Welsh girls names

DH is half Welsh. We live in England and are unlikely to ever live i Wales, we may visit on holiday though (no family living there).

DHs DGM passed away last year, she had a very Welsh name, but hated it but was very proud of her Welsh heritage and other Welsh names so we would like to honour that.

I'm not keen on Ffion or Carys/ Cerys but do like Seren though realise it is very popular in Wales (never met one myself). Anwen and Tanwen are out though due to family names.

Any suggestions?

There are many to chose from. I like Ffion but Carys/Cerys seem dated as they were popular in the 1960s.
Seren is a new name and will date badly IMO.
I would avoid a welsh name personally as many don't sound very nice when said by non-welsh speakers, maybe use a welsh name as a middle name.
Some Welsh girls could work - all are phonetic (if you speak welsh) but some are almost unpronounceable.
Ones that might work include:
Non (rhymes with on), Nia (Nee-ah, it's the welsh form of Niamh), Beth, Ann, Mali, Mabli, Cadi, Bronwen, Gaenor, Ceri (Kerry) ...

I really like Mabli @MikeUniformMike should it be pronounced May-blee or with the Ma sound as in man?

Gwen, Mari, Siân, Sioned, Siwan (Shew-an), Catrin, Betsi ...

Watto1 · 21/09/2018 19:34

Angharad, Sian, Betsan, Ceri, Cerian, Rhiannon, Rhian, Delyth. I'll keep thinking!

Tortycat · 21/09/2018 19:35

i know a little girl called menna - think that's lovely

MikeUniformMike · 21/09/2018 19:35

Mab to rhyme with fab.
Like Madly.
It's popular in wales and so cute.

winterinmadeira · 21/09/2018 19:38

Nia, Sian, Mari are all nice and easy to say.

TwllBach · 21/09/2018 19:39

Just to hijack the thread a bit... I see @MikeUniformMike on lots of welsh threads and love seeing them post, especially as someone born and bred in Essex but who moved up to north wales at 18.

My contributions -

Gwenno
Heledd
Swyn
Gwennan (I think? Although I may have made that up)

I’ve no idea whether any of those are dated though, I just like them!

RedPencil · 21/09/2018 19:40

Angharad

GVmama · 21/09/2018 19:40

I love the name Seren Smile

cactusplant · 21/09/2018 19:41

I like Cerys and Megan

MikeUniformMike · 21/09/2018 19:42

Menna is nice. Wenna is too. Delyth is nice but it was very popular in the 1960s so a bit dated.
Eleri (el-erry) is nice but will get said as Ellory.
Lowri is nice but will get said as Lowry.

MikeUniformMike · 21/09/2018 19:45

Gwenno is cute, Heledd is lovely (Hel-eth the th like in the or that not as in thing)
Gwenan (GWEN-nan) is dated.

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/09/2018 19:46

Rhian

Caryl Ann
My great aunt was Sarah Ann , known as Sairann ,all one word !

Glumglowworm · 21/09/2018 19:52

Mabli is lovely

I also love Nia and Carys

I had Alwen on my list

DickensianHysteric · 21/09/2018 19:58

Celyn (which means holly) is one of my favourites. I also love Heulwen (sunshine) but that would be harder for people to pronounce (hoyl-wen).

AngkorWaat · 21/09/2018 19:59

Bethan, Mali, Alys?

MikeUniformMike · 21/09/2018 20:00

Missed that TwllBach. Thanks. I grew up in N.Wales.
Sarah Ann said as Sairann (Seran) is cute. Sara is welsh for Sarah and is nice.
Swyn is unusual but not easy to say.

Twolittlebears · 21/09/2018 20:01

Arianwen?

MikeUniformMike · 21/09/2018 20:03

Hoylwen- NO!
I love Mallt, Lleucu, Llio Leusa, Alaw, Fflur Elliw etc but they will not travel.

Wandastartup · 21/09/2018 20:04

I like Nia, Non, Eirlys( snowdrop) and Cerys

DickensianHysteric · 21/09/2018 20:06

Is that not how you say it, Mike or do you just not like the name? Is it dated?

katiegd · 21/09/2018 20:08

Elin/Elen are nice and easily pronounceable outside Wales I think.

@DickensianHysteric Heulwen is pronounced hail-wen (as in hailstones) not holy-wen
