Help! Can you give her an English name?

Hi! I’m looking for an English name for one of my friend’s daughter. I’ll write down a description of her below, and if any names pop into your mind then feel free to tell me! :)

She’s Asian, very pale with black hair and black eyes. Extremely pretty with a small, elfin face shape. Looks a bit cold, but she’s a friendly type of person once you get to know her, and she's not the gossipy sort (just likes to mind her own business).
Overall she has a very elegant and calm demeanor, and we agreed that her name should probably be longer than one syllable. I think she looks like an “Olivia”, and some people say that she looks like an “Iris”, but we’re looking for a name that’ll suit her better.

If you guys have any recommendations, please let us know! We'd really appreciate it

It is actually wise to check with people who are native speakers of the language you are picking a name from. I've seen some clangers:

Orange
Fatgay
Neejam

In the Cypriot dialect Sheila sounds like dog

Lydia
Hannah
Katie

I sort of get this - I know someone who I have always known by their english name but they have a different name from Singapore as well. She uses both , interchangeably.

Jaysus£ colonialism is alive and well. Why not her ‘real’ name? My goddaughter is Nigerian and I can say her name easily- my daughter’s name is Irish ( fadas and all) and is easily pronounced here in UK

BasiliskStare · 12/10/2018 01:18

If "B" I like Bella or Beth - simple to pronounce and spell , but attractive ( IMHO)

FlyingMonkeys · 12/10/2018 01:29

I know someone who selected similar to 'Barry' as an Anglicised name, ended up with 'Bavvy' as they mistook the pronunciation vs spelling. OP has obviously been asked to add to the selection process no need for folk to get all affronted. If the girl selected 'Chlamydia' because she thought it sounded pretty it'd be awful to not point out why it's not a great choice.

From the description I like; Pearl, Eve, Grace, Fiona, Rachel. Hope she finds something she loves.

I live in China and just about everyone I know has an English name. A word of warning though : my students try and find a name like their Chinese name so Liu becomes Leo, or Zhou becomes Joe, unfortunately because the Chinese say their family name first the poor kid ends up being Leo Liu or Joe Zhou.

US baby name lists by year.
Looking around 2005/4/3 Brianna seems to be the most common name starting with B. Brooke was also there.
I'd suggest one if those if she wants a name that fits with her peer group.

Shampooeeee · 12/10/2018 06:40

Priscilla (like the wonderful Priscilla Ahn)
Penelope
Eleanor

I can’t think of any B names that fit your description.

Mammysin
go and find the long post I wrote about why many Koreans do not actually like westerners to use their Korean names.
This is a cultural thing - FROM THE KOREAN SIDE, not from the western side.

By the way, Cherry woulnd't make anyone in UK bat an eyelid I don't think, which makes me think you really need to check US sites as well as this one. (and that works the other way round, Randy, common in US, is not a name you'd want to use in UK)

Rebecca36 · 12/10/2018 10:05

Beth
Beatrice
Barbara is a pretty name, a bit old fashioned but nice.
Bonnie

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/10/2018 10:18

Briar.

TheWiseWomansFear · 12/10/2018 10:55

@steppemum Cherry would make me bat an eyelid, it's a prostitutes name

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 12/10/2018 11:27

Emily
Jessica
Lisa
Miranda

Er, no it’s not. I’ve known several, and they were all lovely, sensible, ordinary ladies.

DreamsofJacaranda · 12/10/2018 14:46

Blythe
Belinda
Beth

HappyGoDucky · 12/10/2018 15:05

First thought was Amanda.

If I was to go with a name starting with B, I'd go for Beatrice. Or Bonnie!

AlliKaneErikson · 13/10/2018 00:38

Beth, Chrlotte, Lara, Millie, Jessica, Alana, Annelise, Emma

theconstantinoplegardener · 13/10/2018 11:06

I think Alaska would suit her.

RDecember · 13/10/2018 22:12

Yay! Thank you guys so much! I just sent her all of the names and she's in the choosing process right now (and also looking into the meaning of the names :D)
I'll let you guys know which name she chose to go with when it's decided! Thank you!!
