Officially Madeleine....but Maddy on everything except passport etc. She is called Mads by us....but I think of it as more of a scandi vibe that a referral to her MH. We dithering over her name because we have an elderly relative call Maddy and did not want to get everyone muddled...but after trying for nearly 3 weeks to call our baby something else we went with Maddy. We tried all sort of names. I remember holding her and calling her Ellie....but she just was a Maddy. Good luck with your decision...

AtticaRose · 05/11/2018 19:23

If you like Maddie, just go with it.

There are other possible long forms, though some are a bit of a stretch.

Varients of Madeleine, like Magdalena, Madalena
Matilda
Madhuri (I know one!)

Cosmoa · 05/11/2018 19:31

I know/have met loads of adult Maddie's and I only know one of their full length names.. Madita.

I think just Maddie is fine.

daisypond · 05/11/2018 19:35

I wouldn't. It sounds like someone mad. Fine if you choose that diminutive yourself as an adult, but not if it's foisted on you by your parents. I love Madeleine, and I really like Grace as well.

LeeMiller · 05/11/2018 19:40

I'd use the long name on the birth certificate, you don't have to use it but it gives her a voice when she's older. My family have never called me by my full name but I have used it professionally and abroad, where it works better than the diminutive.

I also think of Maddie McCann but it's still a lovely name, as is Madeleine. Grace is nice too.

Pemba · 05/11/2018 20:10

Give her the full name - Madeleine Grace, called Maddie by family and friends - it's beautiful.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 05/11/2018 20:13

Madeleine is gorgeous. Not keen on Maddie.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/11/2018 20:18

I know a doctor called Maddie. It’s fine and am sure it would be fine for a judge too.

Polkasq · 05/11/2018 20:34

I prefer longer names as the full name, but Maddie would be fine as a stand-alone name. Lots of "ie" shortened names are used as complete names at the moment... Charlie, Alfie, Freddie, Archie, Evie, Katie, Tilly, Milly etc.

Madora
Madelina
Magdalena
Mandisa
Miranda

JeanPagett · 05/11/2018 21:13

Oh don't get me wrong, I think you can be a judge or a doctor called whatever the hell you like. I just think it's a useful way of thinking about how a name that's cute in a child may seem informal/cutesy in an adult.

Petitepamplemousse · 05/11/2018 21:49

Why would you do that when Madeleine is beautiful, classic French name and gives her a more mature option? Maddie is not nice as a standalone name.

BlueWillowTree · 05/11/2018 22:30

Because we have different preferences? (: I don't love Madeleine, but I want to love the name we give our daughter!

I do also think your DD would spend her school years correcting teachers who assume Maddie is short for something.
