Struggling to make a decision for DS2.

Any thoughts (positive/negative) on:

Iolo
Ianto
Iestyn
Guto
Gruff/Gruffyn/Gruffydd

Or any other similar names we might like?

Iolo - yes but will get Yo-low pronunciation. Like it a lot.
Ianto - great
Iestyn - fine
Guto - politician Guto Bebb gets his name said correctly on R4 but might get said a Gut-Oh or Ghee-toe
Gruff/Gruffyn/Gruffydd. Gruffydd is fine, shorten it to Griff. Gruffyn - no, sorry, spell it Griffin.

Ianto is lovely! Along with Iestyn, it's my favourite Welsh boy's name. I've not come across any of either recently, however. Idris is quite popular at the moment, and I know babies called Emyr, Gruff and Steffan.

welshweasel · 17/10/2018 20:35

I love Idris but DH has vetoed it on account of knowing a very nasty one when he was younger! The current bump is therefore called Idris.

We have a Gruffydd, he's 3 and totally suits his name. We call him Gruff, Gruffy, Gruffster, Gruff the wiff, Gruffy-roo and sausage.

We've also got a Tomos.
We did consider
Idris,
Iestyn,
Ifor,
Ieuan,
Gethin,
Bryn,
Macsen,
Madoc,
Huw

zucchinieggplant · 17/10/2018 20:49

Emrys and Rhys were on my list, but had a DD!

Watto1 · 17/10/2018 20:52

I wanted DS to be Aled but dh vetoed itSad. Gruff is lovely but you will get people mispronouncing it . Ditto Guto. Love Iolo.

Coolaschmoola · 17/10/2018 20:56

Iestyn is my favourite. I also love Rhydian.

Sophronia · 17/10/2018 21:02

Iestyn is my favourite.

GoJohnnyGoGoGoGo · 17/10/2018 21:06

Regarding Gruffydd and pronunciation. We live in S.Wales and my family mostly live in England and they can all say his name without an issue. You get a few people who call him Gruff, as in billy goat rather than 'Griff'. Once I correct them they get it. Occasionally you get a painful look from a receptionist who doesn't know how to say it. He's been called gruff-ff-ood a handful of times. But, honestly it's fine.

bakingcupcakes · 17/10/2018 21:11

My favourite Welsh boys name is Ieuan. I didn't use it because we were moving to England and I didn't think anyone would be able to say it or spell it. I like Iestyn too.

welshweasel · 17/10/2018 21:56

I love Ieuan too but one of my friends has used it recently.

I don’t worry about pronounciation too much. We already have a Taliesin, which no one seems to struggle with after they’ve heard it once.

Justlikedevon · 17/10/2018 22:20

Like them all, though they will get mangled by many. Guto doesn't travel well.
I also really like Iorwerth.

AlliKaneErikson · 17/10/2018 23:27

Tomos and Harri- although they may be too similar to the English equivalents.
I like Macsen, Steffan and Rhys.

TinDogTavern · 17/10/2018 23:30

Love a lot on this list and also:

Gareth
Brychan
Elis
Dylan

dragonsteeth · 17/10/2018 23:30

Ianto is a fabulous name.

ChaosMoon · 18/10/2018 15:07

I love all of these and a few are on my list. If you like Idris but it has negative connotations for DH, how about Emrys? It means immortal. I also love Emlyn.

Wait4nothing · 18/10/2018 15:10

I loved Ianto (but we live in England) and Ieuan (but too many in family).
Went for Tomos
Also like: Gethin and Trystan

welshweasel · 18/10/2018 17:34

Tomos would give us the very Welsh name of Tomos Thomas Grin

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2018 19:32

Tomos Thomas is perfect.

soundsystem · 18/10/2018 19:54

Ah I was about to suggest Taliesin then I saw your update!

I like Iolo best from your list (although they're all lovely)

welshweasel · 18/10/2018 20:08

@mikeuniformmike it’s a definite contender!

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2018 20:10

Yay!
Not keen on Ianto Thomas. Guto Thomas is ok.

MikeUniformMike · 18/10/2018 20:14

I don't normally suggest it, but have you considered Dylan?
Gwen could be a sister.

TroysMammy · 18/10/2018 20:15

Rhodri
Gethin
Geraint
Sion
Dafydd
Dewi
Ioan
Llyr

rebelrosie12 · 18/10/2018 20:16
