Hi,

We're expecting DC3 in Jan and names are proving a challenge. DH teaches at an all girls school so just associates so many of the names I love with particular children he teaches.

We don't want anything too "out there", something that will work in a variety of contexts when DD is older. Other than that, no "colour" names like Ruby or Violet (they don't work with our surname, which is the name of an animal!).

Shortlist in no particular order:

Iris
Nina
Cassia (Cassie for short, not a fan of Cassandra though)
Anya
Carla (maybe Carly for short)

What do you think?

Cassia. Just beautiful.

Enko · 23/09/2018 18:11

I like all of them

Cassia and Anya are my favourite

Nina is cute and every Nina I have met have been lovely

Iris and Carla for me are ok I wouldn't think yuck or anything but nor do they excite me.

BellMcEnd · 23/09/2018 18:15

Anya. Fabulous name

starzig · 23/09/2018 18:15

I like them all but not getting the 'for shorts'. They are the same length!!!

AliceRR · 23/09/2018 18:15

I really like Iris and Cassia

Can’t decide about Anya 🤔

I don’t see the point of shortening Carla to Carly as they’re the same length and same number of syllables and Carla is nice IMO

You know it is quite normal for a 'short' name/diminutive, or pet name version of a name to be the same length as the original name or even longer. For instance Annie is normally the pet form of Anne, Rosie for Rose, Tommy could be for Thomas, Johnny for John, Molly for Mary, Katie or Kitty or Cathy for Katherine/Catherine, Susie for Susan, etc. etc.

Sometimes it's not so much about the shortening but just making a less formal version of the name for friends and family to use. Often these 'short' versions end in an 'ee' sound with y/ie/i spelling, which seems to be cuter somehow and more suited to children. Eg Annie sounds more 'cute' than Anne.

Nina

Azure83 · 24/09/2018 13:18

I love Nina and like Anya

starkid · 24/09/2018 17:09

I love Anya! How are you pronouncing it? I also like Cassia, have seen it pronounced as both CASS-ee-ah and CASH-ah.

Movablefeast · 24/09/2018 17:13

Antonia?

Itsear · 24/09/2018 20:05

Like them all apart from Carla. Really like the nicknames Cassie (Cassia) & Annie (Anya).

Icklepup · 24/09/2018 20:08

I like Cassia

Jemimapuddleduk · 24/09/2018 20:14

Definitely Iris or Anya. Both are beautiful names and I used one of them for my dd- she’s the only one in the school with that name.

SoftBlocks · 24/09/2018 20:19

Nina, Anya (Anja is nice too) or Cassia.
