Isaac

I have a beautiful baby boy and he still has no name.

We like Isaac... I'm worried it's not a strong enough name (always wanted a strong name) and that it's maybe too popular?

Thoughts?

Isambard? Nice but bit game of thrones. I imagine him fighting with swords a lot.

KrakillBee · 30/10/2018 13:45

@cucumbergin I love Isambard. Makes me think of Brunel and I have some lovely memories of walking the suspension bridge in Bristol with my dad. I don't think I would be brave enough to use it though!

Brunel? That's strong and not too common!

naivetyisthenewblack · 30/10/2018 13:49

Issac's a great name!

If you don't like Zac though, he's bound to end up being called Zac as a teenager! Ask yourself if that's a problem for you?

What other names do you like?

KrakillBee · 30/10/2018 13:52

Do we really think it'd end up being shortened to Zac? I know a couple and they're 'eyes' and 'iz'

JheronimusBosch · 30/10/2018 13:56

I've only known two Isaacs old enough to have established shortenings, and neither used Zac. One was Ike, the other was just Isaac.

To me, Zac is not a logical leap.

MrsRubyMonday · 30/10/2018 13:57

I know an Isaac shortened to Izzy.

Rogueone · 30/10/2018 14:01

I know a few issacs. They are all known as Issac....nice name and solid

LightDrizzle · 30/10/2018 14:04

Both Isaacs I’ve known were Isaac. The only Zacs I’ve met were called Zachery or Zac.
I stress Isaac on the first syllable and have only heard others do so, so Zac didn’t occur to me as a short version.

OhTheTastyNuts · 30/10/2018 14:07

I have an Isaac. No one has ever called him Zac. We love the name!

GraceMarks · 30/10/2018 14:08

JheronimusBosch gah, yes, you're right of course. What I should have said is that the "Zac" sound is quite strong so it could suggest that nn. It might not end up that way, of course, and the OP could be insistent that her son is referred to by his full name, but by the time he's at school his friends might have other ideas about that.

gendercritter · 30/10/2018 14:25

I love Isaac! It's a serious name (in a good way).

peachgreen · 30/10/2018 14:37

I like Isaac and I don't think it would automatically be shortened to Zac.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/10/2018 14:42

I know a middle aged Isaac who has always been called Ike. Nice classic name.

LeeMiller · 30/10/2018 14:50

I think Isaac is strong-sounding, and the two I know are called 'eyes' never Zac.

KrakillBee · 30/10/2018 15:04

Ok you've NEARLY got me convinced...

OP posts:
sadsadsady · 30/10/2018 15:07

None of the Isaacs I know ever get called Zac.

naivetyisthenewblack · 30/10/2018 15:07

I think it's a low chance that any Isaac would be shortened to Zac - I was just thinking of sod's law!

It's probably be fine!

naivetyisthenewblack · 30/10/2018 15:09

Have you tried calling him Isaac?

When DD was born, we couldn't decide between 3 names so we spent a day each testing them out - only we didn't get to the third as the second one just seemed right.

Could you try calling him Isaac for a couple of days and seeing if it fits?

KrakillBee · 30/10/2018 15:16

@naivetyisthenewblack why didn't I think of that? It really does suit him. I also love that it means 'he who laughs'

I taught a naughty Isaac once so that puts me off lol but if you don’t want to shorten it to Zac, stamp that out early. Just say-no it’s Isaac and people will get the message. You obviously can’t control what he gets called in school or by friends but whilst he’s little you can pick your own diminutive. Hopefully if he’s never called Zac at home he won’t identify himself as being a ‘Zac’ anyway.

Shadow1234 · 30/10/2018 15:34

I think Isaac is a nice strong name, and dont know of any.

My son (17) has a friend called Ezra which I think is a lovely name as well (gets shortened to Ez)

Tragicroundabout · 30/10/2018 16:36

I love it - It's the name I really wanted to give ds2, but chickened out because there's already a famous Isaac with our surname and thought it would be a bit unfair to him......
Go for it!

Sophronia · 30/10/2018 22:57

I always thought the shortening was Ike.

Another2day · 31/10/2018 10:26

I agree and know an Isaac nicknamed Ike. It's the most natural shortening imo
