Margot or Margaux

Always thought that Margaux was a yoonique spelling and that it was a guilty pleasure of mine. But someone on another friend has pointed out that it is actually more popular as a name in France. I’m not too sure which one I prefer- I prefer Margot in how it is more classic but the pronounciation in other countries (like Germany) worries me a bit

Personally I like Margaux, but then it's one of the most expensive French wines, so I can't often afford it.

NotANotMan · 17/09/2018 20:39

I don't think Margaux is common in France really is it? It looks really clunky. Margot is lovely.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 17/09/2018 20:39

Margot. Margaux has been used for the name but it’s really not the proper spelling.

MidnightVelvetthe7th · 17/09/2018 20:40

Not everyone would know how to pronounce Margaux though, she'd keep getting called Marggawks to rhyme with hawks

Margot for me Smile

Leland · 17/09/2018 20:41

Margot. Margaux as a first name is awful.

PinguDance · 17/09/2018 20:53

I think Margaux is a pretty great way of trolling your child and everyone who ever tries to spell their name. I’d probably go for it but I like to think of names as character building exercises.

Florries · 17/09/2018 20:54

Kids are cruel. She'd be margawks.

Viviolet · 17/09/2018 20:56

Okay I think Margot is the one staying in my top two then!

Margot really is a gorgeous name though, OP.

Lulette · 17/09/2018 21:11

Sorry I think Margaux is pretentious and ridiculous. Definitely prefer Margot!

Dubz227 · 17/09/2018 21:17

Am I the only one that thinks that Margot sounds like an exotic way of saying Maggot?? Or is the T silent?

Theworldisfullofgs · 17/09/2018 21:18

Margot.
And yes the t is silent.

Sunflower321 · 17/09/2018 22:26

No, only in French is the t silent.

In Germany, Scandinavia, Austria etc it is pronounced Mar-gott.

Sunflower321 · 17/09/2018 22:34

If you want the Margo pronunciation and you're outside of France, I'd spell it Margo.

LassWiADelicateAir · 17/09/2018 22:39

Margaux is the name of a wine producing region. It is not a girl's name.

Margaux Hemingway was named Margot but changed her screen name to Margaux because she was told she was named after the wine.

It is as awful as Chardonnay.

Sleepykate · 18/09/2018 03:32

I love both names! I have a lovely french friend who spells is like "Margaux" although I'd probably spell it "Margot". Actually I don't know. I prefer the spelling of Margaux but I'm a coward and I'd be worried people would crititise it (I read Margaux Hemingway was named this as she was conceived after her parents had drank too much of the wine by the same name! So is be worried that people might think I'd named her that for the same reason! Haha).

TatianaLarina · 18/09/2018 07:29

No, only in French is the t silent.

And in English.

Sunflower321 · 18/09/2018 07:43

Because it's a French name, otherwise the t would be pronounced. Like Forgot.

TatianaLarina · 18/09/2018 07:51

No shit.

Enidblyton1 · 18/09/2018 07:56

I know a French Margaux, but I agree with others that I’d stick with Margot in the UK

I know several little Margots in the U.K. and absolutely nobody pronounces the t.
Yes, if Margot travels to certain European countries the default pronunciation would be Mar-gott. But you could say that with many names - Florence for example.
Margot is a great name Smile

Sunflower321 · 18/09/2018 08:14

Is Margaux really the more popular spelling in France?

AdventuringThroughLife · 18/09/2018 08:16

I initially misread for maggot... im not sure Id want that for a child.

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 18/09/2018 08:47

Unusually for a French spelling I think Margaux is uglier to look at written down. If that even makes sense. Some words look pretty to my eyes.

Just me?

Anyway. Another vote for Margot

SemperIdem · 18/09/2018 08:53

Margot.

Margaux is as a pp says, just as bad as naming your baby Chardonnay.

Viviolet · 18/09/2018 16:23

Although I’m pretty sure I’ll be going with Margot, it’s not really the same as naming your child Chardonnay as that has no other meanings apart from the drink- whereas Margaux is recognised as a name
