Margot or Margaux

Always thought that Margaux was a yoonique spelling and that it was a guilty pleasure of mine. But someone on another friend has pointed out that it is actually more popular as a name in France. I’m not too sure which one I prefer- I prefer Margot in how it is more classic but the pronounciation in other countries (like Germany) worries me a bit

Apparently (from a quick google) both spellings are in the top 50 girls names in France, with Margaux being slightly more popular.

Sunflower321 · 18/09/2018 17:51

I'd definitely use Margaux in that case, as it avoids any Mar-gott pronunciations.

MsHopey · 18/09/2018 19:02

What's the other name in your top 2 OP? God I'm nosey.

NataliaOsipova · 18/09/2018 19:04

Margaux is the name of a wine producing region. It is not a girl's name.

Yes, yes - completely agree. It looks ridiculous. Margot is a lovely name!

Sunflower321 · 18/09/2018 20:42

Margaux is a girls name, more popular than Margot in France!

Florries · 18/09/2018 20:44

Margot Robbie is from Australia and she pronounces her name with a silent t

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 18/09/2018 20:49

Nobody in the UK pronounces Margot with a t! Unless their first language isn't English or they're too young to have watched The Good Life...

Viviolet · 18/09/2018 22:34

mshopey haha I would’ve asked the same thing. It’s Juno- I must like girls names ending in o

Out of interest I've just scrolled through my French friends Facebook friends list as I've never heard of the name spelled Margaux, only Margot. Was really surprised to find she had 5 'Margaux's' and only one 'Margot' as friends! I do think Margot looks better in English though x

PoisonousSmurf · 19/09/2018 20:47

But then bullies could call the child 'Maggot'.

SemperIdem · 19/09/2018 23:00

Margot Robbie has said that “maggot” was her childhood nickname in interviews.

PinkAvocado · 20/09/2018 01:33

Juno is far nicer! I can’t say Margot without sounding like I’m putting on a false posh accent.

LydiaLunch7 · 20/09/2018 02:12

[Almost] everyone knows the t is silent (we use the French pronunciation in England). And the name is becoming more and more popular so people will be hearing it more now too. I would not expect many people at all to mispronounce it here.

Marcipex · 20/09/2018 02:21

Margo is lovely, doesn't look like maggot, and solves the pronunciation issue if she moves to Scandinavia.

LittleMouseontheDairy · 20/09/2018 07:58

I work with a very hip —and slightly scary— French girl called Margaux (fun fact). I prefer Margot I think though.
I really liked Juno for a bit but sadly I can’t get over it sounding a little like ‘d’you know’ and the thought of saying ‘Juno, no!’ When baby is a toddler and feeling like I’m saying ‘no’ lots!! Terrible reasons I know... I do think it’s lovely.

Sunflower321 · 20/09/2018 14:15

I would spell it either Margo (in UK) or Margaux (in France).

Sunflower321 · 20/09/2018 14:21

Or Margot (pronounced MAR-got) in Germany

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 20/09/2018 15:47

Keep Margaux in the wine cellar. Much prefer Margot. Margo will probably be misspelt as Margot anyway. It’s hardly an obscure name (Margot Robbie, Margo from despicable me...) so I seriously doubt it will be mispronounced in the UK. I used to work with a Margot and no one ever got it wrong.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 20/09/2018 17:29

Sunflower, you really dislike the Margot spelling, don't you? I think it's much the nicer spelling for the UK and unlikely to be mispronounced by anyone with any intelligence more than once.

MargauxL · 27/06/2022 13:10

Well Margaux is a really common name in France (I'm french and my name is Margaux) please don't judge a name which doesn't come from your country, it can hurts people. Thanks

Margot looks like maggot to me. I'm afraid I'm not fond of the name however it's spelt, but I'd choose Margo out of the options.

OLD THREAD ALERT, WHOOPS!

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 27/06/2022 13:32

people really go searching for long dead threads on their own name in order to chastise any naysayers? Grin
