Thinking about names

I just realised I really like the name Blaise. There’s an older guy at my work with that name and I never thought anything of it but just saw it on a name list and I actually really like it but apparently it means lisp or stutter... Does that matter??

I’m sure DH will say he doesn’t like it anyway...

I also like (for boy or girl) River, Rory, Summer (girl obvs)...

I like a lot of traditional names too, especially for girls, like Amelia, Aurora, Isabella, Sophie but feel like there are all a bit too popular at the moment.

Blaise is not really my style but a very old saint’s name so I don’t really see the meaning as an issue.

I wouldn't say Aurora is mega-popular - it's a lovely name but I've never met one.

I’ve never met an Aurora either but I feel like I’ve heard it mentioned a lot and DH mentioned the name to a colleague and her niece or something had just been called that so feel it is maybe getting more popular.

Saffron is a good one.

I like Heath and Orlando. Skye is already on my list.

I used to know a female Blaise. She was Australian and said it was quite a popular name where she was from. I have no idea if that’s true!

It's lovely, isn't it? Clashes badly with our surname unfortunately otherwise would have been a front runner for DD.

Traditionally, St Blaise was portrayed as an older man, always with a very large bushy beard.

I think it's a great name for a boy (legends about Blaise show him as kindly, and a healer, as well the patron saint of wool-workers) but it would not be my choice for a girl. Each to their own, of course ...

I have an Aurora - never met another one and have had lots of comments on how you don't hear it often (and compliments on how beautiful it is too) She's 6 and a half. You get to use the NN Rory too which is also on your list. I agree that Amelia, Isabella and Sophie are popular but are still beautiful names.

Love Clementine - My DH vetoed it too!

@pixieloux It is a lovely name and I was definitely thinking Aurora but shortening to Rory. DH isn’t keen but I may be able to persuade him (if we have a girl!)

I might check the name records to see where it ranks for girls names in 2016 , 2017... to see how popular it is now!

Having said that, our surname begins with R so DH thought Rory R_ has a bit of a ring to it!

@AliceRR I'm not sure where it ranks in the UK... It's #241 here, in Ireland, at the moment... It was about 450 places behind that when we named her though lol.

Blaise is a boy's name, as in Blaise Pascal! I think it's lovely.

@TheMagicTorch That's how I felt when we first heard it/started to consider it... It sort of blew all our then top contenders out of the water lol.

Aurora Grace or Grace Aurora sounds lovely, FWIW

I am thinking Aurora James (DH first name) which is maybe a bit unorthodox but I like it

Ours would have been either Aurora Willow or Aurora Niamh, as they were are top 3 names for her, but she has an honour name instead (the Irish form of my grandmother's name so it honours both sides of the family)
