Thinking about names

I just realised I really like the name Blaise. There’s an older guy at my work with that name and I never thought anything of it but just saw it on a name list and I actually really like it but apparently it means lisp or stutter... Does that matter??

I’m sure DH will say he doesn’t like it anyway...

I also like (for boy or girl) River, Rory, Summer (girl obvs)...

I like a lot of traditional names too, especially for girls, like Amelia, Aurora, Isabella, Sophie but feel like there are all a bit too popular at the moment.

I love Alice but have a niece named that:

Also like Clementine and Dahlia but DH doesn’t.

Welcome any name ideas!

@pixieloux @AliceRR ooh I love both those combinations! That way we both get the names we love!

@AliceRR I actually love Aurora James for a girl, yes slightly unusual (which I'm a fan of) but not so out there it's ridiculous if you know what I mean.

AliceRR · 06/09/2018 11:14

@TheMagicTorch Thanks. I do like it.

DH has two sons and one of them has middle name James so not sure if that would be weird but don’t think it is as he is obviously a boy, I would do it if a girl.

It was actually my cousin who gave me he idea of James for a girl (as a first name though) and then she said “oh no wait that’s your H’s name!” 😂

Now thinking of finding out sex at 20w scan as it will give us longer to think of names and obviously I’m curious too!

I also really love Aurora James for a girl! ❤️

TatianaLarina · 06/09/2018 12:59

I like it. Blaise is a male name in France but in the U.K. it sounds more like a girl’s name. (And a horse’s name too tbf).

Shadow1234 · 08/09/2018 17:16

Lonnie
Harvey
Kaden
Shay
Klay
Rhett
Jedd
Bryn
Miller
Hunter
Parker
Cooper
Ashton
Aston
Ashley
Brody
River
Tre (pronounced tray)
Dre (pronounced dray)

AliceRR · 08/09/2018 19:47

I like a few of those - Brody, Shay, Bryn (for a girl), Aston, Kade... Thank you 😊

OP posts:
SelinaMyers · 08/09/2018 19:59

Lonne, Tre and Dre are all awful.

TatianaLarina · 09/09/2018 00:01

Brody and Bryn are ok but Shay, Aston and Kade are white trash.

AliceRR · 09/09/2018 09:19

I’ve never heard Aston and Kaden (not Kade, although I wrote Kade!) before so couldn’t make a judgment. And the only Shay I can think of is Shay Mitchell!

They sound quite American to me though

I still really liked Blaise and Aurora / Rory! Or would it be Rorie for a girl? 🤔

Sarahandduck18 · 09/09/2018 09:25

I love Aurora.

Someone put me off by saying it’s a Disney princess but surely most people don’t know/ think that?

AliceRR · 09/09/2018 09:29

@Sarahandduck18 I think it is the name of sleeping beauty(?) or something but I didn’t know that til recently so a lot of people wouldn’t know and I’m not sure that it’s only a Disney name / created by Disney 🤔

OP posts:
pixieloux · 09/09/2018 09:36

@AliceRR It wasn’t created by Disney... It’s actually an old name, that was using way back in the 1800s, despite it’s sudden popularity making it feel very modern. Aurora is the goddess of Dawn and has links to the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) It’s a name in it’s own right outside of Disney but you will get a lot of “like the Disney princess?” Maybe not so much now that it’s getting more popular but we certainly have in the past! It’s slightly annoying but doesn’t taken anything away from her name... We named her Aurora because we love the name in it’s own right and knowing we’d get the Disney association so I can’t complain lol. It is something to think about when considering though, if the association is going to bother you.

pixieloux · 09/09/2018 09:42

I love the suggestions Winter and Primrose for you. We had them on our list but they don’t really fit with our other children’s names so I’m sad about loosing them and they fit your style well. The first poster gave some great suggestions all round!

AliceRR · 27/09/2018 13:45

UPDATe

We have now found out we are having a girl 💕

So we can focus on girl’s names which is what I had more of anyway!

I was quite on to Aurora James but DH thanks there are a lot of Auroras (apparently he has heard of two recently) and also I’m already not sure she feels like an Aurora!

I’m quite liking Sophie! Or Sophia?

I call her Fi or Fe at the moment (short for fetus) so Sophie kind of fits with that!

I suppose maybe I will keep moving from one name to the other for a bit until baby is here and we have to pick a name!

Willow or Wren??

iris89 · 27/09/2018 16:11

I think Sophie/Sophia is far more overused than Aurora Blush

pixieloux · 27/09/2018 16:27

Sophia is #11 in the UK charts, Sophie is #16 and Aurora has jumped to #80. There were 665 Auroras born last year but 2,129 Sophies and 2,398 Sophias. Might be worth taking a look on here...

Obviously Aurora is my favourite. Not keen on James on a girl personally though. In all honesty it feels very trendy at the moment and like it will date but it’s a middle name and hardly used so eh. I like Sophia a lot too.

AliceRR · 27/09/2018 16:42

My DH’s first name is James which is why I wanted to use it

You are probably right about Sophie g Aurora. I suppose Sophie is more of a classic though whereas Aurora seems to be of the moment? I haven’t decided against Aurora. I do like it a lot and think “Rory” or “Rorie”(?) would be so cute!

OP posts:
pixieloux · 27/09/2018 17:23

@AliceRR I think the Rory NN is what makes me not like James as a middle name all the more... It makes the name completely male. It’s not my child to name though so go with what you love! She might like it... My Aurora prefers not to be called Rory too so I guess that sways my opinion slightly as well.

Aurora does seem to be gaining popularity in the UK... I guess it feels very ‘as of now’ because of that. It has been used as long as Sophie, just not as much so I guess I don’t see much of a difference. I’ve always liked that it’s not overly popular but not too ‘out there’ and ‘unusual’... It fit my bill after all the names I felt I couldn’t use after working in childcare lol.

Sophie/Sophia are beautiful and classic - I like them all and don’t think you can really go wrong.

AliceRR · 27/09/2018 19:19

I just don’t want a “trendy” name but also can’t imaging calling her “Aurora”. Part of the reason I like it is to shorten it to Rory but I don’t just want to call her Rory...

I don’t mind the name sounding a bit male

I still like it

Let’s see

🤔

OP posts:
pixieloux · 27/09/2018 19:33

Maybe you’ve just not found the name you love yet? I felt the same until finding Aurora with DD1... I didn’t want to 100% commit to anything until hearing it.

Lorelei isn’t overly popular and gives you Rory... Just throwing it out as a suggestion :)

AliceRR · 27/09/2018 19:47

Well initially I thought Aurora and then Aurora James was the one. Nothing else compared and it was the two together that I loved as well.

Now I’m not sure but I have time to think about it to see if there is something I like better.

I don’t really like Lorelai and I don’t really see how it would shorten to Rory if not for the Gilmore Girls!

OP posts:
iris89 · 27/09/2018 20:08

I love Rory on it's own for a girl, and loves James as a middle name too!

AliceRR · 28/09/2018 12:05

DH loves the name Ruby

I’m not sure
