I think Jacob (Jay-cub) sounds far nicer than Jakub (Ya-cub or Ja-cub)

coragreta · 08/09/2018 13:46

I would pronounce them differently. Yakub vs jaycub. Choose the spelling which matches how you pronounce it.

mostdays · 08/09/2018 13:47

Jakub and call him Kuba!
My three sons have Polish names that work for English people. Mm wisdom is that we are bad parents who have condemned our dc to a life of explaining their name and the spelling of it to people. To us, recognising their dual heritage was more important than denying one half of it so as to fit in with middle England as much as possible.

AsteroidAsterix · 08/09/2018 14:29

Thanks tatiana . My grandad always used a nickname and I hated not knowing for sure.

ConkerTriumphant · 08/09/2018 14:35

Off topic OP but I’d LOVE to know how to pronounce Przemyslaw.

I work with a child with this name but he’s always known by a nickname.

But it's very useful if, as an adult with a partly foreign but white background, you have to deal with xenophobic people, and they don't know your heritage unless you tell them, because they wouldn't have a clue from your name. (Hopefully you won't have to know them well enough to tell them middle names!)

LusaCole · 08/09/2018 15:12

Agree with the people saying that whichever you choose should have the pronunciation to match.

Calling him Jakub but pronounced like the English Jacob would be the worst of both worlds.

BigBlueBubble · 08/09/2018 15:18

I’ve never heard of Jakub. I’d assume it was a yooneek name that the parents had made up and it would colour my perception. He’ll be correcting people his entire life.

Jenniferturkington · 08/09/2018 15:27

Depends on pronunciation. Jakub would be ya-kub. I actually prefer the Polish . Kuba is a great shortening. Also, Polish names will be pretty common place for this generation so they shouldn’t have too much trouble spelling them out.

Sunflower321 · 08/09/2018 16:40

I prefer Jakub (Ya-kub) given your polish heritage. Will your son spend time in Poland?

MaisyPops · 08/09/2018 16:44

I'd go Jakub and pronounce it as ya-cub.

I think calling him jay-cub and having the polish spelling would be the worst of both worlds.

Your ignorance and false assumptions are your own problem.

TatianaLarina · 08/09/2018 16:54

Przemyslaw = Shemislav (roughly)

rainingcatsanddog · 08/09/2018 16:57

Depends how you pronounce his name imo

60sname · 08/09/2018 17:02

Your ignorance and false assumptions are your own problem. Grin

Every time there is a thread from a foreign op naming DC living in the UK there are stupid people who can't fathom that other languages have similar names but with different spellings.

LucyFox · 08/09/2018 17:21

With Polish heritage I would chose Jakub pronounced the Polish way

DramaAlpaca · 08/09/2018 17:43

I'd choose Jakub to honour his Polish heritage & use the diminutive Kuba.

Nutellawithporridge · 08/09/2018 17:58

Jacob for me. Topic reminds me of that funny Michael McIntyre video about names. I'll see if I can find the link.

Nutellawithporridge · 08/09/2018 17:59

This

ConkerTriumphant · 08/09/2018 19:26

TatianaLarina thank you!

moredoll · 08/09/2018 19:34

Jacob if he's going to be going to school here.
Jakub if he's going to school in Poland.

TheLandsWhereTheJumbliesLive · 08/09/2018 19:54

He will be going to school in UK, but there is always a possibility we relocate to Poland at some point. I'm very inclined to go with Jakub, pronounced Yakub, nickname Kuba Smile

I'm actually English and my DH is Polish. I've managed to pronounce Polish names with no trouble. I'm aware some people will think it's a 'yoonique' spelling, but it's not, so that's pretty irrelevant to me actually.

The point some have made regarding always having his name misspelt is something to consider, but my name is forever being misspelt, and really, it's a minor irritation and I like my name.

I once worked with the most lovely little boy called Jakub; please choose this! It's nice to honour his Polish heritage, and it's hardly difficult for English people to pronounce, even if they've never heard it before.

Rebecca36 · 08/09/2018 20:28

Jacob if you are in the UK.

moredoll · 08/09/2018 20:32

If you're going to be pronouncing it in the Polish manner then spell it that way.
Jacob sounds nicer to me though
Jakub makes me think of Yakult.
