Thinking about names

I just realised I really like the name Blaise. There’s an older guy at my work with that name and I never thought anything of it but just saw it on a name list and I actually really like it but apparently it means lisp or stutter... Does that matter??

I’m sure DH will say he doesn’t like it anyway...

I also like (for boy or girl) River, Rory, Summer (girl obvs)...

I like a lot of traditional names too, especially for girls, like Amelia, Aurora, Isabella, Sophie but feel like there are all a bit too popular at the moment.

I love Alice but have a niece named that:

Also like Clementine and Dahlia but DH doesn’t.

Welcome any name ideas!

Blaise is not really my style but a very old saint’s name so I don’t really see the meaning as an issue.

I think of Blaise as a girl's name.

Athene (Aah thee nay, Greek goddess of wisdom)

I like Blaise for a girl too but had only ever encountered it with this guy at work...

Atlas is different, haven’t heard that before.

I like Archer and Camille.

I like Jude and Athene is of the sort I like 🤔

Not sure of pronunciation tbh, but ds watches Blaze and the monster machines on telly!!

AliceRR · 03/09/2018 10:23

I’ve never met an Aurora either but I feel like I’ve heard it mentioned a lot and DH mentioned the name to a colleague and her niece or something had just been called that so feel it is maybe getting more popular.

Saffron is a good one.

I like Heath and Orlando. Skye is already on my list.

Marissa and Jasper maybe 🤔

I do like Alistair (or other spelling variations)

🙂

@Aprilshowersinaugust yes would be pronounced “blaze” 🤔🙄🤣

I liked Chase but saw the light after Paw Patrol!

TheMagicTorch · 03/09/2018 11:20

I love Aurora but DP isn't keen.
@moredoll Athene (Aah thee nay) I have never heard of that - it is beautiful!

YolandaTheYeti · 03/09/2018 13:29

I used to know a female Blaise. She was Australian and said it was quite a popular name where she was from. I have no idea if that’s true!

Aquamarine1029 · 04/09/2018 02:04

I love the name Blaise! For a girl or boy.

moredoll · 04/09/2018 02:23

TheMagicTorch

It's lovely, isn't it? Clashes badly with our surname unfortunately otherwise would have been a front runner for DD.

florascotia2 · 04/09/2018 13:02

Traditionally, St Blaise was portrayed as an older man, always with a very large bushy beard.
Some very trad images here: www.catholic.org/saints/saint.php?saint_id=28

I think it's a great name for a boy (legends about Blaise show him as kindly, and a healer, as well the patron saint of wool-workers) but it would not be my choice for a girl. Each to their own, of course ...

AliceRR · 04/09/2018 13:12

Thank you. I do like the name. It’s defnitely on my list, for boy or girl, but so are others!

pixieloux · 05/09/2018 15:28

I have an Aurora - never met another one and have had lots of comments on how you don't hear it often (and compliments on how beautiful it is too) She's 6 and a half. You get to use the NN Rory too which is also on your list. I agree that Amelia, Isabella and Sophie are popular but are still beautiful names.

Love Clementine - My DH vetoed it too!

AliceRR · 05/09/2018 16:30

@pixieloux It is a lovely name and I was definitely thinking Aurora but shortening to Rory. DH isn’t keen but I may be able to persuade him (if we have a girl!)

I might check the name records to see where it ranks for girls names in 2016 , 2017... to see how popular it is now!

OP posts:
AliceRR · 05/09/2018 16:33

Having said that, our surname begins with R so DH thought Rory R_ has a bit of a ring to it!

OP posts:
pixieloux · 05/09/2018 16:38

@AliceRR I'm not sure where it ranks in the UK... It's #241 here, in Ireland, at the moment... It was about 450 places behind that when we named her though lol.

AliceRR · 05/09/2018 17:28

@poxielou yes I imagine it’s getting more popular!

OP posts:
TheMagicTorch · 06/09/2018 09:19

@pixieloux I love Aurora and I'm sort of stuck on it if we have a girl!
DP wants Grace, which I do love but it's just getting so popular now!

helvetica01 · 06/09/2018 09:49

Blaise is a boy's name, as in Blaise Pascal! I think it's lovely.

pixieloux · 06/09/2018 11:01

@TheMagicTorch That's how I felt when we first heard it/started to consider it... It sort of blew all our then top contenders out of the water lol.

Aurora Grace or Grace Aurora sounds lovely, FWIW WinkGrin

AliceRR · 06/09/2018 11:02

I am thinking Aurora James (DH first name) which is maybe a bit unorthodox but I like it

OP posts:
AliceRR · 06/09/2018 11:03

Aurora Grace is lovely too!

OP posts:
pixieloux · 06/09/2018 11:09

Ours would have been either Aurora Willow or Aurora Niamh, as they were are top 3 names for her, but she has an honour name instead (the Irish form of my grandmother's name so it honours both sides of the family)
