Opinions on the name Rafferty please?

Hey, I would be grateful for opinions on the name Rafferty for a boy, please. My husband and I are having a massive difference of opinion on this one - I think it's 'cool' but he thinks it's 'posh' and we cannot see where the other is coming from at all! Any thoughts on who is right?

Thank you!

I personally don't like surnames for first names but it's not a common name, it's totally your choice!

LadyDuplo · 13/09/2018 22:44

I knew a huge shire horse called Rafferty. It suited him.

To me, now, it's an animal name.

ReginaPhalange89 · 13/09/2018 22:47

Definitely don't think it's posh. It's ok. But it's a surname to me

DramaAlpaca · 13/09/2018 22:50

It's a long way from posh. It's just a perfectly ordinary Irish surname. I think it's a bit try-hard for a first name.

bella1426 · 13/09/2018 22:52

I like it and think it sounds both cool and posh. Probably because I associate it with Jude Law and Sadie Frosts kid

SmokyRobinson · 13/09/2018 22:54

I love the name Raff and would only ever call him by the shortened version. I also love Quinn. I now wish I had twin boys so I could use those names

JungWan · 13/09/2018 22:54

I quite like it even though it's a sur name.

Not mad about that generally but there are exceptions. Bellamy for a girl, Rafferty for a boy.

Fozzleyplum · 13/09/2018 22:56

It's a bit too "Mini Boden catalogue circa 2005" for my taste.

Firelegs · 13/09/2018 22:56

It’s very.... -chavy- ‘Modern’

Grumpasaurus · 13/09/2018 23:00

It's a bit to trendy try hard for me. Would fit in where we live, full of yummy hipster mummies being all vegan like...

butlerswharf · 13/09/2018 23:00

My first and only thought is it's a bit try-hard. But if you love it then use it.

PussInSandals · 14/09/2018 00:07

Chavvy? Hmm I've never in my life met a chavvy Rafferty! I think it sounds both cool and posh; great choice!

blue25 · 14/09/2018 00:13

Not posh-it's a very common Irish surname. I don't think it will age well TBH

RockinHippy · 14/09/2018 00:18

It's a little bit of both, more unusual & cool than posh these days, but historically posh.

I can't say I love it, but it's unusual & not offensive. I've never met one under 50. The one I knew was a camp as Christmas Aboriginal, with a thick Yorkshire accent, who went by Raff. He was lovely & definitely very cool.

Firelegs · 14/09/2018 04:37

I have definitley met a chavy Rafferty...

It’s a celeb baby name after all

Izzygrey · 14/09/2018 05:58

I love it! I think it's cool AND quite posh - but nothing wrong with that! Also, I hate the way people say "try-hard". It sounds so spiteful and bitter.

Charley50 · 14/09/2018 06:08

It's a no from me.

Charley50 · 14/09/2018 06:09

How about Harley?

MartyMcFly1984 · 14/09/2018 06:18

I may be wrong, but isn’t rafferty the guy off rocky horror?

MadMaryBoddington · 14/09/2018 07:21

Dated sleb kid name.

Roomba · 14/09/2018 07:30

Sorry, just makes me instantly think of Jude Law's talentless 'model' son.

I personally don't like it but mainly because I don't like names your can shorten. The nickname Raffa doesn't scream cool and 100% not posh too me!

But my grandma called my sister Zahra when I was 9 & I absolutely hated in now I think it's the most beautiful name & she doesn't half suit it so what do I know! :)
Congratulations on your baby xx

PamsterWheel · 14/09/2018 09:02

I like what it gets shortened to: Raff.
