Is Aslan too commonly associated with Narnia? My DH loves it but I feel like I'll always think about the lion 😂

Definitely Aslan/Jesus.

HopeGarden · 13/09/2018 20:45

Narnia.

Violetparis · 13/09/2018 20:47

I know an Aslam.

Fightthebear · 13/09/2018 20:48

It's a fairly common male name in Georgia. I also know a few aslans but they're all Georgian. I don't think it works so well in a UK context due to the narnia association.

mrsprefect · 13/09/2018 20:54

I know an Aslan - female though. I thought it was a bit weird the first time I met her but you do get used to it!

JellySlice · 13/09/2018 20:55

Sure it's Narnia, but so what? I know children named after TV vampires, characters in superhero films, colours, places, foods. Yes, maybe at first adults might be a bit puzzled, but people soon get used to a name. TBF Aslan is a perfectly nice name.

TheFluffyHippo · 14/09/2018 01:00

I taught an Aslan. He was Turkish and VERY proud of his name- must have told me about once a week that it meant lion in Turkish. Nobody thought anything of it really, but then we were in a very diverse area.

If I heard it today, I’d think of that kid before Narnia, but I realise I’ll be in the minority

SD1978 · 14/09/2018 07:13

Makes me think of Australian sign language Known as Auslan.

TheApprentice · 14/09/2018 07:17

My sons pal is called Aslan. His family are from Pakistan so I just presumed the name came from there. I did think of Narnia at first but now it's just his name!!

AuntieStella · 14/09/2018 07:21

If you are from one of the communities in which this is a common name, then go for it.

If not, then I wouldn't because of the Narnia chronicles. Not just because he's a lion, but because he's the allegory of Jesus. Which is also a name that I'd advise against unless you are part of a community where it is is general use.

Buy a cat. Name it aslan. Give your baby a human name.

Roomba · 14/09/2018 07:29

I've met a couple of Aslans (they may not have spelled it this way but that's how it was pronounced). I believe they were both Turkish. I thought it was a reasonably common name amongst some communities? I like it!

RiverTam · 14/09/2018 07:45

Seriously, I never think of any of this stuff when I’m talking to or thinking about the Aslan I know. It’s just his name.

KnotsInMay · 14/09/2018 07:51

“Hahahah yes he’ll be synonymous with a lion for his entire life!”

Unless you use the Arslan spelling.

And then he will be synonymous with arses for his entire life.

WerewolfNumber1 · 14/09/2018 07:53

I know two Aslans, I think one has a Turkish father and one possibly has Eastern European parents. It’s a common name in some communities.

Obviously I know the narnia connection but it hasn’t mattered really.

Having said that I wouldn’t use it if you have no connection to the relevant cultures, I don’t think it’s a name that has crossed over to mainstream.

IdontknowwhyIcallhimGerald · 14/09/2018 07:54

I know an Aslan whose siblings are Hosanna and Jubilee. Definite evangelical Christian associations for me!

BertrandRussell · 14/09/2018 07:55

When you say "you get used to it quickly"- of course you do. But the person called Aslan had to deal with everyone he meets for the rest of his life having to "get used to his name". Call him Peter.

AfterSchoolWorry · 14/09/2018 07:58

All I can think of is the shit band. Don't do it.

whymewhyme · 14/09/2018 07:58

I love it but I didn't choose it because of narnia!

Game0fScones · 14/09/2018 08:00

Afterschool 😮 they are a totally brilliant band!

Dollius01 · 14/09/2018 08:02

Aslan is actually Turkish for lion

RiverTam · 14/09/2018 08:14

Bertrand If you take that view then you would never name your child anything from, for example, your own culture if you’re not British. Which would be very daft, would it not. People get used to unusual names all the time, it takes about a nanosecond. There are lots of Nigerian families at our school and we have a Princess and a Queen in school. Normal names for Nigerian families, and again, none of the kids bat an eyelid and the parents blink for a second and then move on. But would you say that their parents shouldn’t have used these names?

The Aslan I know is from NZ, a land more accepting of different names.

FishCanFly · 14/09/2018 13:28

Narnia aside, it sounds Muslim
