Spanish names DD

Gigibefreed · 08/09/2018 18:48

DH is Spanish and we'd like to use a Spanish name for our daughter.
Anyone have any ideas?
I'm open to lots of ideas but we like very traditional names and religious names like Pilar and Esperanza.
Thanks!

Leire is popular in Navarra, and one one of the lists Nuria appears, there are quite a few Nurias in Andalucía.

What does your DH like, as a Spaniard?

Gigibefreed · 08/09/2018 20:59

DH likes Jimena, Sara, Delfina, Abril, Mariangel and Maite. So quite a variety.

I quite like Delfina and Mariangel but not as much as he does!

he wants me to compile a list of what I like and he'll cross off what he doesn't like until we're left with one! Which isn't great because although I speak a bit of Spanish, I have very little clue about names!

I've never ever heard of a Delfina and very few Abrils. There are a fair few Mari Angeles in Andalucía and I think Jimena too, although not in my bit of Andalucía particularly.

PetraRabbit · 08/09/2018 21:02

Paulina (pronounced the Spanish way); Ines; Carmen; Natalia; Rocío; Carolina; Natalia.

golondrina · 08/09/2018 21:02

Sara is popular here, and Ana too (similar sort of sound). Marina, Mireia too if you like Maite. Marta is big here too.

golondrina · 08/09/2018 21:04

Paula (powla) is popular too, Paulina isn't really used in Andalucía though, don't know about elsewhere.

Gigibefreed · 08/09/2018 21:05

Oh I love Marta! But it seems so popular at the moment Sad

Marian Marisol Mariposa are lovely I was going to suggest them myself as these are names I love 😍

golondrina · 08/09/2018 21:36

I really really don't think Mariposa is used as a name in Spain. I might be wrong, but I've been here twenty years and I really really don't think it's used as a name.

Gigibefreed · 08/09/2018 21:38

I like Mariposa but I could no sooner name my child that than Butterfly. It'd be nice for non-Spanish speakers

OP posts:
golondrina · 08/09/2018 21:43

Well, quite. It would be exactly like calling your English child Butterfly in England.

elQuintoConyo · 08/09/2018 22:17

Mariposa Grin too funny!

I'm in Catalunya so a different are, but most of those are very old-ladyish here: Inma, Esperanza, Rocio.

Tons of Nurias - i know about 8, aged 4-50ish and love every one of them, they're all fabulous.

I love Basque names: Edurne, Izaskun. Edurne means snow, which in turn is Nieves in Spanish or Neus in Catalan, both used as name, too.

WoolyMama · 08/09/2018 22:17

Not sure if it's used in Spain but I knew a really lovely Mexican Blanca and I've always loved the name since.

elQuintoConyo · 08/09/2018 22:18

Oh, and a Catalan friend named her son Sauc: Elderberry! So there are a few arty, unusual names arround, too.

Gigibefreed · 08/09/2018 22:37

WoolyMama Blanca!!!! How did I forget Blanca???!! I love it!! Thank you for reminding me of this name 😂😂

I once met an Azahara which I think means “orange blossom”

No idea if it’s popular now!

golondrina · 09/09/2018 13:49

Azahar (pronounced Azaaar) means orange blossom but I've never heard it used as a name. I've also never heard Mariangel, here it's always Mariangeles. And I think the name is Maria de los Angeles, with Mariangeles being the shortened form.

golondrina · 09/09/2018 13:54

DH says azahara exists but isn't common

elQuintoConyo · 09/09/2018 22:31

If DS had been a girl he would have been called Maribel. That was the only girl's name on our list! It was more difficult for boys.
