Opinions on the name Blair for a girl? I've heard the comment that it sounds like a retching noise 'bleurgh' which kind of put me off!!!

Tony Blair.

Plus I always thought it was a boys name, not one I particularly like.

Rebellia · 28/09/2018 15:12

It's very American - one of their surnames turned into girls' names.

I don't think these work well in the UK - and Blair especially doesn't because we had a prime Minister by that name only just over a decade ago.

My first thought on hearing the name is Tony Blair, and it's not exactly a neutral/positive connotation.

boux · 28/09/2018 15:13

Gossip girl!

TuathaDeDanann · 28/09/2018 15:13

I like it but I'd put an e on the end of it I think. Less Tony and more obviously a girl's name.

ChanklyBore · 28/09/2018 15:14

How about Blaise?

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 28/09/2018 15:14

I know one who spells it Blaire. She’s around 30 so pre-dates gossip girl and yes is American. I don’t think I’d use it in the U.K. because of Tony...

TheColonelAdoresPuffins · 28/09/2018 15:14

It also makes me think of a blaring noise

MarthaArthur · 28/09/2018 15:16

I know a little boy called Blair. Is a nice enough name.

BigusBumus · 28/09/2018 15:19

I don't think its very nice. A bit too try hard. Plus its an American boys name isn't it?

Goingonandonandon · 28/09/2018 15:20

Blaise is nicer but it's a boy's name I think.
TBH I think Blair is horrid.

owabno · 28/09/2018 15:26

3 Blair's in DD's class. She is 8. They are all boys.

I quite like it for a girl, but you need to be prepared for everyone assuming boy.

owabno · 28/09/2018 15:27

Plus its an American boys name isn't it?

Scottish. It Is Scottish.

CherryBlossom23 · 28/09/2018 15:28

It's not American, it's a Scottish surname that has morphed into a first name, just like Campbell and Fraser. I like it OP. Didn't even think of Tony Blair but I didnt grow up in the UK, for context.

BigusBumus · 28/09/2018 15:43

Oh! Sorry! Of course its Scottish. Blush

elizabetter · 28/09/2018 16:30

I think of Gossip Girl so I want to like it but it just sounds like bleugh to me

CherryValance · 28/09/2018 16:34

Witch project

OliviaStabler · 28/09/2018 16:36

Not in the UK. People will think Tony.

Eleanor90 · 28/09/2018 17:27

Sorry, to me it’s bleurgh plus Tony. Not good associations.

How about Greer/Grier?

Rebellia · 28/09/2018 17:33

The name itself may originate in Scotland, but as a girl's name it's American.

A bit like Mackenzie/Mckenna - they both originated as surnames in Scotland, but it was America that started using them as girls' names.

AgentCooper · 28/09/2018 17:35

Post-Gossip Girl I can accept it as a girl's name, and I'm Scottish Wink

SilverySurfer · 28/09/2018 17:53

Why would you want to name your child after a war criminal?

Agustarella · 28/09/2018 18:00

Witch/war criminal. It doesn't sound as vomity as Fleur though.

weebarra · 28/09/2018 18:06

I'm Scottish and know quite a few, only one girl though, it really suits her.

MarthaArthur · 28/09/2018 18:08

The little boy i know is scottish

Mossend · 28/09/2018 18:13

Very common in Scotland but as a boys name.
If you like it I'd maybe add an e at the end to stop people automatically assuming it's a boys name
