Eferhild - have you ever heard of it?

My dh LOVES the name Eferhild for a girl. Apparently it’s a very old English name but I can find very little about it online and we don’t even know for sure how it’s pronounced!
He’s going with how it looks eg Eff er hild (as in hill with a d on the end).
Would be really interested to hear whether anyone’s ever heard of it or knows anything about it? And your thoughts on it as a name?

I imagine it is more like Ever-hilt.

I have a friend with a similar-ish old English name. She's probably the only one but it works well for her.

I like it.

FogCutter · 02/10/2018 09:47

Have never heard of it. Sounds a bit Germanic?

Sorry but I don't like it, sounds harsh to me. And I think she'd spend her whole life having to explain what her name is and how to spell it.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 02/10/2018 09:48

I've never heard of it. Sorry I think it looks awful written down. I wouldn't OP. She might get Hefferhild.

TwitterQueen1 · 02/10/2018 09:49

Efer = heifer = cow.

I would not saddle my child with a name like this. sorry!

skeete · 02/10/2018 09:51

Sorry but I think it's terrible! There's thousands of names out there to choose from, but this is a bit strange and overall not nice sounding Confused

LauderSyme · 02/10/2018 09:53

I've never heard of it but I think it's lovely too. Anglo Saxon names seem to be enjoying a revival but it's still very unique. I think I'd prefer the sound of it pronounced Ee-fer-hild though, the Eff at the start immediately evoked Heffalump for me!

TaurielTest · 02/10/2018 10:02

The HILD element means battle - it crops up in lots of names of Germanic origin (Mat(h)ilda, Hildegard, etc.) - there are lots of them here if you want to look around for alternatives to the EFER part: www.nordicnames.de/wiki/HILD

KlutzyDraconequus · 02/10/2018 10:06

Looks like a Game Of Thrones name or a name from a video game set in medieval fantasy.

Does he like Elder Scrolls by my chance?

Peachbubble · 02/10/2018 10:49

Sounds like Heifer-hild, which I would not want to call a baby girl, or anyone actually.
How about Aoife or Evangeline instead?

AtticaRose · 02/10/2018 11:19

I've found it with the spelling Eoferhild:

www.behindthename.com/name/eoforhild

Apparently the Latinised version, an obscure saint's name, is Everild, which I think is GORGEOUS. (I am surprising myself how much I love it!)

Everild. It's amazing.

"Benedictine abbess and disciple of St. Wilfrid of York, England, sometimes called Averil. She was a noblewoman of Wessex who received the veil from St. Wilfrid. He also gave her a place called "the Bishop's Farm", where she became abbess of a large community. Her companions were Sts. Bega and Wulfreda."

Your poor child will have a lifetime of repeating the name, spelling it, and correcting people's pronunciation.
And it's not even a nice name.

LeeMiller · 02/10/2018 11:53

Honestly, it's rather harsh sounding and looking. Efer is too close to heifer and effing. There are less clunky-soinding alternatives ending in hild or hilda.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 02/10/2018 12:00

How can he love the name when he doesn't even know how it's pronouncedConfused.

n0ne · 02/10/2018 12:07

I really like it but I love old names, and Germanic ones in particular. I was pushing for the middle name Brunhild for DD2 - you can imagine how that went down in MN! I've never heard of Eferhild but it doesn't seem that odd to me.

PinkAvocado · 02/10/2018 12:10

How about Ealswith or Elfwin?

Rebellia · 02/10/2018 13:11

Everild? Seriously?

I just hear Ever-ill which isn't exactly something anyone would want their child to be...

ReginaPhalange89 · 02/10/2018 13:26

If I'm being honest ..... it looks like you've accidently leaned on your phone and that's what it typed. Like when you take your phone out your pocket and it's typed in some random jibberish lol. Sorry

Sophronia · 02/10/2018 13:54

Everild is nicer

Sophronia · 02/10/2018 14:01

Or Everilda

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2018 14:03

If you can’t say it then you can’t use it. Confused

Shadow1234 · 02/10/2018 14:22

I first thought of heifer - cow. Dont think it has a nice flow about it,
Looks and sounds ugly! Sorry.

AtticaRose · 02/10/2018 14:22

@Rebellia

Seriously! I know someone with the last name Everill, which I always thought had a lovely sound. And someone called Averill (first name).

But then,as a pp said, I quite like Matilde and Clothilde and similar names, so this fits in with those.

PinkAvocado · 02/10/2018 14:47

If you can’t say it then you can’t use it

Actually this is a good rule!

Wolfiefan · 02/10/2018 14:57

Ditto for spelling Pink! Grin
