Welsh girls names

DH is half Welsh. We live in England and are unlikely to ever live i Wales, we may visit on holiday though (no family living there).

DHs DGM passed away last year, she had a very Welsh name, but hated it but was very proud of her Welsh heritage and other Welsh names so we would like to honour that.

I'm not keen on Ffion or Carys/ Cerys but do like Seren though realise it is very popular in Wales (never met one myself). Anwen and Tanwen are out though due to family names.

Any suggestions?

Doh not hoyl-wen ...stupid autocorrect!

bridgetreilly · 21/09/2018 20:12

Sioned.

gallicgirl · 21/09/2018 20:12

We've got an Alys. It's only a problem when everyone wants to spell it Alice but I don't mind too much and it really suits DD.

MonaChopsis · 21/09/2018 20:13

I don't think Alys has been mentioned yet...

DrowsyDragon · 21/09/2018 20:14

We have an Alys too. I wanted a welsh name but DH wanted something easy for his family/ ‘not too welsh’. Took ages to agree. And now we are thinking about baby two and might have the whole argument again.

MonaChopsis · 21/09/2018 20:15

Lol at the cross post.

I also know a few small Tesni's and Beca's, both of which travel well.

TittyGolightly · 21/09/2018 20:15

We go around this every couple of days. OP, if you search you’ll find tons of threads with lots of arguments for and against different names —and arguments about pronunciation— Confused

Brandnewstart · 21/09/2018 20:17

I love Mabli and it was on my list for my new baby girl. Cerys/ Carys isn’t dated where I live (South Wales) but they are both quite popular.

cazinge · 21/09/2018 20:21

Alys was top of our list for a girl (we had a DS). Tesni or Teleri were 2nd choices I think Tesni might be ok in England but I was worried about Teleri becoming Tellory.

Hedgehogblues · 21/09/2018 20:26

Rhian, Sian, Megan, Cerrianne, Enfys, Gwen, Mair,

FredMerc · 21/09/2018 20:30

Gwendoline

overagain · 21/09/2018 21:17

Lots to consider! Definitely want something easy to pronounce in English as that's most likely where we'll be and DH has very few Welsh relatives still living.

What about Sian

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 21/09/2018 22:16

I'm not Welsh or living in Wales, so I have no idea about popularity or how dated these might be. But the following were all on my girl's name list:
Gwendolyn/ Gwen
Meredith
Morgan
Eira

sakura06 · 21/09/2018 22:26

Nia and Catrin are probably easiest for English speakers. Megan will get the English pronunciation 'Meg-un' rather than 'Meg-Ann', but is lovely. Ceri is easy once you know how to say it, but lots of people will say Seri, Siri, Cherry and Cherie for that!

Picknickers · 21/09/2018 22:30

I have a baby Carys. Pleased it's a 60s throwback 😂

louiscatpaws · 23/09/2018 02:08

Love Cerys/Carys (think it depends on whether it's north or south Wales), and Deryn or Meiriad (?spelling)

MikeUniformMike · 23/09/2018 13:47

Carys, Siân, Bethan, Rhian, Nia, Eleri and Delyth were very popular for welsh girls born in the 1960s. If you like a name then it doesn't matter if it seems dated to someone you don't know who went to school with many with the name.
I've never heard of a Meiriad.

MonaChopsis · 23/09/2018 14:36

louiscatpaws do you mean Mererid?! Or Mared? Both names used locally (although Mererid is less common, and harder for non-Welsh to pronouce)

bridgetreilly · 23/09/2018 15:07

Oh, yes to Mererid.

Barker26 · 23/09/2018 15:37

How about Tegan? Of Welsh origin and means "loved one" or "darling. It's my first choice and isn't obviously Welsh but the meaning is there and easy to say and spell for living in England.

LittleMissYorkshireLass · 23/09/2018 15:45

I like

Cariad or Cari as a short version
Carys
Cadi
Seren
Catrin

I live in Wales but am English and can spell and pronounce all these Grin

TittyGolightly · 23/09/2018 15:49

Caridad isn’t a name.

TittyGolightly · 23/09/2018 15:49

Cariad, even.

TittyGolightly · 23/09/2018 15:50

It’s like calling someone “girlfriend”.
