Classic or hormones?

It's clunky but Tamsin or Tasmin are nice

QuaterMiss · 03/11/2018 05:44

Wonderful, elegant, serious, proper name!

Can't think of any likely shortenings that aren't pretty - but will really come into its own as she grows up. Impossible not to become a prize winning novelist, revolutionary orchestra conductor or director of a global institute for doing good with a name like that.

LeeMiller · 03/11/2018 07:04

It's not classic like Thomas or Josephine.

I find it frilly and a bit of a mouthful, like Georgiana, and I think of it primarily as a cat's name, I don't hate it though.

17caterpillars1mouse · 03/11/2018 07:19

I love it, an obviously underappreciated classical name.

I like that it can be shortened to Tamsin too

redexpat · 03/11/2018 07:20

Whats the Tom Stoppard play with a Thomasina? Shes very good at maths and has a tutor called Septimus. Arcadia! Just came to me.

Novemberrun · 03/11/2018 07:27

It's horrible and sounds made up!!

TatianaLarina · 03/11/2018 07:37

Very pretty. I know a Thomasina - she’s very glam.

Be aware that some posters on here are very narrow and conservative. They tend to reject things that sound unfamiliar.

wizzler · 03/11/2018 07:42

I quite like it. Thought immediately of Return of the Native which I love.

If you have a dd, you still like the name I say go for it

Allycumpooster · 03/11/2018 07:44

I have one of the alternative names mentioned upthread. I much prefer my name.
I have known two ladies called Thomasina, one shortened it to Tamsy. For my the name is just a bit long and clunky.

OrdinaryGirl · 03/11/2018 07:50

As per previous posters, there's something that just sticks in my craw about a girl's name that is just a bloke's name with a feminine bolt-on (á la Nigella, Horatia, Thomasina)
It sort of feeds into the idea (in many, many parts of the world) of a woman just being a sub-standard variant of a man.
There are loads of strong, magnificent names out there that don't fall into the 'male version of' category so for me personally, I would choose something else.

TatianaLarina · 03/11/2018 08:17

I don’t like male as female names but I don’t see the issue with names that have masculine and feminine versions.

What you see as a ‘bolt on’ is standard in other languages particularly those with grammatical genders.

Jean, Jeanne
Alexander, Alexandra
Peter/Petra
Michael/Michelle
Rafael, Rafaela
Claude/ius, Claudia
Anthony/Antoine, Antonia
Victor/Victoria
Tatius/Tatiana
Lucian/Lucia
Fabien/Fabienne

Classic and beautiful. There was a girl at my school called Thomasina and she was very beautiful and popular and a lovely person. She was Tommie at school to her friends. So much better than all of the Poppy, Evie, Sophie and other 'ee' ending names.

Everyoneiswingingit · 03/11/2018 08:51

Love it

Also love Nigella, Josephine, Claudia and Alexandra and as PP says, they are all feminine versions of masculine names. It's just that you don't hear Thomasina as often.

It's very feminine and pretty but carries some weight of tradition. Perfect.

harrietm87 · 03/11/2018 09:02

Fantastic name with great nickname potential

TroysMammy · 03/11/2018 09:06

Always makes me think of the film Three Lives of Thomasina a weepy about a cat.

EloisaJane · 03/11/2018 09:37

I love this. Such cool nn potential and sounds elegant.

Cosmoa · 03/11/2018 09:48

No no no

midsomermurderess · 03/11/2018 10:39

'Edwardian char lady names'😀🙀

2128Cl · 03/11/2018 23:28

It's fine. I had a friend named Thomasina when I was a child, I was kinda jealous of her name!

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 03/11/2018 23:29

It’s your hormones, don’t do it

winterhappiness · 05/11/2018 10:08

Absolutely love it. It's on my list. Nickname Tommy / Tommi/ or however else one would like it spelled

Racecardriver · 05/11/2018 10:13

Sorry that’s just horrid.

Bloominglovely · 05/11/2018 11:21

I really like it, I like Harriet too. In a million years, I would not name my child Daisy, Ellie, Holly, Millie or Tillie.

I think when asking random strangers for their opinions, it is a good idea to ask them what their own children are named (if they want to tell you) or what names they favour so you have some idea of their tastes. If you have opposite tastes, if they then dislike a certain name that you adore, it is more understandable than getting a reply saying ‘it is horrid’ which doesn’t help you.!

Another2day · 05/11/2018 13:58

I love it! Thomasina is beautiful, feminine and classic.

It makes such a refreshing change from all the cutesy names like Evie, Ellie, Poppy etc

liquidrevolution · 05/11/2018 14:01

will it be shortened in Ina ? I have an Ina Grin
