In the UK? Jacob is by far the more usual spelling. Jakub will be correcting people his whole life.

MongerTruffle · 08/09/2018 08:27

Jakub, but only because I'm foreign.

GandalfsWrinklyHat · 08/09/2018 08:29

Depends on your heritage surely. But Jacob is so much easier.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 08/09/2018 08:31

Jacob,

stellabird · 08/09/2018 08:31

Poor Jakub would be spelling his name forever. And it has a clunky look about it. "Jacob" looks right to me.

TheLandsWhereTheJumbliesLive · 08/09/2018 08:31

The baby's heritage will be English and Polish, hence the decision between the English and Polish versions of the name. Jakub is surely an easy Polish name for people to deal with compared to, say, Przemyslaw!

but the names Jacob/Jakub are said quite differently....
I like the Polish shortening for it, Kuba.

This ^^

GingerCatBigBalls · 08/09/2018 08:44

How would you pronounce Jakub? Would it bother you if it was mispronounced?

I think either is fine - you might have to correct people occasionally but if it's important to you that he has this connection with his herritage then go for it.

GingerCatBigBalls · 08/09/2018 08:45

Heritage

grasspigeons · 08/09/2018 08:45

Are they said the same? If so I don't think it matters. How often do you say you nsme for people to spell now. It's mainly online forms. Teachers see the name written before they meet the child.

Sisgal · 08/09/2018 08:46

Jakub ?? No way

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 08/09/2018 08:46

Jakub = 'Yakoob'

applesauce1 · 08/09/2018 08:50

Like what @FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast said. Jacob is pronounced with a hard J and Jakub has a Y sound. The Jakub I know is pronounced Yakoob.
So it depends which pronunciation you prefer.

Starlight345 · 08/09/2018 08:51

Jacob. For the reasons it will be constantly misspelt.

I do actually know a Jacob . Mum is Polish, dad British.

AsteroidAsterix · 08/09/2018 08:51

OP I prefer Jakub.

Sorry to derail slightly but does anyone know the Latvian pronunciation of Jekabs?

StormcloakNord · 08/09/2018 09:14

I'm from the UK and I also prefer Jakub. I work with a Jakub. Everyone calls him Kuba.

I think it's a nice nod to his Polish heritage.

Tanaqui · 08/09/2018 09:18

I like both but would pronounce Jacob jay-cb and Jakub ya-cb. So I would choose based on how you say it.

blinkineckmum · 08/09/2018 09:25

Jakub. Honour the polish, be a bit different, and it's lovely.

Freyanna · 08/09/2018 09:26

Jacob

Yakubs

TatianaLarina · 08/09/2018 10:35

I like both.

LoveAGoodChat · 08/09/2018 10:54

Jacob, mainly because the other one will sentence your child to a lifetime of correcting people and having to spell out their name for people/employers/banks etc

Katinkak8 · 08/09/2018 13:18

I teach a Jakub (ya-cb) and I don't think anyone has struggled too much with pronunciation. They may need correcting a couple of times but it isn't a difficult name to remember. I think it's really nice and honours the Polish heritage.
Saying that, Jacob is lovely too, so you can't really go wrong, OP! Smile

Jacob
