Just Maddie?

Hello! (:

Our daughter is 4 weeks old!

We are really struggling to name her. The only name we love is Maddie. We're really not keen on the longer versions.

Can we name her just Maddie?

Thanks x

I do also think your DD would spend her school years correcting teachers who assume Maddie is short for something.

I don't get this. They might ask if it's short for anything but they're not going to randomly assume and call her something else - especially if she's registered as Maddie.

I think it's fine. I don't really get using a longer form of a name when you only like the shorter version.

There's a Charlie in my DS's class who has full on arguments with teachers on a regular basis because they insist on calling him Charles (mostly when telling him off )

RoomWithALoon · 06/11/2018 14:10

Hmm. I stand corrected. What an odd thing to do if they're "Charlie" on your register!

SingingSands · 06/11/2018 14:13

Of course you can! She's your little Maddie so go with it.

I know a Maddie and a Madi.

Some very stuffy responses here about names having to sound "professional". Such nonsense.

JeanPagett · 06/11/2018 14:16

I don't think names have to sound professional, it's just nice for kids to have that option as they get older.

Nearthebig40 · 06/11/2018 14:25

I work with an adult, very senior professional Maddie. Never crossed my mind that it’s not a name for a grown up work place!

Another2day · 06/11/2018 15:06

I would definitely assume that Charlie, Steve, Mike, Maddie and Ellie we're short for Charles, Stephen, Michael, Madeleine and Eleanor.

I struggle to understand how you can like a short form of a name but not the original long form...?!

Another2day · 06/11/2018 15:07

Also, Maddy sounds like Mad!

fuckitbuckit · 06/11/2018 16:10

Maddie is lovely and doesn't need to be short for anything.

Also your name doesn't dictate what job you can have so if she wanted too she could be a surgeon. I hardly thing a future patient is going to turn her down because her full name isn't Madeline.

Applepiecake · 06/11/2018 21:43

I much prefer Madeline (in English) or Madeleine (in French).

Didyeeaye · 06/11/2018 21:51

I dont like it. In scotland we often call people 'Maddies'
Its a playful way of saying Looney

hulabaloo · 06/11/2018 21:56

I'm not keen on the MAD part of Maddy.

minimausi · 07/11/2018 12:57

You can call your dd whatever you want, but I personally would prefer to have the longer version as an option. Madeline is lovely (pronounced Madelyne)

DuckofDoom · 07/11/2018 20:26

I’m just-something which is a common enough nickname but very rarely used as a stand-alone name. Say Vicky instead of Victoria.

It absolutely has not done me an ounce of harm. I’ve had a very professional career and now I’m doing a PhD. My name definitely wouldn’t pass the High Court judge test but I’ve done alright.

The only thing annoying is when people assume it’s ‘Victoria’ when I’m signing work contracts or applying for finance, that kind of thing. But it only takes a quick explanation.

I actually really like being ‘Just-Vicky’ and wouldn’t want the long version. If you only want Maddie, then go for it!

anniehm · 07/11/2018 20:49

I would always suggest a full name - that cute baby will grow up and needs a professional name on their cv. I call my dd by her shortened name always but at work she uses her full name

NOTthepinkranger · 07/11/2018 20:55

Maddie is fine, I’m sure some people live under a rock. I know an SpR called ‘Tiff’ I think people assume it’s Tiffany but it’s not her name is Tiff, there’s another doctor called princess. I also know a lad who is studying to become a barrister he is just Gav not Gavin.

Lots of professionals will have unusual and shortened names in the future.
