Looking for suggestions for astronomical names (linked with a mutual hobby between me and DH).

Currently we like but aren't sure of:

  • Luna
  • Nova
  • Atlas
  • Aries

Thoughts on these and any other suggestions? Thank youSmile

My daughters middle name is Soraya which is an ancient Persian word for the pleiades! I absolutely love it ❤️❤️❤️

Dandelion1980 · 21/10/2018 09:31

I wanted Carina (a constellation) but couldn’t get my husband to agree to it!

Cosmoa · 21/10/2018 09:32

The reason we didn't go for Soraya as a first name was because we like the pronunciation So-ray-ah rather than So-rye-ah. That and we love out chosen first name that little bit more. But I call her by her first and second name all the time and it also gets abbreviated to Raya or Raya Sunshine 😍

In my teens I knew sisters called Mars and Aura. Always thought that was very cool.

Don't forget all the amazing astronomers! It sounds like you're looking for girls' names so don't forget Jocelyn (Bell), Caroline (Herschel) etc or astronauts like Mae (Jamison) etc. Or there's Astra/ Astrid (per ardua ad astra).

Some Norse names (popular in the north of Scotland): Solveig and Astrid

userabcname · 21/10/2018 09:52

I love Atlas! Posted on here about it once but got a resounding "no way!" from mn...might still go for it if I ever have another boy though. I also like Luna - it was on our shortlist for a girl when I had DS. I actually like Aries and Nova too. Also was a fan of Orion but too similar to DH's name for us to use.

Atlas isn't astronomical

I thought he was Titan of astronomy and carried the celestial spheres?

DianaBlythe · 21/10/2018 10:09

Andromeda - Anna for short if you like.
Stella is Latin for star

My bad.

Atlas and his brother Menoetius sided with the Titans in their war against the Olympians, the Titanomachy. When the Titans were defeated, many of them (including Menoetius) were confined to Tartarus, but Zeus condemned Atlas to stand at the western edge of Gaia (the Earth) and hold up the sky on his shoulders.

If you look up Atlas on Wikipedia he gave his children really cool names!
