Boy name - stuck between 2!

Hi,

We are expecting our first child, a little boy in October and we are down to 2 names.

We both work in education so all along have said we want something unique that we dont come across every day.

The 2 names we are down to are:

Ozzie
Oscar

Oscar is the safe option but becoming very common and Ozzie is unique but maybe to wild? The middle name will be Jon.

Would love to hear your thoughts but please be kind! Its taken us ages to narrow it down to these 2.

Thanks Smile

Oscar is ridiculously popular where we are (Midlands). There were 4 in DS's reception class alone!

BikeRunSki · 20/08/2018 22:41

Can Ozzie not be an abbreviation for Oscar?

CocoLoco87 · 20/08/2018 22:43

Love Oscar. I've not heard any young children here (south east) with that name for a long time! Ozzie is a nn for Oscar to me.

Sophronia · 20/08/2018 22:43

I thought Ozzie was a nickname for Oscar?

xoguineas · 20/08/2018 22:45

I would go with Oscar and use Ozzie as a nickname. Best of both worlds!

Jnl90 · 20/08/2018 22:46

Yeah we fell in love with the full name ozzie as its unique and we just like it.

After some comments we then thought about oscar with a nn ozzie but just worry oscar will be very common and working in education this isnt what we want, to see lots of children with our childs name Confused

Oscar is in the top 10 boys names so is very popular.

FlyingMonkeys · 20/08/2018 22:47

Ozzy Osbournes real name is John... So you'd probably get a lot of adults thinking you're a massive fan...

MikeUniformMike · 20/08/2018 22:47

Oscar is popular.
Ozzie is a bit nicknamey so you could call him anything but he'd be known as Ozzie. The famous Ozzy is really John.

ProseccoPoppy · 20/08/2018 22:50

I’d definitely go for Oscar. Ozzie just seems way too nickname-y and not like a “proper” name. Works well as a nickname for Oscar and means that your DS has a more formal name for work (or just if he prefers) when he grows up.

MikeUniformMike · 20/08/2018 22:51

Oscar is Os-cur not Oz-cur, so it would make more sense to use a name with the Oz sound in it.
Oswald (?), Osborne, Osman ... might be better.
Osman is rather nice.

Waterlemon · 20/08/2018 22:55

I think you should just wait till you meet you little man, and see which name suits him best.

I have a friend called Austin whose nn is Aussie” pronounced more like “Ozzie “

MollyHuaCha · 20/08/2018 22:55

Oscar

C0untDucku1a · 20/08/2018 22:58

Oscar is very popular! Youll meet loads!

John / jon on the otherhanf is not. If yu want a unique name, go with Jon!

BigBlueBubble · 20/08/2018 22:58

Ozzie is short for Oscar. It isn’t a full name.

Dani18 · 20/08/2018 23:08

I don't know any Oscars so no idea where all the popularity is coming from. I'm in the West of Scotland though. I think Oscar would be best as it gives him options when he is older x

apresski · 20/08/2018 23:09

Ozzie is not short for Oscar... it's Austin and a brilliant name, love it!

BrutusMcDogface · 20/08/2018 23:11

I know an oscar who is known as ozzy. But really; Ozzie isn't a name in its own right, is it? Or is it?

QOD · 20/08/2018 23:11

Oscar is every 4th boy here. The others being Harry George or Noah
Ozzie is FAB

BrutusMcDogface · 20/08/2018 23:12

Oh I stand corrected! It's a Hebrew name meaning "strong"! Sorry!

BrutusMcDogface · 20/08/2018 23:14

I always thought ozzy Osborne was called ozzy as a diminutive of Osborne, if that makes sense?!

BrutusMcDogface · 20/08/2018 23:15

As a nickname I mean, as I know his real name is Jon.

I really need to go to sleep now......

ohnothanks · 20/08/2018 23:16

Jon is waaaaay nicer than either Oscar or Ozzie. Oscar, well, not too popular around my area now but 5 years ago was a go-to name. Ozzie sounds too modish to me. Jon/ Johnny I really hink is due a comeback as it has a nice mouthfeel about it ;)

Goostacean · 20/08/2018 23:29

It’s a no to Ozzie, from me. Imagine applying for a job as a barrister, or a banker, or... I don’t know... anything?! Hi, I’m Ozzie... no, it’s too casual, sorry.

Oscar is a bit meh to my tastes personally, but it’s a perfectly good name! And you can use Ozzie as the nn, as pp have suggested.

Quangot · 20/08/2018 23:36

I don't like Oscar much, but Ozzie is great! I'd use Oswald, with Ozzie for short.
