Boy name - stuck between 2!

Hi,

We are expecting our first child, a little boy in October and we are down to 2 names.

We both work in education so all along have said we want something unique that we dont come across every day.

The 2 names we are down to are:

Ozzie
Oscar

Oscar is the safe option but becoming very common and Ozzie is unique but maybe to wild? The middle name will be Jon.

Would love to hear your thoughts but please be kind! Its taken us ages to narrow it down to these 2.

Thanks Smile

Agree Ozzie's a nn. I like Oscar.

RavenWings · 21/08/2018 00:57

God no to Ozzie, it's awful. Austin though is lovely as a full name.
Oscar is boring tbqh.

FlyingMonkeys · 21/08/2018 04:10

To be honest anyone over 25 will think 'Ozzy'? (Osbourne), if you work in education you'll surely know it'll get changed to 'Mozzie' at some point, and the older generation will think 'Aussie'? Oscar is okay but I think Owen is nicer if you want an 'O' name.

RichPetunia · 21/08/2018 06:15

It's Oscar from me. Ozzie? I'd think his family were either trying too hard to be different or fans of Ozzy Osbourne.

Joeybee · 21/08/2018 06:20

Not a fan of Ozzie at all, I just think of Ozzie Osbourne and it sounds a bit try-hard,
LOVE Oscar - its just such a fully rounded name which works on a child, teenager and man. I think Oscar is pretty timeless too, and it'd be hard to judge someone based on the name Oscar. I agree though that it is becoming more popular. I don't think it's going to become top 20 though, and definitely won't be the new Oliver!

Ihuntmonsters · 21/08/2018 06:30

Ozzie is very associated with Ozzy Osbourne and sounds very nicknamish. Also pretty close to Aussie. He might get a bit of Ozzie Ozzie Oy Oy Oy shouted at him too. I'd not pick it as a full first name. If you like the sound of Ozzie and want something less popular than Oscar how about Ezra (Ezzie)? Osborne/Osborn would be the most obvious long forms for Ozzie, although you could go for Osbert (I think Albert is currently popular 'bert' name though). If you wanted really unusual there is Ozazias, which sounds kind of cool but is probably too unusual for most Grin

Ihuntmonsters · 21/08/2018 06:40

Oscar looks like it might be post peak, at No 7 in 2013, but it was still No 9 in 2017 and has been top 10 for a while now.

deptfordgirl · 21/08/2018 08:05

I think people would presume Ozzie was a nn for Oscar but as you say Oscar is very common. If it's only between those two I would go for Oscar and just always call him Ozzie.

OneOfEach2 · 21/08/2018 08:09

I far prefer Oscar. Having mooched around the playground, baby/toddler sense scene for the last 2 years I can say I haven't heard of any new Oscars.

I have a friend who has an Austin and they use the nickname Ozzie for him (Aussie) so perhaps that could be an option.

pipilangstrumpf · 21/08/2018 12:03

Oscar may well start to fall out of fashion and sound dated. I'd avoid it.

If you like Ozzie, how about Oswald, Austin or Ozymandias?

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 21/08/2018 12:10

If you are looking for something unusual/unique then neither really fit the bill

Oscar currently very popular and it's likely many of these will adopt the nickname Ozzie in an attempt to stand out from all the other Oscars

If you give your son the name Ozzie he is also likely to spend much of his life explaining he isn't an Oscar (like if I came across a girl called Izzy I would assume she was really an Isobel)

Meebs · 21/08/2018 12:28

I actually like Ozzie in it's own right. So many names were originally nicknames anyway, Colin comes from Nicholas, Jack from John and Barnaby from Barnabas, so I think it's absolutely fine to choose Ozzie. It's also adorable and does it really matter about the Ozzy Osborne association, you like the name!?

BikeRunSki · 21/08/2018 14:15

Just call him Ozymandias.

Jnl90 · 21/08/2018 18:29

Thanks everyone for your replies! I now worry Oscar is very common in current little ones so will come through my work over the next few years. Another few we had on list but not as high was:

Lenny
Sidney
Hugo
Renzo

pipilangstrumpf · 21/08/2018 18:36

Sidney is great!

EmmaC78 · 21/08/2018 18:39

Not keen on Ozzie. Your new list is better. Apart from Renzo they are all nice.

BrutusMcDogface · 21/08/2018 19:10

How about Lorenzo?

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 21/08/2018 19:48

Liking your new list!

Never heard of Renzo but quite like how it sounds

Prefer Hugh to Hugo but love Lenny and Sidney

kenandbarbie · 21/08/2018 20:05

Lenny would prefer Leonard
Sidney very nice and I like Sid too as a nn
Hugo very nice
Renzo don't like unless it's a nn for Lorenzo
Oscar like it
Ozzie I don't like it unless as a nn for something

As you've probably gathered I prefer the full names to nicknames!

C0untDucku1a · 21/08/2018 21:10

Sidney is great. I only know 1 child called sidney. Was my choice for ds but dh got his way.
I like Hugo and again only know one child with that name.
I know 4 Lennys. 3 boys and 1 girl.

Picknickers · 24/08/2018 22:51

Lenny is beyond fab! I personally really detest the name Sidney. Makes me think of kidneys. Yuk!
