Spanish names DD

DH is Spanish and we'd like to use a Spanish name for our daughter.
Anyone have any ideas?
I'm open to lots of ideas but we like very traditional names and religious names like Pilar and Esperanza.
Thanks!

I love Marisol, apparently it’s a nickname for the Virgin Mary.

Mariposa means butterfly NO Spanish girls/women are called Mariposa.

golondrina · 08/09/2018 20:13

We're hoping to move to Spain in a year or two Golondrina!
I like Soledad and I also like Dolores but I'm a bit worried that they're too negative because of their meanings

Dolores is very old lady in Spain (my 86 year old MIL is a Dolores) and will be shortened to Loli.

golondrina · 08/09/2018 20:21

I think Sole is nice and doesn't have particularly negative connotations, despite the meaning (I think of it as solitude rather than loneliness, like peace) There's another one, Paz although I'm not keen.

user1457017537 · 08/09/2018 20:23

Pilar, Paloma or Pia

golondrina · 08/09/2018 20:23

Inés. Inesa is Basque I think. So, it also depends a bit where you live and how much you want to fit in. Names are much more traditional in Andalucía for instance.

Gigibefreed · 08/09/2018 20:27

Oh thanks for the heads up!

What's the view of Pilar? Is that an 'old lady' name?

Also, do you know how popular religious names are in Spain among the younger generation? Names like Pilar and Inma? Are they seen as an outdated thing?

I also love Belén but I'm not sure how my English family would feel about that one!!

Thanks so much for your help!

I love Iyana.

Gigibefreed · 08/09/2018 20:32

We are considering living in Aragón, Andalucía or Navarra if that helps

I can only speak for Andalucía and names like Pilar are very common even for little girls. Lots and lots of little girls are named after their mums/grandmothers so you get the same names over and over. Inma is very popular. Sofía is big at the minute.
Alicia is quite popular.
Names that are popular in Latin America are becoming more common, like Valentina, Carolina, etc.
