Junior - as a stand alone name for a boy? What does everyone think?

skintbutok · 12/10/2018 11:09

Awful. Sorry.

RiverTam · 12/10/2018 11:10

don't like it. it'll be almost dismissive when they're a grown man.

vanitythynameisnotwoman · 12/10/2018 11:12

Don't like it - can you imagine a 6ft rugby playing 21 yr old? Or even just the teasing at school as he gets older. I get that it's a common nickname in a regional sense but not as a name.

NonaGrey · 12/10/2018 11:13

What would be your first impression of a 40 yo man called Junior?

If he was your lawyer, your kids’ Headteacher, your community policeman?

Does it lend a feeling of maturity, intelligence, strength or authority?

Or did you just think it would be cute on a baby?

You aren’t naming a baby, you are naming a 16 yo, a 35yo, a 70yo.

WerewolfNumber1 · 12/10/2018 11:19

Sorry, I think it’s terrible.

It’s a nickname, not a name, and will sound increasingly ridiculous as he gets older.

It’s like naming him “Babykins”.

mimibunz · 12/10/2018 11:20

Awful.

wildewillow · 12/10/2018 11:32

No. It's not a name.

Onatreebyariver · 12/10/2018 11:34

Picture your child’s teacher being called Junior. Or your doctor being called Junior. Or your husband. Your grandpa.

It’s just insane.

17caterpillars1mouse · 12/10/2018 11:38

A few girls I went to school with named there some this year's ago. They all had their son's aged 15-17

Oysterbabe · 12/10/2018 12:19

I've never thought of it as a stand alone name. Isn't it normally what you call a child as a nickname when you have given him the same name as his father?

DC18 · 12/10/2018 12:31

I don't like it as a stand alone name. As PP have said I can't see a professional man being taken very seriously named junior.
Give him his Dad or grandad's name then he can be junior as a boy or amongst family as well as have an adult name x

juneau · 12/10/2018 12:41

Rule no. 1 of baby-naming - disregard anything that Katie Price has used - unless it's Harvey - which is an actual, proper name.

As for 'Junior', it's not a name, its an adjective meaning young. In the USA, where calling someone Junior is quite common, it's because that person has the same name as his father, so the father will be Fred and the child will be Fred, known as 'junior' to stop confusion between the two people called Fred in the same house.

Name him after his father, by all means, and call him Junior at home to differentiate, but please don't call him Junior as his name. He will grow up to be a adult man one day and he will curse you for lumbering him with such a lame moniker.

wizzywig · 12/10/2018 12:41

Arnold schwarznegger film

SumAndSubstance · 12/10/2018 13:36

It’s common enough in America I think. I always assumed it was a misunderstanding of boys/men who were named after their fathers and nicknamed ‘Junior’ within the family. That also seems more common in America.

Peachbubble · 12/10/2018 13:55

Don't like it at all.

overagain · 12/10/2018 14:31

Awful. It's not a name.

ThunderInMyHeart · 12/10/2018 14:35

I'm with wizzywig

LucyMorningStar · 12/10/2018 14:37

It’s like naming him “Babykins”

This.

formerbabe · 12/10/2018 15:39

I like it as a child's name but can't imagine someone middle aged called Junior... doesn't sound right.

Aquamarine1029 · 12/10/2018 16:17

It's dreadful and very weak.

Sungura · 12/10/2018 16:31

Nope, not Junior. Bad choice, very regrettable if you do it.

Itchytights · 12/10/2018 19:43

Shocking. Don't like it at all.

Knew of a junior who had a younger brother called junior junior.

Won't say the sisters name as v outing but that was equally ridiculous.

overagain · 12/10/2018 21:51

Poor OP it's rare you get such a negative consensus on here!

Polkasq · 12/10/2018 23:09

How about Julian?

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 13/10/2018 13:19

Give over.
