What sort of girl is Georgiana?

Rather than Georgia or Georgina. Sounds very vintage/antique to me and i really like the name.

And i have been playing close attention to Colin Firth’s pronounciation and am very sure that in P&P he refers to “Geor-jee-aanah Darcy”, in contrast to the the Whig pronounciation of “George-aina”, in the Keira K film about the Duchess of Devonshire.

Georgiana would be my daughter if not for DH's dislike for the name! You're spot on re: P&P.
Beautiful name!

Posh ;-)

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 08/09/2018 22:38

Don’t forget the mean cousin from Jane Eyre. I still quite like it as a name though!

yellowspottedwellies · 08/09/2018 22:40

A outrageous landlady who stole our money.

Probably not a universal fact lol

PawneeParksDept · 08/09/2018 22:44

DEAR GEORGIANA OH HOW I LONG TO SEE HER, IS SHE MUCH CHANGED SINCE THE SPRING?!

I love this name it would be on my list and I would pronounce it as Georgiana Darcy and not Georgiana Cavendish

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2018 22:45

One who gets mightily peed off at being called Georgina/Jorjayna/Jorjy-anna instead of Georgie-Ah-nah?

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2018 22:47

I'd say it as George-Aina FWIW. She probably looks like a young Emilia Fox.

Shadow1234 · 08/09/2018 22:51

Nice name, but will always get shortened to Georgie or Gina. (If not
by you, then almost certainly by their friends), so if u are happy
With that, then go with your gut feeling.

SemperIdem · 08/09/2018 23:01

George-aina was an affected pronunciation (as was much of the speech pattern of that particular social set) and not how the Duchess in question pronounced her name prior to her marriage. It is also fairly unpleasant to the ear.

I would pronounce it George-ee-ahna. I like it but it does seem a bit...much for day to day life. Pretty though.

Booop · 08/09/2018 23:04

Georgiana would often participate in a gymkhana.

Scabetty · 08/09/2018 23:05

Posh, outdoorsy and sporty, handsome rather than pretty. All in my imagination. Like the name Smile

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2018 23:06

But if Georgie-ahna is too much, why are names like Penelope, Felicity, Ariana, Isabella etc so popular on here?

Snog · 08/09/2018 23:06

A duchess

Lavenderhues · 08/09/2018 23:07

Petite, middle class, precocious, pretty

I adore the name btw

greendale17 · 08/09/2018 23:10

I thought it sounds s bit chavvy

Beamur · 08/09/2018 23:14

One of my bestest friends name. You couldn't meet a kinder, more generous person.

llangennith · 08/09/2018 23:15

A friend called her DD1 Georgiana and pronounced it George-ahner.
Turned out she put the first 'a' in by mistake!

dinosaurkisses · 08/09/2018 23:16

@PawneeParksDept GrinGrinGrin

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2018 23:18

George-ahner sounds nice.

bridgetreilly · 08/09/2018 23:19

Georgiana is nice but dim. Has a pony, laughs a bit too loudly and marries well.

twattymctwatterson · 08/09/2018 23:19

She's very accomplished and plays and sings all day long

SemperIdem · 08/09/2018 23:22

I imagine because Georgina serves very well as a polysyllabic name.

In the same way Alexandria seems a bit much but Alexandra does not.

To me anyway.

tissuesosoft · 08/09/2018 23:23

She’s the HCP who saw me through major surgery- hand hold, tissue bearer, firm hand, caring and went beyond every day I saw her post op. Beautiful name!

MikeUniformMike · 08/09/2018 23:29

I think Georgina is a bit long but I like George. Georgie and Gina as possible nns (I know 3, one of each). Georgiana just seems to go that little bit too far.
Alexandra is nice but Alexandria is a place and Alexandrina is too long.

SemperIdem · 08/09/2018 23:38

My daughters middle name is polysyllabic, known in Greek mythology, Shakespeare and Harry Potter. No natural, pleasant nickname. I noticed when it was the front runner as first name that people seemed to shut off at the third syllable. I’ve grown to view all with more than three as “too much” as a result. However lovely they sound, in my mind they’re middle names.
