What are your thoughts on the name Sophie? Would you use a name you liked despite it’s popularity?

I love Sophie, would have been top of my girls name list if a family member hadn't used it first!

percheron67 · 18/10/2018 14:24

Lovely elegant name.

Rebecca36 · 18/10/2018 14:37

I think Sophie is a lovely, very feminine, name. Fine if you don't mind giving your daughter a feminine name which, if Mumsnet is anything to go by, is not so much the thing nowadays. I would like it though so if you do, go ahead.

(I had a little cat called Sophie, a more feminine cat you could not find, she was gorgeous. RIP Sophie.)

giveovermypreciousss · 18/10/2018 15:21

My dd is a Sophie. Shes the only one in her year group. There is one Sophia as well.
Im surprised at the responses tbh. Its clearly a marmite name, either love or hate it. But I probably wouldnt like the Sophie haters name choices either.

Wobblebeans · 19/10/2018 16:57

DD3 is a sophie, there's only one other in her school. We tried Sophia for a day but it didn't suit her, much prefer Sophie.

Sessy19 · 19/10/2018 17:17

It was a very popular name when I was at school...I know over 10 (I’m 36), and it’s my sister’s name. All the Sophies I know, bar none, have been primadonna nightmares!! 😂😂
But it’s a pretty name on paper, I can see why it has worldwide popularity

CatsEye99 · 19/10/2018 18:45

Its a lovely name.

For the people saying it's boring - I personally like to give my children names they can make their own. They can put their own personality to their name rather than having to live up to being called something that already has it's own connotations. Assuming someone is boring because they prefer something understated is a bit rude in my view.

holasoydora · 19/10/2018 18:52

I agree CatsEye.

I gave my DD a mumsnet rated boring, understated name (purposely) and she is anything but. Also a girl in her class with an 'interesting' name told me she wished she had my DD's name!

CatsEye99 · 19/10/2018 19:01

Hola mine have "sensible" classic names that I think some might find boring. My reasoning is I'm naming a human who will want to be taken seriously and not judged on their name. So we deliberately chose names that could be any age and didn't give away anything

holasoydora · 19/10/2018 19:07

We did that too Cats. My DD and DS's names were once cited on here as an example of boring sibling names Grin

I love classic names though. I have a new pair ready for my imaginary third...

YerAuntFanny · 19/10/2018 19:14

I like it and personally don't buy into popularity, if you love a name go for it.

My daughter's (6yo) best friend is Sophie and I think there's one other in their year at school so it isn't over used here.

I've worked with children for 17 years and only ever met 3.

Twickerhun · 19/10/2018 19:38

I agree that it’s dull.

MumGoneCrazy · 19/10/2018 19:44

Classic and beautiful, it's why I named DD2 Sophie, she's 12 and loves her name, only knows one other Sophie

TheDowagerCuntess · 19/10/2018 19:48

I much rather have my Sophie and my other lads which are timeless common names rather than something out there and unknown

There is a vast ocean of middle ground between 'top ten' and 'out there and unknown'.

LunaLovegoodsRadishes · 19/10/2018 19:50

My dd Sophie has a best friend called Sophia! They are in Year 7 at school tho.

yikesanotherbooboo · 19/10/2018 20:04

The reason it is popular is because it is lovely.
I'm not seeing many little Sophies but there are lots of young adults with the name which may be why it feels a bit ubiquitous; also Sophie the giraffe/ Sophie's snail etc.

freddy16 · 20/03/2020 22:53

Sophie is perhaps the most feminine name I can think of, is beautiful sounding and to say, and is classic. I also really like the abbreviation Soph, which lifts this name into my top five, if not too three.

Zombie thread alert

Why, oh why do people bump old threads in this topic?

Bezalelle · 21/03/2020 10:34

Ten a penny

freddy16 · 21/03/2020 11:17

Because it is beautiful ☺️

s3tut0y3r · 21/03/2020 18:17

Surely it depends on the surname. If it is something short like Smith, I think it makes more sense to have a longer first name. If your surname is more long or unusual, Sophie works fine. It is a lovely name

Pinkypink · 21/03/2020 19:04

I love it. Popular for a reason.

freddy16 · 21/03/2020 23:18

I agree completely that the second name can influence whether a first name works or not. As a stand alone though, Sophie really does it for me and exudes femininity possibly more than any other name. I quite like Sophie Smith too, it has a good flow and really softens the name Smith.

Whatsyourflava · 22/03/2020 10:37

I adore it. One of my favourites

But...
